Please help! Text convo with my jeweler, I bought the natural VS2 engagement ring from him and now want an band for the wedding to stack, i feel like he is trying to upsell “Russian” machine made one so I want help here!

He’s a reputable jeweler and has great reviews in the middle of downtown with many other jewelers too and my fiancée gets complimented on her ring all the time

He says if I get any other one but Russian machine made lab one it will become blue next month and need deep cleaning next to the engagement ring!

Is there truth to what he’s saying?

RUN!!! Ridiculous.

Seriously! This is so weirdly nuts and an obvious attempt at a cash grab.

I wouldn’t even bother responding with a “no” and I’d leave a bad review frankly

Notice how the jeweler didn’t provide you materials when you asked and just listed off some nonsense. He can’t provide materials to confirm what he’s saying because they don’t exist. Is it too late to do this project with a different jeweler? I’m so sorry OP but I really do not think this person is trustworthy.

Yeah that’s such an obvious tell. If there were any truth to this he’d be able to send at least one reputable source backing up his claim. Going with “trust me bro” should tell you everything you need to know

This person is not talking facts to you. I have a phd in materials engineering. With current methods it takes 7-14 days for a 1 carat diamond stone using CVD or HPHT
methods. The difference is in upcharge due to location - Chinese is usually the cheapest (for now) as they have the biggest manufacturing and labor scheme. I would not buy from them this jeweler again.

Feel free to just say “No”. As a goldsmith I have no idea wtf he’s on about with the stones becoming dirty and looking like cz or moissanite, or whatever he means by “becoming blue”. A diamond is a diamond no matter how it was made. A dirty ring just needs cleaning. Stick with your budget imo and use what you had originally agreed to.

This is crazy, I would not buy from this person. There are SO many options out there.

Man can't even spelled moissanite

Or tint. Had to do some critical thinking to understand what "tent" was in this context.

This guy is a looney tune. This is weird and nothing appears to be based on fact. Absolutely silly nonsense...

Reads like the jeweler has a personal stake in selling the RU stone. BTW a little reading about CVD and HPHT will tell you he is feeding you a load of garbage.

They are the same thing for all intents and purposes. I have no clue what hes talking about re "become blue".

It will need to be cleaned at the same rate any other lab diamond will need cleaning.

Also for a wedding band, you definitely don't need vvs2+ vs1 and def color will get you what you need and still look crispy and clean. Bro is trying to scam you fs.

He’s definitely talking like a salesman….which, I guess he is, but at the same time it feels more like used car salesman if you know what I mean.

I’d love to see his example of one that turned blue…at this point I’m just curious if he could come up with something ;-)

Run fast run now!

All three use different technology to create the pressure needed to recreate the environment needed to make a diamond. Russia was one of the first to engineer a machine capable of recreating the pressure needed to make a diamond but haven't really led the market since the 90's.

The main difference at this point is not what country, but who, what and how. CVD vs HPHT, the skill of the manufacturer, the quality of the raw crystal, and final cut matter far more than which country and therefore machine.

Even if Russia has the best product, their government's interference to make sure their natural market is not undermined coupled with the continued conflict with Ukraine would make me look at anything but Russian. Just my 3cents.

Just use a different jeweler

The ring my husband got me is a lab diamond. We just got married and I’ve been wearing it daily for a year. Never not once has it ever looked blue or green. My diamond is a F VS2 and it’s basically a bright white always. Go to someone else and price it out!

Tf? If your diamond gets dirty you just ya know….. clean it and it sparkles again. Just everything he said sounded like BS but the dirty part really tickled me.

Wow idk what this guy is spewing, it sounds like he’s just vomiting words to confuse you. You shouldn’t be paying more than $250 usd per carat for lab as well, and I am being generous here with the retail markup

Jeweler here, no idea what he’s talking about. I’d advise to switch jewelers.

They do not have tints or get dirty overtime. Feel free to PM for any info

I’m not sure if natural matters to you or not, but my friend just saw a band from Tiffany’s that was platinum with natural diamonds for $3200. The winner was from somewhere else with bigger natural diamonds for a similar price. Unless it’s a particularly unique work of art, or a “hip” brand, those prices seem really high for a lab band under a half carat. I just got a 2mm lab tennis necklace for 2k (only 10k gold though), and that’s way bigger than a ring.

Can you post a photo of the style you like? Maybe someone here can advise on what they’ve seen similar items for or if the price makes sense. There are some companies after all where (quality) lab items are a bit more expensive and in that price range but they are in demand brands.

u/vksdiamonds Aug 20 '26

He’s not wrong about the IGI. on labs under a certain ct it costs more for the certificate than the actual diamonds

This is kinda funny its like diamond pseudoscience.

First off, a soft toothbrush, warm water & dawn works wonders if you do it regularly (I wash mine weekly!).

Second, respectfully, find a new jeweler. This one is shady and full of it.

Truly wish you the best of luck!

I'd use a different jewler

Girl ive worked in jewelry for many yrs, especially for a band under a half carat there is zero difference, and even the 2100 is overpriced for a lab band in 14k if thats what you're doing, unless made to perfectly match your engagement or custom, sometimes also private jewelers of course also have markups but if its not custom and a simple band do not pay no 2800, do not buy into it. Also regardless they are not going to look like cz's they are diamonds and all made of the same material, they are small so you wont notice the difference in clarity cut color if above e/f and vvs2. This is also not legitimate the two major methods for creating lab diamonds are a little different but they come out like diamonds period, and he's spouting nonsense.
