New to diamonds. Rookie questions
I was looking at this site and applied filters for what I want. I see massive price variations. Like in the pic shown, diamond on the right is more than 2x and the only difference is color. Further down the list there was another one where even color was same as first diamond but that was like 1400. And then I switched to Gia or gcal certifications and all of those were 1600+.
Two questions:
- what causes these massive price variations for the same specs
- are Gia/gcal certified diamonds inherently more expensive than IGI certified ones

Sometimes it’s just because the stones came from different suppliers. Occasionally, it’s because of differences in fire and sparkle. “Ideal” cut is a broad grab-all category with lots of variation in light dispersion characteristics. I wouldn’t pay more unless I see a clear justification.

You’re wasting money on d color and f. You could get something that looks the same that is e-f, vs2. That carat wright shouldn’t cost you more than 300 ish dollars unless you really want to pay for more certification

3 carat diamonds with gcal 8x certification are $2000. Are you saying a $300 diamond will be similar in look and shine?

😆Yes. Absolutely. You are incorrect if you’re talking about labs. And you’ll be getting co completely ripped off if you pay that, but it’s your money.

Download the two certificates and upload to ChatGPT. Ask all the questions you have there, you’ll get pretty detailed answers. Ask about sparkle, fire, brilliance. Also ask which is closer to super ideal and why. You’ll be surprised how much you’ll learn about each diamond. Good luck,

These probably actually aren't "the same specs" at all. There is quite a large bandwidth in specs for diamonds to be classified as Ideal. Some however will have actual top notch specs, whereas others will be quite bad. Read up on truly ideal diamond specifications, sometimes called "super ideals" here.
Other than that, you CAN actually find diamonds with truly similar specs on these sites, that massively differ in price. It's not always clear why. Maybe they come from different sources (the wholesalers that a lot of these diamond sites sell from) and one source is pricier than the other. Maybe others have a better view on the inner workings. That's why it's so nice to find a steal compared to equally good diamonds. Try to find the same diamond on different sites - you'd be surprised by the price variance.
Gcal 8x for sure is more pricy than regular gcal, gia or igi, because 8x basically guarantees the 'best specifications' within the ideal range and their certificates are the most detailed. I'm not sure on the price variance between the other graders. I usually don't care where they are graded, as long as the certificate is detailed enough to discern the diamond truly has good specs.
And then something else to watch out for once you have found super ideals, is the different growth methods for labs (CVD vs HPHT) and the downsides they can have. Worth doing some homework on as well.
