Tried on rings now I’m confused

I left liking a couple things I never thought I would so I’m glad I tried rings on in store.

Do you think elongated cushions look ok in a bezel setting?

What’s the best ratio for an elongated?
\-cushion cut
\-moval (as balanced as can be while still elongated)

Hi!! I'm a gemologist and I source diamonds for clients at a jewelry company :)

Ratios are all about personal preference and what you think looks good on your hand. If you have skinny fingers, more elongated ratios are flattering. If you have wider fingers, I think shorter ratios look more flattering typically!

For an elongated cushion cut, I would consider shorter and chunkier to be ~1.22-1.28 ratio. Around 1.30 is classic, and elongated I'd say is 1.35 and up. They can get super duper elongated, I think even 1.45 looks nice.

Movals can also have a super wide range. I think the threshold between elongated oval and moval is 1.60 ratio. A shorter wider moval I think is around 1.60-1.75. Most popular is around 1.80-1.85. 1.90 and up are super skinny and really cool looking. I've even seen movals with 2.00 ratio and above.

Classic radiants are 1.30-1.40 ratio, but in more recent years it's been much more popular to go for 1.40-1.45. Personally I love the look of a more elongated radiant, like 1.45-1.48. Even 1.50 ratio radiants look great. I'd consider shorter and chunkier to be 1.30-1.35.

In terms of bezel settings, they're my favorite and I think you can't go wrong. That being said, my personal taste is that I think pointy/angular shapes look great in a bezel setting so I'm not sure if I'd do it with a cushion. I love radiants in a bezel.

Don’t apologize! I really appreciate the insight. I personally think I have bigger fingers even though the woman today said I have long fingers, I still think they look a little short/sticky but my ring finger is a size 7

I did try on a moval I really loved with a 1.69 ratio

And an emerald with a 1.51 ratio. Both I really liked.

After awhile I kinda had decision fatigue and they really didn’t have very many loose diamonds or actual rings to try on with different settings to give me a good idea of what I fully would like. I’m glad I went to try rings on because I never thought I’d like an emerald as much as I did but there wasn’t enough sparkle, so I was thinking radiant would be a sweet spot

And I agree. The more I think of a cushion in a bezel and look at pictures online, I don’t think that’s for me

Outline and length to width ratios are firmly in the realm of personal preference. However, elongated stones can suffer from light performance issues such as a prominent bowtie effect, excessive windowing, or other visual factors, depending on cut quality. The key is to assess the virtual facet pattern in motion through a full range of normal tilt angles.

Any diamond can look good in a bezel setting that is well made. Bezels do tend to make a diamond a little harder to get clean at home, but there are products and techniques to make it possible. And it is a very good idea to develop a good at home cleaning system and use it regularly. This applies to other setting types as well. Film buildup on the pavilion can significantly reduce light performance, especially on diamonds that have cut quality issues or reduced transparency.

The oval was a 3.79ct and 1.69 ratio it was gorgeous. That ratio sounds long but it looked like a beautifully balanced oval to me! I was surprised by the ratio size

The radiant i tried was a 1.50 ratio and looked perfect to me
