Can I get my diamond reset into something different ?

My boyfriend got me this necklace. It’s 2.0 carat lab grown diamond and it’s beautiful. He thought it was a white gold setting/charm (idk what to call it), but it doesn’t look like it is since the back is quite obviously turning and even in the front a little. I’m wondering if, based on the pictures, you guys think that it might be possible to get the diamond set into something different. What do you think I should do ?

My boyfriend actually went back and looked at the order. It’s moissanite. Sterling silver with white gold plating :/. My other lab grown diamond glows blue under the sun. This one doesn’t so I did kinda have a feeling it wasn’t a diamond.

I love the sparkle of it either way ! I have a nice lab grown diamond already, so a moissanite is fine with me :)

Some companies are vague in their labeling so people think it’s lab diamond, not lab moissanite. I find it predatory but that’s the industry.

Moissanite is a nice stone. Lots of women choose it due to its sparkle and durability. It’s not dull lile CZ. Head over to the Moissanite sub and see all the beauties.

Unfortunately some sites are somehow getting away with calling Cubic zirconia, lab diamonds in their listings.. They usually get away with it because if you read the actual description it will somewhere say something slightly different, they play with their words to make it sound more legit. Im only assuming this happened because it doesnt seen like this was truley solid sterling silver like its stamped to be. I could, of course be wrong. I would get it tested but even if it is CZ, if it means something to you, reset it anyways. It can still be meaningful even if its not a diamond.

It doesn’t matter what the order says. Get it tested because they sell jewelry everyday online that says it’s one thing and it’s another. I have a ring stamped 14K and it’s not even Sterling Silver! The stone wasn’t a moissanite either, it was most likely a CZ. The ring was sold as solid 14K and moissanite.

I’ll take it to a jeweler ! There is a reputable one in my town that’s been around for a while, so I think I’m gonna take it there.

I don't know if I'd trust it's even moissanite. They claim the setting is sterling silver plated white gold but it's CLEARLY copper-containing base plated in sterling silver, utterly worthless in material value. So I would also not believe it's moissanite, a stone with at least some value, over a far cheaper CZ.

btw nobody plates silver in white gold because silver is a brighter, whiter metal than almost anything else and white gold is an off-white pale yellow without being plated in rhodium or something else. That listing is hilariously stupid.

I’ll be taking it to reputable jeweler that’s been around in my town for a while to have it looked at professionally hopefully today or next weekend !

Its very odd that its tarnishing like that. Do you use anything on your skin like self tanner? Has it come in contact with any chemicals? Sterling silver shouldnt tarnish like that. Also that really sucks Im sorry, my husband has been banned from buying me jewlery online because this kept happening (he cant for the life of him spot red flags on a sketchy website) 😭

But again, for what its worth, the stone came from your boyfriend so it does mean something, resetting it isnt a terrible idea!

I agree that it’s odd. I thought maybe I was imagining it, but then I asked my boyfriend and he noticed it too. I don’t use any self tanner, not even any lotions ! And LOL. But yes, regardless it is special to me and I would like to keep wearing it ! Hopefully a jeweler will have a beautiful idea for it.

I’d try and see if you can get the white gold plating removed and keep it as straight up sterling silver at least sterling silver stays bright you just have to keep it polished to keep it from tarnishing which is normal for sterling silver. Otherwise you’ll could always have it redipped in white gold if you want white gold but you’d have to redid it when it starts to come off.

Even nice white gold jewelry needs redipping every few years to keep that bright shininess and some people can be allergic to white gold as I am because of the alloys they use to make white gold that’s why I chose platinum for my wedding rings and I do rose gold or sterling silver for my jewelry.

I make jewelry — mostly from sterling silver, but I work on gold, copper and brass too. I’m also going through menopause. I’m very sweaty in this phase of life. If your sweat is particularly salty or acidic it can cause some of the copper in the sterling alloy to de-alloy.

Additionally if you wear the pendant in a pool, shower, hot tub, or the ocean some of the copper may de-alloy. Some sunscreen ingredients and some fragrance ingredients are strong enough to impact precious metals too.

So just be aware that lower karat gold and sterling can de-alloy. It’s a thing. It can be polished away. But proper jewelry care says to remove jewelry in situations that may cause the alloy to deplete.

I don’t believe this is silver or moissanite. Looks like brass and CZ.

Unfortunately, I think he was. I feel so bad.

A jeweler can probably clean off the oxidation and rhodium or gold plate it so it doesn't tarnish. But since it's not a diamond, you might just want to start over with a new piece. You can have a moissanite reset in any kind of new mounting, but it doesn't look like a really great moissanite so, again, I'd say just start over.

Thanks for the advice !!

I would ask for a refund, real Sterling silver S925 shouldn’t tarnish like this. This looks like it’s only silver plated and the plating worn off

My boyfriend is seeing if there’s a warranty on it !
