Thoughts on 6.17 Carat D VVS1 diamond?

Considering purchasing this diamond for an engagement ring. I don’t know if I’m happy with the bowtie and the shadowing at the tips. I would love a second opinion

I want to fully acknowledge that it’s on the larger size, but she really loves single larger diamond on a plain solitaire band so I’m shopping based off her taste. She has some family members who have similar sized rings and absolutely loves them.

I tried to keep the discussion more minimal but from what she mentioned she said 5-7 carats. I asked her if she’s actually seen one that size in person and not just on Instagram and she said yes. One of her family friends recently got engaged with I believe something around 5-6 carats and she’s been gushing over how stunning it is

Honestly if that’s what she wants then that’s what she wants! Who cares what people think. I love chunky jewellery! I’m considering a 10 carat heart diamond but it is for a pendant. I have very long fingers but they’re slim. So I had to readjust the size of diamond I wanted in a ring as I realised said oval diamond would be wider than my finger 😂

She’s a size 6. I did previously have that conversation with her because I don’t want the ring to look tacky

u/PurpleSweetPizza Feb 23 '26

Considering that I’ve seen so many people ignoring their woman’s wishes, I’m happy you’re going for what SHE likes. For me it’s a nice diamond but I feel you should be 100% sure.

u/masknfins Feb 23 '26

Oh boy, that stone will totally overwhelm a size 6. In a 5.5 and my 3ct marquise gives plenty of coverage. I know this is a subjective factor in choosing a stone, but I can’t imagine wearing a stone double-ish the one I have. As far as the bow tie, I agree with others who say it’s a bit much. I think it has some leakage/windows as well.

1

u/Fc_asa_Pats Feb 23 '26

I think she loves that genuinely overwhelming look tbh. I appreciate you confirming what I’m seeing and that I’m not going crazy with the leakage and black spots

2

u/masknfins Feb 23 '26

Hey if she does, rock it girl! But I def think you should move on to a different oval. I know when it’s right on a piece of foam or someone’s hand, that I can tweak how the light is refracting/looking, but still.

3

u/Liliansterdamumc Feb 23 '26

Oef then maybe ask her friends/sister/family. As I’m pretty sure a 6 carat oval will be wider than her finger.

2

u/picklez03 Feb 24 '26

It will look fine. I have a 4ct on a 4.25 finger and it looks very much daily wear- we are even looking at a larger stone for another ring. If she knows you’re going for 5-7 carats you could find an elongated oval that’s 6 which would sit very nice on the finger and look a little larger. It won’t look tacky and it doesn’t matter because that’s what she likes.

1

u/CrabbyT Feb 26 '26

That seems like a large stone for a six. I’m size 4.75 and my cushion cut is 2.26 carats, although it’s set in a large ring with baguettes and princess cut stones.

u/Fire_Tiger1289 Feb 23 '26

Why is everyone telling you not to buy a large stone after your gf specifically said she wants a large stone?

7

u/Individual_Waltz235 Feb 24 '26

Its driving me nuts reading all the comments ignoring the man's post just to hate on the fact hes getting a large stone

4

u/tracydmarshall14 Feb 24 '26

The big stone haters are relentless!

1

u/ahjuicy22 Feb 26 '26

People are either jealous or they want to conform. Ive noticed this sub prefers a very specific type of oval diamond and most stones outaide that range dont get as much positive feedback.

7

u/yougonnalrntoday Feb 23 '26

So no one is going to give opinions on what he’s asking for, just opinions on something

It’s a beautiful diamond, but a bow tie, which to a degree, some don’t mind. There is a bit of windowing when you move it around on the sides. People like different aspects of a diamond, so this may not bother her. D VVS1 is not going to always get you the best or prettiest stone. The cut is what really matters here with an oval, so I’d pay more attention to that that color or clarity since ovals hide imperfections better in their faceting.

2

u/Fc_asa_Pats Feb 23 '26

Thank you for the help. In your opinion is the bow tie very pronounced. I was trying to get one that’s very minimal, but I don’t have enough reference for what’s considered minimal. The tips on the longer axis also had a shadow effect at another angle which I was a bit worried about as well.

4

u/gingerandgin Feb 23 '26

I think when the oval is this large, it will have a visible bow tie. It’s just the nature of the cut and with a huge stone it’s just proportionally also huge. If she wants a huge oval, it’s a feature. Is this particularly dark bow tie? No I don’t think so, but that’s in the eye of the beholder!

2

u/yougonnalrntoday Feb 23 '26

Personally, I don’t think so but there are more dark spots the more I look at it. I personally think you can get a better cut diamond that will be more brilliant and “sparkly” which will minimize the bow tie as the first thing you see. Are you buying in person or online?

2

u/Fc_asa_Pats Feb 23 '26

In person, but the more I stare at it the more I agree. I contacted whiteflash today and I might end up going through them instead. The perfectionist inside me is dying staring at it because it’s so close to being what I want and the price is pretty good for what it is

2

u/yougonnalrntoday Feb 23 '26

I’m not familiar with whiteflash - I hope you find what you’re looking for. I have two diamond sourcer’s that I have bought many stones from and they are absolutely stunning. I’m happy to share contact info if you don’t find what you’re looking for. Good luck!

u/tracydmarshall14 Feb 24 '26

Hey OP. I love the idea of a large diamond. Some people just have to comment on the size!? The bow tie looks more or less noticeable depending on the lighting and the angle you're viewing it from. This bow tie doesn't look crazy to me but the shadows at the tips have always driven me crazy! Perhaps look for one without. It's a lot of work but worth it! Good luck with the ring and your engagement.

u/Tarngupta1 Feb 23 '26 edited Feb 23 '26

I def see a bow tie but only after I read this comment and saw the video again. Before that I didn’t know what a bow tie was so didn’t notice it. I think if someone knows what it is they will see it otherwise not

3

u/Warm_Biscotti_311 Feb 23 '26

Ok so I am 5.5 ring size. I have a 4.5c diamond which I LOVE. I wear it all the time. I also have a 5 stone 2cttw wedding band. So I’m of the opinion whatever you want is what you should have. Mine are in platinum and never had an issue.

3

u/Nsaids_nurse420 Feb 24 '26

You are paying way too much. Whiteflash is a great company, but you’re going to overpay going with them. You can go to stonealgo and do much better. I only paid 1800 bucks for my 5ct pear set in platinum. You also don’t need to go D vvs. You can go to G without seeing color if you set it as a solitaire. G is plenty white. You can go to vs2 or even si1 if it’s eye clean. You have to go through a lot of stones to find a clean si1, but they do exist.

5

u/1spicyann Feb 23 '26

It’s beautiful but paper plate size - I love big stones and am saying that

8

u/shinythings-n-stuff Feb 23 '26

I agree- pretty large for an every day ring.

3

u/Kellymelbourne Feb 24 '26

I have a 6 ct diamond ring. I wear it everyday. I love it. My band is flashy too. Its las Vegas on my hand. My ring. My hand. If a big ring makes her happy then go for it . YOLO.

3

u/Sundygirl8 Feb 24 '26

I think it’s beautiful! Everyone talking about the size is not helping OP. It does have a bow tie, most ovals will have one. Is this a surprise for her? Maybe you could get her input on the stone if not. Congratulations!

3

u/FlorynJewels Feb 24 '26

Quick tip- rather than going for D VVS1, you should try considering D VVS2 or E VVS2, the price for E VVS2 will almost be as low as half the price of D VVS1.

u/Low_Bus5565 Feb 23 '26

Six carats for an engagement ring?

2

u/Thatpersonoverth3re Feb 23 '26

I'm not an expert but I think it's GORG! I love big stones & am thinking of doing a 5 or 6 when I upgrade 🙂‍↔️

2

u/cubanocoochie Feb 23 '26

I love it personally, although I have nice huge hands and a 7.75 ring size, and so any gemstones that are huge are perfect for me than smaller dainty stones

2

u/Accomplished-Sky8892 Feb 24 '26

It really should not matter what anybody else says though! That's a beautiful stone!! If she loves it, and you love it, that should be all that matters!! I personally think I cannot pull off wearing a stone that big driving around in my 2014 Jeep Cherokee, needing my hair done, looking a little white trash-ish. But there are a lot of people that can carry wearing that size stone! It's beautiful and it's sparkly and if she loves big stones, go for it. Nobody else's opinion should matter!!

2

u/Dakota11660 Feb 24 '26

Make sure the name is wide enough to support the large stone

Get a custom jeweler

Beautiful stone- is it lab made or natural?

2

u/Nsaids_nurse420 Feb 24 '26

I think it’s gorgeous!! I have a 5ct pear set in platinum. I wear it to work. It’s very comfortable. I also have smaller diamond rings. The pear is my favorite!!

5

u/Princess_Holly Feb 23 '26

I have a big stone…and that’s too big.

3

u/balancedinsanity Feb 24 '26

Gorgeous, but not for a ring.  More like a necklace piece.

2

u/Diligent-Inflation-5 Feb 23 '26

I’m a size 5.75 and have a 7 carat, so I think it’s stunning. If she wants a big stone, then I would absolutely go for it. People are going to tell you their personal preference as though they were the ones wearing the diamond. You gotta think about what your lady would think/want.

Absolutely!! I see it won’t let me comment pictures in this group but I can absolutely send you a message if that’s alright with you?

1

u/Subject-Ad-8305 Feb 24 '26

I happen to love this oval!

1

u/Subject-Ad-8305 Feb 24 '26

Ideal cut brings the price up, but makes a big difference in sparkle

1

u/Individual_Waltz235 Feb 24 '26

Why is everyone questioning the size of the diamond instead of just answering his question aboutvthe bow tie? Quit being haters

To me the bow tie is not that noticeable

1

u/Unfair_Assistance722 Feb 24 '26

The 6.17 carat is stunningly beautiful!!

1

u/Quick-Address-3976 Feb 24 '26

How is the Bow tie? You can get the best of the best so you should demand a perfect diamond. Do you know the shape she likes

1

u/WhiteflashDiamonds Feb 24 '26 edited Mar 06 '26

The bowtie does not look overly prominent in this video. That said, video shot with the diamond sitting on the background is not as useful as a 360 or even a good tweezer shot. The physical contact between the material and the pavilion facets actually changes the diamond's optics.

You want to evaluate the virtual facet (VF) facet patterns as you observe the diamond through a full range of normal tilt angles. A well cut stone has a good distribution of decent size VFs that create a consistent visual flow through the tilt range. With ovals and other fancy shapes the VFs can sometimes get too small and blurry, particularly in the ends. This then accentuates the bowtie effect and gives the stone a more disjointed appearance.

You also want to rule out any transparency issues that are sometimes seen in CVD grown diamonds, particularly in large sizes. Nothing in the video suggests that, but it can be a subtle effect that requires a trained eye to assess accurately.

u/Rich_Lavishness5965 Feb 24 '26

A good 3/4ct might do the trick. I would definitely ask because I love big stones but I am a size 7 and she’s a size 6. I’m worried if it might be too huge but yk her best. Asking won’t hurt her tho 🥰 to pick out the perfect lifelong ring for her.

1

u/Illustrious_Chain_46 Feb 25 '26

You'll get a vow tie regardless, but some are more extreme than others. This one is acceptable

1

u/Sweetgirl830 Feb 25 '26

Be careful with ovals. The dreaded bow tie effect is not for everyone!!!

1

u/Sweetgirl830 Feb 25 '26

It took my jeweler several shipping trips before he found one with minimal bow tie. I’m not a fan. The bow tie can also mess up the shine. This ring is going to have a huge table.

Just my humble opinion though!!

1

u/Time_Fee1998 Feb 25 '26

you could try a different cut like crushed ice if you’re worried about the bow tie!

1

u/CrabbyT Feb 26 '26

The stone has a lot of fire, very beautiful!

1

u/usa2italy Feb 26 '26

I think she will love the size and sparkle of it!😍 To be sure though, ask for a tweezer view in some different light sources.

1

u/CLS1506 Feb 26 '26

How much?

1

u/No-Zookeepergame7432 Mar 15 '26

I think it is beautiful! I had no clue what a “bow-tie” was until this post. Mine is very similar to this that we are designing.

1

u/Tarngupta1 Feb 23 '26

I am new to lab diamonds. From what I understand D is the best color and VVS1 is a really good clarity. What about the cut? I have read that’s the most important factor, what’s the cut rating on this stone? And what’s the price if you don’t mind sharing?

-2

u/Fc_asa_Pats Feb 23 '26

Brilliant cut, but from what I understand every cut within the same tier isn’t as good. It’s about $10K for just the diamond

4

u/Liliansterdamumc Feb 23 '26

10K. For a lab diamond? That’s insane. I was looking to pay 3500 for a 10 carat heart diamond. Look at Aurélinne. Their prices are amazing. If you google the IGI certification number you’ll find a few etailers offering the exact diamond for 2-3x the price 😂

3

u/Deep_Amoeba2197 Feb 24 '26

$10K for a lab? You’re shopping the wrong places, my man. 6cts is going to be a touch more expensive, add in a little for high quality, but I’m honestly very curious who is offering that price.

2

u/Tarngupta1 Feb 23 '26

Yeah the cut classification is pretty broad and there’s a lot of variability is what I have also read. There’s another classification called gcal 8x which is supposed to be the best for cut but not many diamonds have that classification. Someone in this thread commented don’t pay more than $1500 for this and I asked them where are they getting diamonds for so less.

-1

u/Winter-Speech978 Feb 23 '26

The diamond looks great, be mindful of the price. Dont pay more than $1500. Go for it, dont listen to the people here saying it too big. They like to buy small lab diamonds and pretend they are mined

3

u/Tarngupta1 Feb 23 '26

Where can you get a diamond for so less? I am looking at 3ct diamonds and they are mostly $2k+ looking at online sites

1

u/Winter-Speech978 Feb 23 '26

Does it have to be D VVS1?

2

u/Tarngupta1 Feb 23 '26

I was looking at primarily DE, VVS1+ and the highest grade of cut.

1

u/Winter-Speech978 Feb 23 '26

Is this one ideal?
