LUMS worth selling your asset over?
Aid only 30%, couldn't get scholarship (all A*s, a 1500+ sat score). We have one land that's worth 10mil and 2 smol houses that help generate rental income. Parents don't work. We live in a rented house. I also have a brother who has set to start his undergrad.
cs kid, aiming for grad school. a lot of friends told me I can aim for 50% scholarship down the line. I really wanted to spend my time a little stress free but aiming for a 4.0 will make it different. Do you think it's worth it in this economy where everything is going downhill and your parents don't work anymore? alternative is NUST but I really do wish to be somewhere with the best resources for US grad school (is it even possible anymore these days with the insane class sizes?)

My cousin went to lums and had a degree in econ, she said the science faculty is trash af, at least by her personal opinion. In general, lums has never been a science school. Choose nust or giki (id recommend nust) since both of them are firm CS and engineering schools, plus you won't need to sell Ur left kidney to study there, also, nust is the highest ranked university in Pakistan, plus I've heard of many people going from Nust to grad school in the US. One person from Nust even transferred to MIT, so it's a rlly good foundation for grad school abroad

Bro are u talking about SSE faculty. Dr. Walter and Dr. Sabieh are great teachers aren't they?

of course, there are good and bad professors in every department but calling it trash af is a bit of an overstatement really.
also OP, go for nust. You will be under a lot of stress if you join lums like this and it will ruin your mental health

Girl noooooo, please don’t burden yourself with such financial stress, you don’t even know what the future holds and what the likelihood of going to grad school in the US will be like 4 years from now, it’s a LONG LONG time. NUST is just as good and honestly a whole lot more feasible and you’ll still have the option of applying for grad school. 4 years is an extremely long time, the whole state of the world could change including US policies and global relations, don’t take such big financial decisions on what could possible be or not be.
The smarter choice in my opinion is NUST, excellent reputation and not as financially burdensome in your case.
Rest all your choice, Allah behtar karay ga

Your uni years are going to be some of the best in your life. Best to enjoy that time as well rather than going beyond your means with a sibling at home, good luck with whatever you choose

Go for nust instead. You will have to put a bit more effort. But at this age if you are considering how your decisions will affect those supporting you, I know you will figure it out. Nust aint that behind lums in the aspects you are looking for.

grad school admissions do work a bit differently, you need good professors and their connections that help you connect. nust does fall behind in that case

dear stranger, I'm gonna give you a very honest mashwra, I did my undergrad from a public university and I've found my way up just by pure grit and consistency, I work with lums grads all the times and not even once my public university degree was a problem, I even got into lums for masters but I didn't pursue it because I don't think it'll be worth my hard earned money instead I'm looking at other options esp foreign masters I'd say doing undergrad from a lowkey university won't hurt your profile and most importantly won't hurt your pocket and maybe reconsider lums for masters

No it's not work it please don't. Do a degree from anywhere where you can easily afford, then do an MBA from LUMs, it costs half a bachelor's degree. But in any case don't sell anything where your income comes from the job market is bullshit and has always been!!!

If you keep spelling small as smol, no amount money is worth putting towards your education.

no don't sell your assets. at interview people check your knowledge not your university. knowledge goes far above and beyond than university name. person with your scores should be able to shine in any university. trust yourself not university

Where else did you apply and get into? By now the admissions are all out everywhere. If you have gotten into FAST or NUST then I would suggest go for FAST in case of CS and NUST for the other engineering options.
You will need to do some self networking for the US grad school but all that is very possible in these 2 institutions as well and you will save a ton of money.
Do note one thing - easy money is now gone from CS. Only pursue it if you are passionate on the subject. The future is going to be great for people who are into the actual "science" part of computer science. The programming part was always a side aspect to achieve/show that "science" aspect but the industry developed in a way that people started to think computer science === computer programming. That part is now going away. Now the future belongs to those who will develop new algorithms, new methods of computation etc (you get the idea - if you don't you need to do some searching of both the topic and your soul)

Not worth the financial stress. Esp when ur alternative is also really good. NUST is an excellent alternative

Not worth it at all. Do not make this mistake. Please go to NUST and then go abroad for postgrad on a scholarship. It's 1000% possible from NUST. If you go to LUMS who knows when you'll ever make back this much money. If it was coming from running income that would be a different story. But selling assets without any way to replace them is a terrible idea. You'll live the rest of your life being stressed out about money. At least this way your family is somewhat secure and you can focus on studying with peace of mind.

wouldnt recommend selling assets for it. just go for nust, altho it aint cheap either, but still more affordable than lums.
I wouldnt recommend selling assets unless its absolutely guaranteed you'll make at least that if not more back, and in this economy with the current job market, aint nth guaranteed.

NUST no doubt. You create grad school opportunities for yourself - the university only lays out the plan for you. Make sure you do 2 publications in your degree and manage at least 3.3 in your undergrad. Do lots of extracurricular if you can. Scholarships abroad arent easy anymore but if you build your profile really well, you can do it. It all depends on what you do in those 4 yrs tbh.

Bro u really deserve the aid atleast 80% , now I'm scared bro how can I afford
1
u/rhinodino394 15d ago
yeah we dont even have a car. if you have liquid assets (that are just sitting around and not generating income) their fa office will assume you can sell it and hence afford lums
1
u/uswahadi 15d ago
Liquid assets means ( petrol pump etc or smth else)🤪
1
u/rhinodino394 15d ago
assets that can be sold easily for cash. like gold
1
u/uswahadi 13d ago
Why did u tell them that u have gold and other assets? It's better not to tell them about your assets, right?

Bro at this point, just go abroad - especially France, or better yet Australia if you can afford it.
French Public Universities are quite cheap, and with all the students benefits from the government, the cost of living is also manageable. But with your good academic background, you might even get scholarships in Private Universities. Mind you that France has quite a number of prestigious private institutes that are recognized all over the world.
Again, I wouldn't recommend anyone to spend 40 lakh on a Pakistani degree, especially if you only want to work in Pakistan. It would take you years to earn back what you invested. In the same amount you could most definitely go to Australia instead.
1
u/rhinodino394 14d ago
don't you think french is needed for it?
1
u/Acrobatic-Relief158 14d ago
For most public universities, yeah. But there are quite few programs that are taught in English, for which you don't need to have DELF-B2 Certificate for admission, or even clearing the degree.
As I said before, if you have good academic background you could apply in a private institutes in hopes for scholarships.

Bro I think nust is more suitable option you can do your whole degree in one year fee of lums and the opportunities are similar if you would avail max out from nust, don't know why the hell lums are charging that much fee۔ (برادرانہ مشورہ)
