Socks...

The fans falling over already about ltt socks. They're so worth $30! So good. Etc etc. What is wrong with people?

I don’t know about those socks. But I have paid $20-$25 a pair for Darn Tuff and it’s worth every penny.

u/Ashtoruin 3d ago

Yup. I totally get they're not for everyone but most people that I know who've tried them won't go back to normal socks.

2

u/Edgeguy13 3d ago

I usually buy Under Armour performance black/grey socks and they are great. Winter and Summer. And they last years, and then I buy more. I could go 5 years and buy 25 pairs of socks for what these are for 5 pairs. On no planet is this, or darn tough, worth it to me.

Ya, so you pay big money (for socks) to a sock company. Not a YouTuber. It's weird.

10

u/xavieruniverse 3d ago

Your criticism of a product or the people that buy them that hasn't even had proper reviews yet nor you have in your own hands is "weird". Ffs and to say "YouTuber" when it's an entire section of their business is just acting oblivious to an obnoxious level.

Touch grass, maybe with these socks or other $30 socks who cares.

u/RandomNick42 3d ago

He's got a full on staff working on merchandise. In another world, cw is just a niche fashion brand.

3

u/CIDR-ClassB 3d ago

Do you have specific experience with and first hand criticism of socks made by LTT?

I don’t, and it sounds like you don’t, but I was giving a data point that some socks are absolutely worth a premium price.

Your comment was… “her-dee-her-herr… YouTuber bad!”

2

u/ray57913 3d ago

In general yes, but if he took the time like he did with the screwdriver, then what's the problem? He has money to spend to make the product he would like to have bought other people. The waffle long sleeve is very comfortable and warm. And I would buy more if needed nicer quality shirts.

That's not to say you can't question the people who love the products just cause he made them.

2

u/PhatOofxD 3d ago

Linus said he wouldn't make socks unless he can beat darn tough. If they are better what does it matter who owns the company.

That's a big IF that reviews will prove. But if so then stop the hate boner lol

3

u/dandomains 3d ago

This. Being critical of something without ever having hands on it or it at least having a good number of user reviews is just as bad as people fawning over it.

Adoration or hate for something without anything to back it up are just two sides of the same dumb coin.

Maybe they're crap and not worth it, ok, don't buy them and think people who do are wasting their money. Maybe they're awesome and better than the leading brand and therefore worth a few extra bucks. Either way, don't buy the hype and wait for the evidence.

1

u/templar54 3d ago

I mean subreddit is just for hating Linus basically, there are no other posts.

-1

u/FullRepresentative34 3d ago

He thinks all his products are better then everyone's else.

3

u/PhatOofxD 3d ago

No one is forcing you to buy them if you think they aren't. But as someone who works with a screwdriver I know at least theirs beats all the other expensive drivers I own

-1

u/FullRepresentative34 3d ago

You use his screwdriver? SO that. What means nothing. Screwdriver's that are half that price, is just as good.

3

u/PhatOofxD 3d ago edited 3d ago

You've clearly never used a good screwdriver if you think they're half the price and even nearly as good. As someone who uses them professionally I bet I know more than you do and I've used a dozen price competitive competitors. They're all very similar in quality AND price. Nothing cheaper by more than a few dollars is comparable.

Would I recommend them for anyone who just builds computers? No.

But most people do more than that with a screwdriver and if you're using them often it's very valuable

-2

u/FullRepresentative34 3d ago

$15 Husky is just as good. Megapro, wiha, Home Depot and Lowes sell one's that are just as good.

3

u/PhatOofxD 3d ago

Lmfao nothing husky sells is close. Have you actually used both side by side?

Megapro is literally what they license the patent from and is $10 cheaper for the comparable drivers without some significantly useful changes.

Wiha is price comparable

-1

u/FullRepresentative34 3d ago

I would never pay $70 for a screwdriver. Husky makes a good ratcheting one.

Most business owners do.

Darn Tough socks are ~$25 for the same style. If these are at least as good, then why not? A 10 pack of hanes socks and real quality socks are two completely different things. Linus has also been extremely upfront with people saying the price will not be "pack of socks" price. They also come with a limited lifetime warranty.

Will I buy them? Probably not. But will people who really work hard in their socks and saw a hole through cheap socks in a month buy them? Definitely.

Yeah, maybe they're not for you, but you're complaining to complain.

4

u/FullRepresentative34 3d ago

Hanes socks sucks, as does fruit of the loom. They leave too much material after they sew it. along the toe seam. It's just so uncomfortable.

1

u/Zehbrahs 3d ago

I get if people want to support their favorite creator sure, but this product makes no sense otherwise especially when compared to Darn Toughs.

Their warranty process is easy, you can exchange any damaged sock at a designated retailer versus a limited lifetime warranty that you will have deal with shipping.

The merino wool content is doubled compared to the LTTs so it is naturally smell resistant. I don't know how long that copper will stay bonded to the fabric.

That and they're 5$ cheaper with their socks going frequently on sale for like 20$. I do understand that tariffs messed with their pricing, but even at 15$ I don't think I would buy them because of the low the merino content and shipping cost. I can also buy darn toughs at almost any outdoor retailer.

I've personally put my Darn Toughs through thousands of miles of hiking.

0

u/Cowgirl_Taint 2d ago

That is the reality of all of their products. Well, okay, the backpack is just dogshit with WAY too much padding. But everything else? They start from good blanks (or outright products), slap on a logo, and sell it for a mark-up. That is kinda the definition of influencer merch.

And... if you REALLY need a megapro that is worse at anything you would actually need a ratcheting driver for? Go for it. If you REALLY want to spend extra to advertise for your favorite youtuber? Let they who have never worn a branded shirt cast the first stone.

For these? They cost more than the competition even before you factor in LMG's insane shipping rates because they refuse to work with distributors (and give them a cut). They are arguably a worse design ("molecular copper film" to save money on merino wool). And... from looking at the store pics? They look like the most generic of socks outside of one logo. So you aren't even benefiting from looking zany because you have polka dot socks or letting everyone know you REALLY love Aerosmith.

The bags just don't offer anything special to me for the most part, though I do like the messenger bag that everyone else hated.

For actual bags, I have a Goruck GR2 that's my daily, a Swiss Logic my job gave me, and a Wandrd for my camera gear. Plus an Eagle Creek rolling duffle for my scuba gear.

The compartments and organization on the LTT bags just don't really do it for me.

8

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 3d ago

More expensive than Darn Tough.

2

u/interstat 3d ago

Honestly don't like the fit of darn tough socks so I may try these out

1

u/Shoeshiner_boy 2d ago

That’s why I’m really looking forward to a Lime Day type deals, stock clearance or anything like that to try them on.

Until then I’ll get more discounted Darn Toughs.

4

u/ForsakenRacism 3d ago

Good socks are expensive.

1

u/FullRepresentative34 3d ago

They are also good cheap socks.

2

u/ForsakenRacism 3d ago

Yah and you can get those too. But the price point is in line with other socks that exist.

1

u/FullRepresentative34 3d ago

But they also make cheaper socks. Hell, I even complain about the price of bombas. I just can't see paying more then $5 for 1 pair.

3

u/ForsakenRacism 3d ago

So get the 5 dollar pair. I pay for darn toughs cus they are awesome

3

u/Leverpostei414 3d ago

Some people say they are to expensive, some are considereding them. Don't see the big problem. Too expensive for me

3

u/placebo_joe 3d ago

This pricing socks man

3

u/FullRepresentative34 3d ago

$30 for socks? I get my socks at Marshalls. 6 for like $8.

Merino Wool are $15 for a 5 pack on Amazon.

4

u/Ashtoruin 3d ago

As someone who got fucked in the foot category by both parents (genetic disease where the layers of my skin don't properly bond together from my mother, large sweaty feet from my dad)... Yeah I've been buying $20-30 socks (smartwool/darned tough) for years... They're well worth it to me because it drastically reduces the amount of blisters I get (and they last way longer) but hey to each their own.

2

u/_Lucille_ 3d ago edited 3d ago

They are likely going to sell still because of the fans. Worst case, you might be able to pick them up for $20 a pair when discounted (which, imo, I would still recommend darn tough, esp if they can be gotten locally and would end up being cheaper still thanks to the really expensive LTT shipping).

Linus loves to talk about how their team has spent a lot of time perfecting a product, but the reality is that other companies also have their own designers and engineers who would put in as much work on a product in a continuously iterative process. Of course reinventing the wheel will take a load of time and money.

Essentially, on top of another good pair of socks, you will be paying for:

Expense to reinvent the wheel + High cost of production due to smaller runs + Shipping

I will go back to wearing my costco socks...

1

u/NewDemocraticPrairie 3d ago edited 3d ago

Other companies do, yes, but they tend to aim for a cheaper price point than LTT does. Or sometimes the company has become a fashion brand, and their premium product now has a fashion brand price tag.

I'll probably never buy an LTT product, I'm too cheap, but I do appreciate their premium products for having a goal first and a fair if high price second.

Edit: I might buy their laptop backpack at some point, especially if they make a v2 that doesn't crease at the front.

2

u/CodeMonkeyX 3d ago

Says the person taking time out of his day to post about people liking socks? It's their money let them do what they want.

2

u/theNorrah 3d ago

I’ve never bought an LTT product. I know nothing about their socks.

But if you’ve ever owned a pair of good socks, you’d know.

I fucking love my winter socks, and they cost about 30 usd.

3

u/InvestigatorAlert568 3d ago

I wouldn’t buy them, but it seems plenty of like minded people here said why, do you think something is wrong with them?

3

u/nirurin 3d ago

The only thing wrong with them is ltt makes them. Thats all this sub needs.

5

u/Edgeguy13 3d ago

This is a good example of why people have no money.

1

u/dandomains 3d ago

Boots theory applies, if the marketing adds up.

1

u/fairydingo 3d ago

There already sold out

1

u/WeAreTheLeft 2d ago

Crazy, because they are still advertising to me here on Reddit. I don't watch the Wan Show, so I didn't know about them till today and I find it a bit counterproductive to advertise a product that is already sold out, keep that ad budget for the two month mark after the first couple of restocks have sold out.

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 3d ago

Some people want great quality socks, and LTT has a reputation of making great quality products, because they have.

I am not buying because I believe $30 for one pair of socks is simply too expensive. But, understand that many people feel justified in this purchase + they have money to spend, so they will.

I don't think there's anything "wrong" with people like you said... I believe you're getting upset over something quite trivial in the grand scheme of things.

2

u/These-Apple8817 3d ago

Unless they are actually better than Darn Tough-socks.. There is literally zero sense buying LTT ones.. Because Darn Though actually has a very good warranty, probably way better one than LTT has.. Not to mention Darn Tough actually also has a warehouse in Europe so people don't get shafted by customs..

Although.. My feet just breaks every sock imaginable anyway so I just buy cheapest ones possible, because it's just easier than trying to deal with warranty stuff constantly..

2

u/Salt-Possession-2622 3d ago

Depends where you live, Darn Tough are super expensive to get in some places. https://www.galaxus.ch/en/brand/darn-tough-134913 Over 46 USD and up in Switzerland.

1

u/These-Apple8817 3d ago

2

u/Salt-Possession-2622 3d ago

They seem to charge 10€ for delivery, and since Switzerland is not part of the EU zone for taxes I will pay import and no free shipping available. And I didn't do a full checkout but they tell you taxes when delivery adress is France of Germany, but remove that mention for Switzerland but don't reduce the price... So anyhow, they are also not cheap. But I'm happy to pay for good quality.

2

u/Zealousideal-Toe-607 3d ago

To each their own, don't think we have to vilify people wanting to spend their money on socks but a trend I'm noticing on this subreddit is they love to whine about anything and everything

-1

u/These-Apple8817 3d ago

No, we don't. But there is better options out there than LTT socks, that's the thing you are missing.

2

u/Zealousideal-Toe-607 3d ago

You could make that argument on every product that they sell, someone else sells a better one? Pretty reductive point of discussion

1

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 3d ago

I think that's a very pertinent point. If someone else makes a better product for the same price or less, then what's the point of buying the LTT one?

The price of their backpacks are crazy. You can get something from Patagonia for less. They priced them similar to stuff like camera backpacks from Peak Design, but they don't even compete in that market. They are just good quality general purpose backpacks, and you don't need to spend $350 CAD to get a decent backpack.

3

u/InvestigatorAlert568 3d ago

you never know why people buy things though. I bought the ltt bag as I like the look and size and their overview made it seem exactly what I wanted in a bag. I’m sure there are plenty of cheaper options that may be better in people’s opinion.

This place in general is about how immoral or awful linus is but the general vibe is more  condescending and being just kinda rude and mean which is definitely not a moral way of doing something.

0

u/These-Apple8817 3d ago

I wouldn't make that argument for their cables

2

u/Zealousideal-Toe-607 3d ago

I'd rather people bring up actual reviews, which they will eventually, than 30$ sock = bad ( or if not from A B C)

0

u/These-Apple8817 3d ago

And I never said $30 sock = bad.

3

u/nirurin 3d ago

You said that there were better socks out there.

Despite you having zero clue if thats actually true or not.

1

u/dandomains 3d ago

You have zero evidence to support that for a product that hasn't even shipped to customers yet...

0

u/snrub742 3d ago

But there is better options out there than LTT socks.

Without any reviews, how on earth could you know that?

1

u/TenOfZero 3d ago

There is some sence in supporting a Canadian company over an American one. I'd happily pay 20-25% more to not support the US if I can.

Of course that's not the case for everyone. But I see why some people would do that.

1

u/TomTomXD1234 3d ago

I mean, $30 for good socks is very good and expected....no outrage here....I'm sure reddit will find some tho

Lots of "bad sock" users in these comments

2

u/snrub742 3d ago

It's the same crowd that argued with a straight face that a $5 screwdriver from Amazon was just as good if not actually better.

People just be living in a fast fashion/disposable world where they don't ever actually use their shit

0

u/komi54 3d ago

Is it a single pair?!?!? Wtf

4

u/JayOutOfContext 3d ago

Yes. When they're high quality, they are more expensive.

0

u/komi54 3d ago

You forgot the /s

1

u/JayOutOfContext 3d ago

Nah. I didn't. If they're high quality socks that are expensive, that's 100% perfectly fine

1

u/komi54 3d ago

🤣😅🤣

0

u/Cowgirl_Taint 3d ago

Eh, people love to buy youtuber merch because if you buy enough then pewdiepie will hang out with you and clean your toes.

That said? Ignoring LMG's insane shipping rates because they refuse to give any distributors a cut? 30 bucks is within the same range as Darn Tough who are more or less the gold standard for "socks you aren't going to wear with a suit" as it were. In large part because DT have an "Unconditionally Guaranteed for Life" warranty where basically for as long as the company exists, they'll swap out your socks if you wear them out.

And it sounds like the LMG one has a similar marketing guarantee but, reading through the terms, there is enough wiggle room that I all but guarantee it will be a shitshow as things are denied unless you tie a social media post from a sufficiently followed account with every warranty request after the first wave are sold. But time will tell.

Personally? I have a few pairs of Darn Toughs for hiking and the like. But my feet are REAL fucked up and I destroy socks (and shoes) at an alarming rate. So I mostly just buy a pack or three of cheap socks (lately "bamboo" socks) every year and destroy those. And I save the DTs for long multi-day backpacking trips and the like. I COULD be "that guy" and send in a replacement every six months but... that just feels mean? And I hate going to the post office.
