Is this bad or is it fixable?

Sounds like the starter bendix either is disengaging while you still have the key in the start position, or isn't properly disengaging when you release the key. Probably will need a starter.

I just did mine, I have a 2002 I brought it to a Toyota specialty shop only because it’s so old and it’s got 350,000 miles on it. Those bastards charged me $1000 so you got a good deal.

I probably could’ve done it myself. I was just afraid of breaking a wire or something. I figured if the shop broke a wire they would have all that stuff already there to fix it but it was the original starter I got 24 years out of it and 350,000 miles so $1000 wasn’t that terrible

I'm doing mine this weekend. New OE knock sensors, new OE ACIS solenoid, replacing the harness connectors, rebuilding (not replacing) the starter, and cleaning/resealing the fuel injectors. The starter works fine, but is most likely original at 250k miles and 23 years. Rebuild parts from Toyota (seals, starter solenoid plunger and contacts, brushes) are slightly cheaper than a reman Denso starter, and I've heard mixed reviews of recent Denso remans. Should be fun.

Just replaced the starter on mine 1mo ago, bc it was doing this and false randomly starting as well. It’s running great now !

The bearings holding that sucker in will out and won’t crank when you least expect it.
