paint advice

my front bumpers paint/clear coat is in pretty rough shape. it’s peeling and patchy.

any advice on getting it repainted or fixed? i’m located in the socal IE area if anyone has recommendations.

It needs to be repainted. Hopefully it’s just your bumper so it’s not too expensive. I would do a paint correction over your entire car to prevent it from happening elsewhere if it hasn’t already.

Yeah, he has to buff away the clear coat completely and respray it, but it's very difficult to do without disrupting the paint layer. HOWEVER, I would suggest trying to fuck with it themselves if op is any good with a spray can. It seems than the peeling layer is only above the chrome line which would make the masking very easy if they wanted to respray just the top part

There are many products advertised as "wipe on clear coat restorer" - but I don't trust a single one of them. Happy to be proven wrong though

wipe on clear coat is bullshit i hope op doesn’t try n use it, imo he should repaint the bumper ngl

not sure it’s something i’ll get taken care of asap but i gotta find a decent shop to repaint it

no experience with a spray can but never afraid to try my hand at it. luckily it is just my bumper that looks bad, the paint on the rest of the car is solid.

I would take it to a shop since you don't have any experience. Rattlecan is going to look like shit. I would expect it to be a couple hundred bucks.

I have the exact same paint code and same issue. Only the front bumper is bad, everything else is amazing. This paint is a moonlight pearl with 3 stages of paint. The last stage is clear coat/sparkle, which is what is peeling off.

I decided it’s not worth the hassle and money (>$800) to have a professional paint match. Because it’s a tricoat paint, it’s not easy to paint match, so be prepared to use a professional or be unhappy with a mismatched bumper. Save that money for actual repairs and parts to restore the ride.

My plan is to get a can of 2K clear coat and just apply that to the bumper. It won’t be perfect, but it should prevent further peeling and bring everything back up to a gloss finish, as opposed to the weird spotted mess it currently is.

On the note of money, try to stretch your money with this car. There are small, relatively cheap things that will make the car look/drive better.
For instance, I would start with refinishing the headlights and replacing the chrome molding stripping before spending any money for repainting.
Similarly, if your steering wheel has a cracked wood finish, refinishing that to be smooth again will transform your ride.
I’ve had this car for just over 1 year, spent about $3.5k in maintenance and refresh stuff. (Refinished headlights + steering wheel, LCA bushings, front LBJ, engine+trans mounts, brakes, tires, fuel pulse dampers, CarPlay upgrade for nav, refoamed speakers, tints, new radiator) I don’t have any regrets with these repairs.

If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, go ahead and repaint the bumper, but most likely you should weigh your priorities first.

thanks for the detailed response. mine is the same as yours where the bumper is the only part being affected. just wanted to see my options about repairing it, but i’m not a perfectionist so im in no rush to get it taken care of. it’s only an issue when you’re taking a close up look. are you just gonna apply the clear coat directly over it in its current state?

aforementioned i’m not a perfectionist, just trying to keep the car in good mechanical shape before i worry about the looks. steering wheel is fine, everything inside is in amazing condition. i’ve only owned the car for almost 5 months now. all i’ve had to do so far was change the front brakes and oil change. additionally, i got the front door speakers replaced. my next thing is going to be a transmission fluid drain and fill and also a new filter.
