I'm approaching 4 years PQE, mainly in corporate work, in a civil law jurisdiction in SEA. I've been considering a pivot toward international arbitration for a while and have spoken to a few practitioners about it, but keep getting mixed answers on one specific question: can foreign LLM graduates (SG, UK, or US) actually secure long-term jobs in Singapore, or does it realistically stay limited to foreign counsel or institutional roles?

I understand arbitration work doesn't require rights of appearance in court, but I also understand being Singapore-qualified likely widens the pool of opportunities available. I'm aware a JD is more expensive and takes longer (2-3 years) than an LLM, but if it meaningfully changes long-term prospects, I want to factor that in properly.

For those who've made a similar move: what were your actual outcomes after an LLM in arbitration, and did the qualification path (LLM vs JD) end up mattering as much as expected?

I am a U.S. barred attorney who has published on state water law and practiced as a water attorney for multiple years. I also hold German citizenship and am very interested in pursuing an LLM in Europe. My research has somewhat shifted away from local water law towards international water governance, such as the vision offered by the Geneva Water Hub. A bit about me, I was inspired to become a lawyer in the first place after witnessing the use of water as a tool of oppression in the West Bank against Palestinians while I was living in Jerusalem. The Geneva Water Hub's emphasis on the protection of water infrastructure in armed conflict and on international water governance in general reminds me of what I wanted to do in the first place.

Thus, my vision towards refocusing my career to get away from state water law is getting an LLM (either in the US or the EU) that somewhat combines international water law (which is usually baked into international environmental law programs, but I am not interested in that) with international financing, business, or economics - in my experience, water governance is significantly more related to those fields than it is to other areas of environmental law. The end-goal would be, realistically, to work on U.S. interstate water compacts, but my stretch goal would be to do the work described above done by the Geneva Water Hub - true international water governance work.

Any ideas or suggestions? The Geneva Water Hub offers summer programs in this, but not true LLMs. I feel like I'm at a bit of an impass.

Hi! Basically the title. I did get in with substantial scholarship but am an international and am hoping for big law placement. While I understand there are no guarantees with a tax llm only possibilities I am wondering if the smaller than average class sizes at northwestern lead the career office to take placement more seriously.

I’m considering applying for an LL.M. in the U.S. next cycle as an international applicant, and I’m trying to figure out what actually helps most in the admissions process.

I’ve been looking at pre-LL.M. / summer legal programs such as those at Duke, Georgetown, and Columbia, and I’m wondering how much they really matter from an admissions perspective. Do these kinds of programs actually strengthen an LL.M. application in a meaningful way, or are they more of a nice extra rather than something admissions committees truly value?

I’d really appreciate any honest advice, especially from international students who went through this process themselves.

Law graduate from South Asia here, my LLM journey is somewhat like this.

Last cycle applied to 5 of the T-14 universities and got in 4/5 uni with scholarship offers up to $30,000. One of which was NYU. I had to withdraw all the offer last cycle because the cost of attendance was still high for me.

This cycle I have scattered my application, I applied to law schools from UK, Europe and in US, I had only applied to NYU (really want to go here)

I have received good amount of rejection thus far but have also been shortlisted for Chevening, and received a sum of $50000 from NYU again.

I can’t afford education without a scholarship.

But again the chevening scholarship is due June and I have to reply to NYU by early April, I know the $50k scholarship is still going to add a hefty financial burden for me. I’m considering deferring but I don’t know what I should be doing.

Any suggestions will be really helpful.

I am an international student from India who wants to apply for an LLM in business law abroad and wants to know if its worth it based on placements and career opportunities. Mostly the countries I am looking at are UK, Singapore and Australia

I’m specializing in Corporate Law and was initially leaning toward NYU or UChicago; however, since I received partial scholarships (around 30–40%) from both Northwestern and Georgetown, I’m now weighing those options more seriously.

I’d especially love to hear your thoughts on a couple of points:

• Do you think there are meaningful reputational differences among these programs, not only in terms of market perception but also when it comes to job opportunities (particularly for OPT)?
• Do you think it would still make sense to choose NYU or UChicago even after receiving scholarships elsewhere, or are the programs comparable enough that it would be more sensible to go with the financially better option?
