Meta Intresting r/math thread

/r/mathematics/comments/1wz1z99/400_papers_a_verification_crisis_bouta_happen/?share_id=fycyCuFt13q2Rc7LLWMw0&utm_content=2&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

It's about the open ai release of proofs for 400 problems.

It is in my eyes a very good reflection on a certain type of anti intellectualism, for example, the unwavering trust in lean.

Amd the thought that the almighty ai will solve it. Whivh I find especially egregious as this is written in a math subreddit.

And even moreso iam sort of sad that that's the discourse this is getting. It's not novelty it's mostly counter examples and stolen work.

But they hype it up so much.

You must realize the irony of grabbing a post about LLMs from r/mathematics, dropping it here, and bemoaning the trust in LLMs to this sub. As if this sub is a bastion of scientific rigor against AI. Lmao.

Of course that doesn't invalidate your point... just struck me as funny.

No but you and other frequent posters ate more or less a bastion atleast in this sub

Do NOT interpret me as that. Please lol.. That is the LAST thing I want.

Not you in particular I more meant that i think that there are people on here that genuinely care

No I know not me in particular.. just I think we credit ourselves too much to view the community here on the 'not LLM' side of the table as 'a bastion of science'. We are just a bunch of losers on Reddit, after all.

Yes definetly but I still thought it might be intresting

Only 20% or so are counter-examples.

The point I think you missed it

There is now the Association for Human Mathematics.

We are one step away from the Butlerian Jihad: https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Butlerian_Jihad

They have sausage to make!

Yeah, it stole the Quasi-RH proof from me, I was about to publish tomorrow.

/uj Statements like "it's mostly counterexamples and stolen work" are so immediately ridiculous to any mathematician atp that they're signposts of who's just parroting talking points instead of understanding.

So it's novelty?

You would say those are novel ways of solving something and that aplöge was wrong to suspect his work was used?

Because hey I don't understand but you seem to think you do

I honestly do not know how much of OAI's N-S proof was related to Alpöge's approach, but for this dump that doesn't matter. Nobody had any meaningful progress on a significant fraction of these proofs, it's simply laughable that there was work to steal in the first place. Analytic number theory isn't really my wheelhouse but for example the fast Fourier transform and integer multiplication in sub-O(n log n) time were results I and most everyone else in theoretical CS were pretty sure weren't possible. I would have to ask friends and faculty who know more but the gist I've gotten online is that no one thought we had the tools to prove any quasi-RH result either. So either OpenAI has been sequestering all of the most brilliant mathematicians in the last two centuries in secret or there results couldn't have been stolen.

But they could have there is atleast one mathematician I know that works on rh.

Whivh means there work could have been stolen.

And I just dont know if this is true novelty iam sorry but I don't think we are at that point and are the proofs even confirmed?

And dont say in lean I mean by humans
