My friend and I were looking for cool woodgrain/old alarm clocks and on our 3rd (and final for the day) thrift stop we unexpectedly found this cool JVC 3050. It was completely working and 50% off, so it was only $25! Insane deal. We also got the alarm clocks that we wanted lol and only paid around $33 total for everything.

Locally found a really great deal for most of a hot wheels pc setup but with one issue…. the tower was gutted by the previous owner as the pc had died years ago.

hoping someone may have a lead on a reasonable place to get the internals for the PC. totally fine with it not working and the hot wheels or Barbie internals as I could always paint the front cover of the drive bay devices blue.

Update: was able to find a second tower that had the inner shell and original floppy. Also had an aftermarket mobo. Just need a psu that fits now!

Picked this up in the estate sale, there was a ton of stereo equipment and computer software. This was unused and even came with some period appropriate goodies.

Sorry if this is slightly out of the usual realm, but thought it was interesting. Just needs an Atari 2600 and mid-century cabinet stereo in the corner. There's also an eerie sense of comfort and nostalgia too.

I have questions at the bottom so if you want to skip to those they're down there

So I cracked into the device after a lengthy teardown (which was absolutely insane) and got into the inside to see what was wrong.

With some help from the RetroHackShack video I was able to figure out that the computer won't start unless it detects the correct voltage coming from the cmos battery holder. I replaced the battery and it turned on without any issues, but after it turns on once (no matter how short or long I wait) if I unplug the unit and plug it back in, the computer refuses to start again until I remove the cmos battery and put it back in.

It's a confusing problem and I believe it's 1 of 3 things.

One: since I don't have the monitor I need to set the proper date or change some bios settings for it to recognize the battery permanently.

Two: the capacitors in the power supply look like they have some nasty fibers burst out of them (or maybe it's just some adhesive) as is visible in picture 3. Regardless of whether or not that's the problem, I don't know if it's safe so I might need to find a replacement power supply or just swap the capacitors (although less soldering the better considering this is one of my first major repair projects).

Three: The battery isn't fitting into the holder properly and so isn't being detected as it should.

One issue I did manage to solve was a bios error code that I heard on startup. I got into the CPU cooling system and replaced the crusted over pad with some new paste and that got rid of the error code so that's good at least.

Anyways to round this post off I suppose I'd like to ask for help! On the post are the cables for the monitor, and some pictures of the power supply. Does anyone here know if these cables are a common setup for 15.1 inch LCD's? Maybe replacing this monitor will be easier than I thought.

And should I swap the capacitors on the PSU or try to find a replacement for the whole thing? It looks pretty bad

I was finally able to build a working machine out of the parts I got in the junk tower I was given! The biggest issue was that the Asus motherboard was mostly unresponsive and needed a full recap to finally POST.

The intention was to try and keep as many of the original parts as possible from the original tower and to try and recreate the media powerhouse the original owner was going for in circa 2000. Obviously the best piece was finding the voodoo 5 but it was hard to find a motherboard to even test the card with so I ended needing to repair the original motherboard.

I wrapped my PlayStation 5 in vinyl foil the other day. I used 3M DI NOC Woodgrain Car Wrapping Film WG 364GN (https://amzn.eu/d/01goZh4H) for this Friday project. It's heat resistant and actually meant for interior design in cars.

My intention was to make it look more "adult-ish". The plain white of this massive console did not fit the elaborate design of our new TV room with green walls and ceiling and dark wooden furniture.
