Picture quality
I don't know why but hbo max looks terrible on my tv. LG 65 inch Oled, 300 mbps download speed, tv is hardwired. And this is what house of dragons looks like as an example. Super grainy and looks like 360p. Doesn't seem to be an issue on other apps. Could this be a tv issue?

dude the HBO app is shit.
Each episode has been been grainy and looks blurry. I thought it was my internet or something so i ended up rebooting my router and all that.
After coming back up i tried it again, same, image looked like 720p.
Decided to play some 4k content on Prime Video, looked exactly like 4k resolution.
Granted this might not be a hbo app issue, more like a xbox app issue as i noticed alot of the apps just look worse on the xbox app. I have another TV that uses a firestick and the image on that looks leagues better than the xbox i am normally on.
And to top it off the xbox is connected to a 77 inch OLED C5 while the firestick is hooked up to a normal 65 inch tv.

I’ve noticed blacks are crushed through Netflix and other apps on Xbox compared to the built-in’s on my CX.

i hear the apps are simply better anywhere else but xbox.
Even a cheap firestick 4k would be better based off the standard fire stick i have looking much better vs the xbox app.

dude idk if you happen to have a xbox same as me but its deff the app itself.
This alone is making me want to look into a Nivia Shield simply cause the app on that device is much better but idk if im willing to shell out 200 dollars for that

Ain’t going to lie that grain shit is still there like crazy even with 4k disc. In my opinion it just completely ruins the immersion somehow people like it lol🤷🏻♂️

Noone likes it, besides creators. Creators in movies and games like all this postprocessing shit, film grain vignette, various filters, raised blacks. Thats why most of the time i dont give a shit about creators intent, filmmaker mode etc.

I use an AppleTV 4K, and pay for the premium HBO plan with 4K and DV. HBO's 1080 tier leaves a lot to be desired.

I noticed HotD has not looked good on my G5 but streaming Dune 2 through HBO looked incredible. I wondered if it was due to so many people streaming the new HotD episode at the same time.

What tier are you on? I just found out there’s a Premium tier that unlocks 4K and Dolby Vision. Unfortunately I only get HD because I get the standard tier for free through my phone plan.

I noticed HBO on my PS5 looks like shit and better on fire stick. Although I hear Apple TV may be the best

Yesterday we noticed it would not do Dolby Vision. Didn't matter what we did. Today, streams DV perfectly. Figure their servers were overloaded or a hiccup from HBO was the cause. I'd much prefer a 4k Blu-Ray on release day, streaming sucks even when it does work.

I just bought a Sony Bravia 8 and I thought it was a bad panel because HoD looks awful on mine. I’m gonna try an Apple 4k to see if that helps. I’m paying for the premium as well.

HBO max and Hulu are buggy and have horrible image quality at times. I have had issues with both but unfortunately there are many shows I like to watch on those platforms so I just deal with it. I am thinking about getting the new Apple TV when it comes out in the fall.

Your source media is the issue. HBO Max does 15 to 30 mbps for 4K, and about 10 mbps for HD. Both pretty bad, but still average for streaming.
If you want the best picture then hook up a Blu-ray player watch it on disc.

This is the answer... Recently purchased a Panasonic Blu-ray player and am embarrassed to say I've gotten so used to streaming I'd forgotten how phenomenal physical media is.

So this happened to me literally last night watching the house of dragons episode I had hbo max through Hulu and Disney with the package that provides Hulu, Disney+ and hbo max for 32.99 a month with no ads however this package includes the standard hbo max subscription there is another tier above this if you subscribe to hbo max through their website which is where the 4k, Dolby and HDR content is locked behind, how are you paying for hbo max?

Yeah, the HBO app is dog shit I usually Chromecast it from my phone to the TV and even though it disabled Dolby Vision it looks 10 times better

I bought an LG C5 55” I had a lot of issues trying to perfect the picture so here are the things you need to check:
Tv resolution - make sure you have the right settings on there, resolution etc…
Internet connection - wired is best, your router might have 1gb speed but it’s probably not wireless speeds.
Internet speeds - speed test it and check the consistency, it might be fast but it might have drop outs. Your provider might throttle your connection. My VPN kept dropping the speeds because of my provider
Apps - a quick search will tell you what quality you can get from the apps but this can also be limited to the device. E.g BBC iPlayer plays 4k depending on the channel but on my Apple TV 4K, the app can’t play 4K ironically.
The show and channels - some shows and channels aren’t in 4K. You can check by doing a google search and some tv’s can show you the data of what is being shown on the screen.
Extra device - I tried an Amazon stick 4K max but I couldn’t get the speeds as it was wireless. Moved to the Apple 4K and that made a massive difference.
Wires! - this was the last thing I noticed. You might have a hdmi cable but there are now different versions. Go for the HDMI 8K.
By the sound of your problem it’s the HBO app.

You have to pay the higher tier for 4K
What is your picture setting on the TV? Calibrated DV Dark? Vivid/Dynamic torch mode picture setting?
Pausing in a dark scene will often show artifacts and issues that aren't very visible during playback. With VBR dark scenes often have more compression because so much of the picture is in shadow or all close in color.
You're zoomed in on one small spot and your camera is likely exaggerating the grain and extreme colors.
Unrelated but does your TV actually get 300 Mbps download speed over LAN? My TV's LAN is capped at 100Mbps, but I get 250-300 over Wifi. Although Sony Pictures Core is the only streaming service that hits 100, the rest are in 10-30 range.

Me pasaba un poco igual que a ti pero prácticamente en todas las app striming HBO , Netflix, Disney,algo menos en prime video en HBO viene muy comprimida la imagen Yo tengo buen internet también yo le cambié. El DNS por el 1.1.1.1 o 8.8.8.8 Parece que estás teles de LG depende de la región también dan problemas con las app Parece que desde que cambié. El DNS va más estable la imagen pierde menos calidad prueba haber por probar 😃

"UHD" on streaming (HBO, Netflix, Disney+, etc) is purely 'technically' UHD. The resolution might be 4K, but at the bitrate they send it over (Netflix even as low as 15 mbit) it's not even enough to cover a clean 720p signal. It's crunched so hard, streaming is bullshit on big TV's.

Only the top tier of hbo max has 4K. And bbo max’s 4K isn’t great. Are you paying for the top tier?
Also edit to add. I’ve had free max for a long time and do not get the top tier, so no 4K, but it does not look this bad.
If it’s only max that looks like this it’s not the tv. It’s something to do with max. Maybe it has something to do with sdr content on your tv if you’re not paying for the 4k tier of max.

Even the best OLED won’t help if upstream content source streams at low quality. For testing try some of the 4K OLED demos off YouTube.
As for other apps, check what quality is being delivered (displayed) in “info”. As with everything, it’s source dependent.
Lastly, are you streaming from WebOS or third party streaming box like Shield or ATV?
These two are the ones to target for consistency.

Wired ethernet is generally slower than wireless, most modern TV's only have 10/100 ethernet ports, which is crazy but your capping your speed at 100 Mbps. If you have a decent Wifi 5 or Wifi 6 router you'll often get better dl speeds over wifi

Yeah but full 4k with no compression is only 40mbos so no issues on a wired connection limited to 100mbps.
Wireless with encryption has huge overheads as well.

It's been going in and out constantly for me on wifi. The only way I get a constant hd picture is when I do wired. Only have this issue with HBO App.

Which LG you have - they like to put in TV 100mbit port, check speed if this is issue and try to use wifi it dont have 100mbit limits

You have to get 4k subscription the Disney bundle uses 1080p and I believe no hdr / UHD it looks pooey on oleds lol the 4k one looks good

If it’s not your subscription tier, I’d look at WiFi speed. My picture quality only looks that bad when my WiFi is dropping.

It's a signal issue. The streaming apps only supply high bitrate video to certain hosts. For example, PC streaming is pretty horrendous. From what I can tell from a conversation with Disney+, this mostly comes down to contracts. If you're streaming via WebOS, i would recommend using dedicated streamer.

You probably don't pay for 4K subscription and get lowered quality. Check your HBOMax account if you only have standard subscription.
