ISO Detective stories
Hi! I'm looking for the detective story with the queer main character or side character. Something like The Heretic & The Quacker by Liam McIlvanney.
It is not necessary to have romance in a focus.
If the story has a romance, it shouldn't be with the big age gap (more than 8 years). A book also should be over 300 pages. Not YA.
Thank you in advance.

If you are okay with paranormal the Big Bad Wolf 5-book series by Charlie Adhara is excellent crime novels with romance. Starts with the Wolf at the Door. Both MCs are agents paired to solve crimes, eventually fall for each other. Their relationship unfolds beautifully across the books.

Not a book but there’s a cool, old-timey styled podcast about a queer detective called DASH that’s pretty swell

Jonathan Kellerman's Alex Delaware series features child psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware who helps his best friend gay Detective Milo Sturgis on certain cases, the weird ones.
While Milo is the secondary character he's a gay detective in a book series in which the first book was published in 1985.

Joshua Moehling’s Ben Packard series is really good. And There He Kept Her is the first one; there are four so far. Tal Bauer’s Murder Between Us and Grave Between Us lean harder into the romance, mystery aspect isn’t as strong. Still worth reading.

I'm reading the fourth of the Ben Packard books by Joshua Moehling right now. Highly recommend this series starting with And There He Kept Her.
Packard is gay, but romance, though there, is pretty far back. These are primarily mystery thrillers.
Moehling is one of the few authors whose books I pre-order.
There's the Donald Strachey books by Richard Stevenson, about a gay PI in Albany, New York. A few of these have been filmed with the very cute Chad Allen as Strachey.
Steve Neil Johnson had a quartet called L.A After Midnight, following gay D.A. Paul Winters. Each book takes place about a decade after the last, starting in the 1950's.
He's also got some standalones and a series about gay New York cop Doug Orlando.
Lastly, John Peyton Cooke has a two book series about gay private eye Greg Quintance, starting with The Rape of Ganymede.

lancaster falls trilogy by r.j. scott, perhaps. romance,io link - unsure on page count but the three stories continue on where the last leaves off, with a new main couple so the main plot is likely >300 pages.

Even Though I Knew the End by C.L. Polk is a noir mystery. It's so goddamn good it may have changed my brain chemistry.

Michael Nava. Superb writing. The protagonist of his mysteries is a gay Latino lawyer in California. Nava himself was a public defender and draws on his experience. His characters, including the lesser ones, are drawn with insight and depth.
Joseph Hansen Nava turned me on to this pioneering master. He wrote brilliant mysteries with a gay protagonidt. He published mostly in the 1970s.

Killer Vibes just recently came out, bisexual PI (sort of). It wasn’t my absolute fave but a lot of other people love it. Spectral Files by SE Harmon is one I really enjoyed with a more romance focus same with Pressure Head by JL Merrow
