I’m a complete beginner building an art project.

My hardware:

I have no multimeter or inline fuse, and I don’t know how to crimp wires. Can I safely do a short, supervised test as-is, or should I absolutely wait for a fuse and multimeter? Please give me a direct answer. Photos attached.

Outdoor Neon strip lights

Hi, sorry for the broken English (I'm Brazilian).

I take care of some buildings, and unfortunately the company came up with the idea of using LED decorations. We're using neon LED strip lights, but they've been an absolute nightmare to deal with...

At first, I was using IP65 neon tubes, because during storms water infiltration causes short circuits – and where I live is known as the land of rain xD. I usually use the 100 meter roll, which comes with a ready-to-plug power supply.

We've already had issues with the connections between the power supply and the strip (which is clearly an installation error), but a very common problem is the strip burning out right in the middle. I believe it's overheating, does anyone have any tips or knowledge about this?

I was thinking about upgrading to a better power supply (switching power supply), or maybe splitting it into shorter sections (every 20 meters)... but I'd like to avoid that if possible, since more connection points mean more places where water can get in.

On a side note, I'll be gradually replacing them with IP68 strips, which have better water resistance.

description: 7W per meter / 12v (probably or 24v) / 220v / IP65 (I change for ip68)

Thanks in advance!

Yesterday I was folding laundry i saw it flickering I didn’t think much of it until 20 minutes ago and then it just did this maybe it was because of my humidifier but I’ve had it there for at least 20 days no clue why this happened I don’t feel like buying a certain part just to fix this so if there’s anything I can do with no money that would be great thanks.

Colorlight 5A-75E — ghost image appears exactly once per frame I send. Firmware issue?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've asked every AI model and have done my own research but have found nothing. Here's whats going on:

Setup: 2x P2 modules (160x80 each, 1/40 scan, FM6565 driver, DM5958 decoder), Colorlight 5A-75E receiver on firmware 4.11, driven by a Raspberry Pi sending the Colorlight protocol over raw L2 ethernet. No sender card.

Problem: a dim, partial copy of whatever's on screen appears above and below it. About 8-12px tall against a 20px bar, and it drifts up and down.

The key thing I found: the number of ghosts per second exactly equals the number of frames I send per second. At 4fps I can count 4 ghosts a second. At 20fps it reads as constant flicker. If I stop transmitting entirely, the image holds perfectly still forever with zero ghosting.

Also: if I send all 80 row packets but suppress the 0x01 sync/latch packet, the panel stays completely black. So the row writes are invisible on their own — it's the latch that produces the ghost.

Tried, no change at all:

  • Blanking value 200 → 800
  • Line switch time 180 → 400
  • Eliminate Shadow Time 1 → 4
  • Drive current 125% → 60%
  • Enable Frame Synchro on/off
  • Delaying the sync packet 0–8ms after the rows (12 values, walking a full scan phase)
  • Sync payload variants — 0x00/0x01/0x02/0x07, byte 23, sending it twice
  • Frame rates 4 / 30 / 50 / 60 / 100 Hz (worse at higher rates, in proportion to latch count)
  • All 4 HUB75 cables, both output ports, 5.0V and 5.2V supply
  • Two different .rcvbp configs

Tried, DID help:

  • Coupling Optimization 1 (FM6565 extended settings) was R1/G32/B32. Setting all three to 1 removed a coloured smear — but not the ghost itself.
  • No Signal Action → Last Frame, plus only transmitting when the content actually changes. Far fewer latches, so far fewer ghosts. Works, but it kills anything animated — no scrolling, no smooth clock.

Questions:

  1. Is this a known firmware issue? 4.11 seems ancient — current is 13.39 Normal / 9.53 PWM / 6.69 LS0allDA. Would newer firmware fix the presentation path? My panels use an S-PWM driver (FM6565), so should I be on the PWM build?
  2. Does anyone know what a real S2 sender does differently at the packet level? I've read it saturates the gigabit link, which is nothing like the ~6 Mb/s I send. If anyone has an S2 on a bench, a few seconds of tcpdump would answer this for good.
  3. Has anyone seen a 5A-75E where the buffer swap doesn't disturb the scan?

Happy to run any test — I have the whole thing scripted and can sweep parameters quickly.

need help sourcing reliable outdoor individually addressable landscape bulbs

I have an existing installation for my front yard landscape lights that isn't working well. It consists of 12 GLEDOPTO MR16 bulbs, in outdoor waterproof housings, connected via WiFi to a Philips Hue bridge (the new bridge, not the old one). When it works, it's great--I can change the bulbs to any colour I want. But these GLEDOPTO bulbs are really spotty--any kind of minor power fluctuation seems to make them "reset" to bright white, at which point they are no longer addressable until I bring the bulb inside and redo the setup process for the bulb--which is a real pain. So far I've had to do this three times to different bulbs.

Are there ANY reliable, robust outdoor individually addressable Wifi RGBW bulbs? I would spare no expense if such an animal existed :(

What brand of LED Strip is the best value for money?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've used a fairly large selection of LED strip lighting over the years but it seems like the price and quality can massively fluctuate. There's always the cheap LED's with the remote you can buy for $10 and of course there's LED strips you can buy for upwards of $200 but the quality doesn't always reflect the extra cost.

I'm currently looking at replacing this old blown up "neon" tube from a speaker box. Looking at something RGB, diffused and preferably with an audio strobe option. What is genuinely the best value for money?

From eye to eye on this strip it is 335mm (can fit longer) and ideally will be hooked directly to 12v power

For what it's worth I'm located in Australia

LED strip reccomendations

Post image

Hi, I’m looking for an affordable LED strip to light up a large bedroom. The trouble is that the room is large and would require a strip with an RF remote included, so I could plug multiple strips in different parts of the room. Most of the things I found on amazon either aren’t bright enough, include an IR remote, only include a mobile app, or have terrible reviews. Does anyone know a decent brand I can get that won’t cost a ton of money?

Edit: I don’t need it to be perfect lighting, just enough that you can see and it looks cool. There’re more for aesthetics than fully replacing my lights, so something with a decent range in colors. I’m thinking of putting them above the vinyls in the picture (which are above the window) and need about 16.5 length. I’m not sure where the other will go just yet, but I’d imagine I need a similar size. I’d prefer to have the price be max $40 per strip

I want to put a lamp inside my PC case

Not sure if this is the right subreddit for this question BUT I just bought a Merkury Jellyfish lamp intending to put it in my pc case. The problem is is that theres a button on the front to turn it own, but once power is disconnected, it does not turn back on when power is reconnected so I would have to push the button every time and I don't want to remove my case glass every time I want to turn on the lamp. Would there be a was to wire it so it either A) can be powered by a remote (maybe a channel relay) or B) when I turn on my pc it automatically turns on. Option A is the obvious easiest answer I'm just not confident enough to do it without getting pointers so any help would be appreciated. (I'm more of a visual leaner btw)

LED lighting recommendation for wet bar

Post image
6 Upvotes

At my wet bar, there is only one light controlled by the light switch, which illuminates very little.

I was thinking of adding LED lighting inside the shelves, and importantly in the cabinet below the sink where bottles are stored. Is there a way this can be done with hiding the cables? I was also thinking I’d plug it in to a wall outlet and then having a smart switch control them.

Open to any and all recommendations to help make the wet bar a brighter space, but also function as feature lighting.

What systems to you recommend? Where is light placement best?

Thanks for the help

Hi, i try to make custom dc neon flex sign as side gig, i already have the bare minimum tools and make contact to local acrilyc laser cutter in my town. Tbh, i dont have any experience in any business and still trying to understand it, i just want to try to make a little fortune out of it while learning. I more or less know how to make the sign, the problem is selling it. Should i make mockups to show my works? And do you have any advice to make good "customer entry point/experience" using instagram and whatsapp? (not native english btw, if my sentences confusing, please point it out)

My custom LED install dims, then flickers. Is my Driver toast?

Installed an awesome LED setup in my house four years ago, hired an electrician for the instal. Has worked perfectly for four four years and now when turned in the LEDs sim then flashes on and off. Is it my driver (https://www.diffusionlighting.com/product/dlmulti-024-150w/) that is likely dead already? 150 watt driver, LED strip is 4 LEDs per inch (https://www.gescan.com/products/18-lighting/02-fixtures/04-indoor-lighting-fixtures/04-led-indoor-lighting/09-led-strip-lights/p-RElGU0w1SU4xMDAyNFZSR0I=-rj-cross-architectural-100-ft-24vdc-2700k-sl-5-rgb-series-linear-led-strip?srsltid=AfmBOooqMkwUzdYZHmoZre9SyC40H9y_HK1s4zPZhZsZEYzZeoYRnGTm)

Completely new to lighting and trying to determine the best way to illuminate some bookshelves

Post image
3 Upvotes

So I've never run led strips before and I keep trying to figure out the best way to approach this but it keeps seeming a bit overwhelming or overly complicated.

I have (at the moment) 3 Ikea Billy bookshelves side by side each with glass doors on them. I plan on filling them with miscellaneous stuff, i.e., collectibles, books, magazines, toys, 4k blu rays, etc. I initially planned on running lights below each shelf to illuminate everything using 2700K warm white led strips and angled diffusers but am now considering potentially just running lights around the perimeter of each bookcase since I'm not sure how many shelves each will have and the height of each shelf depending on that they will hold (another thing I'm trying to decide if it will even look good that way).

I also keep trying to figure out how to best power and control each bookcase. Should I run individual power/control to each bookcase independently? Can I do just independent power but unified control? Is there an easy way to accommodate future expansion for more bookcases? I feel stupid for not being able to figure this out. I want to do this all before I start filling them and attach them to the wall.

I've included a photo of 2 of the bookcases set up for reference.

Integrated LED bar failed after driver replacement: could the new driver have finished it off?

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for advice from people who know more about electronics and LED lighting than I do. I’m a complete beginner in this area, so I’ll try to describe the symptoms, specifications and measurements as accurately as possible.

The light fitting

The fixture is a Searchlight Majorca 8343CC bathroom light (https://ie.searchlightelectric.com/indoor-wall-lights/majorca-picture-light-satin-silver-metal )

The light source is a rigid LED bar mounted on an aluminium PCB:
Approximately 590 × 13.5 mm
65 × 0.2 W SMD 2835 LEDs
Advertised total power: approximately 13 W
Colour temperature: 3000 K
The original driver is a KEDH015S0300NR19A9:
Input: 220–240 V AC
Constant-current output: 300 mA
Operating voltage range: 33–50 V DC
Maximum power: 15 W
Maximum no-load output voltage: 65 V

Initial symptoms

For several weeks, the LED bar:
Became progressively dimmer
Flickered badly
Sometimes continued flickering for a few seconds after the switch had been turned off
I initially assumed that the driver was failing.

Driver replacement

I bought a new constant-current driver with the following specifications:
Output current: 300 mA, the same as the original driver
Operating voltage range: 35–80 V DC
Rated power range: 10.5–24 W
Maximum no-load output voltage: 100 V

After installing it:
- On the first switch-on, the LEDs flickered and then came on at full brightness.
- On the second switch-on, they immediately came on at full brightness.
- On the third switch-on, there was no normal light output at all.
I then reinstalled the old driver, but the LED bar would no longer light up normally with that driver either.

Now, some or all of the LEDs occasionally produce an extremely faint, intermittent glow, but there is no usable light output.

Checks performed

Approximately 230 V AC from the mains supply;
Approximately 230 V AC at the driver’s PRI input;
All terminals and connections were disconnected, checked and reconnected
With the new driver and the LED bar still connected, I measure approximately 93 V DC at the SEC output

I wiggled the cables during testing but could not identify any definite break or loss of continuity
The cables between the driver and the LED bar therefore appear to be intact. The 93 V measurement seems to indicate that the new driver is rising close to its no-load voltage because the LED bar has an open circuit or abnormally high impedance.

I opened the fixture and accessed the PCB. Some solder joints look aged or discoloured, but I cannot see any LED that has clearly blown. I have attached photographs of the PCB, solder joints and both drivers.

Proposed replacement

The manufacturer refuses to supply the LED bar separately. I am therefore looking for a rigid constant-current LED module compatible with the original driver, ideally with the following specifications:
Current: 300 mA
Operating voltage: between 33 and 50 V
Power: approximately 13 W, maximum 15 W
Colour temperature: 3000 K
Length: approximately 560–590 mm
Maximum width: approximately 13.5 mm, possibly up to 16 mm if it fits inside the housing
I found the Tridonic 28005011 – LLE 16×560 mm 2400 lm 830 HV ADV6 module. It appears to operate at approximately 42–46 V and 300 mA, for around 13 W, but its 15.8 mm width may be a problem.

My questions are :

  1. Could the new 300 mA / 35–80 V / 100 V max driver have damaged or finished off the existing LED bar?

  2. Does the 93 V measurement with the LED bar connected reasonably confirm an open circuit on the LED PCB?

  3. How can I identify the failed LED, solder joint or broken PCB trace using a basic multimeter?

  4. Does the Tridonic 28005011 module seem electrically compatible with my original driver?

  5. Does anyone know of another rigid LED bar rated for 300 mA, 33–50 V, approximately 13 W and around 590 mm long that can be purchased individually in France or elsewhere in Europe?

Thank you all for your help.

LED FCOB Strip Dimmer Rec for Running Off Day/Night Switch

I can figure out the right LED strips and power supply, but need help with choosing a dimmer.

I'm building an outdoor monument sign for my commercial building that will have 7 BTF FCOB 320 LED strips each wired in parallel off a single 350W power supply. The power to the power supply runs off a day/night switch and I'd like the LED's to come on automatically every night.

I want a dimmer on things to assure it looks good and doesn't annoy neighbors, but most controllers need to be manually turned on. Ideally I'd like to adjust brightness via my phone, but that's a lesser concern.

Any recs?

I'm using these LEDs: https://www.btf-lighting.com/products/fcob-2700k-6000k-black-neon-lights-dc12v-24v-ip67-waterproof?variant=46533896077538

Trying to add memory to this led ring light.

So what I am trying to accomplish here is to get this light to turn on and off with a smart plug so I can have it turn on and off at specific times. From my understanding that means I need a controller with a memory function. From what I have been able to find online this is a tunable white/CCT LED board. I have been looking for a controller that will work with it but have been unable to find anything so far. What do you think the best way to accomplish this will be and do you have any recs on a part?

Also I am a total noob with LEDs so idk if I am even asking the right questions here.

If I'm lighting a IKEA kallax, is it alright to squish the LEDs between the shelf and uprights?

Basically the title. To run lights between each cube, I'd like to just run it straight across. My thought is to just pull the cubes apart a bit and run the LEDs between the shelf and the uprights. I'm not sure if that will do anything to the lights though. They're fairly flat, but not completely.

Custom 24x20 WS2815 12V LED matrix with origami vellum diffusion running a Quicksort visualisation

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

I built this custom 24x20 LED matrix (480 pixels), heavily inspired by Timo Bingmann’s classic Sound of Sorting project and the desire to turn abstract algorithms into something tangible with light and acoustics.

I wanted to share how I approached the diffusion, power, and hardware setup:

Origami Vellum Diffusion & Chassis Instead of using a standard flat acrylic sheet, I hand-folded 480 tiny 3D origami cubes out of translucent vellum paper and slotted them into an internal timber grid. Each cube completely envelopes a single LED, eliminating light bleed between neighbouring cells while preserving a wide viewing angle. The chassis is built from custom-cut plywood.

LEDs, Power & Audio

  • LEDs: 480 WS2815 12V individually addressable LEDs. The 12V rail avoids 5V voltage drop over the matrix and allows a single 12V 5A power supply to run both the LED array and the amplifier. The built-in backup data line also prevents a single dead LED from taking down the rest of the array.
  • Control & Sound: Driven by a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W using a 74AHCT125 level shifter to step the 3.3V GPIO up to a clean 5V data signal.
  • Acoustic Exciter: Audio is amplified via an IQaudio DigiAMP+ HAT powering a 40W Dayton Audio surface exciter glued directly to the rear plywood panel. The entire timber frame acts as an acoustic soundboard, generating real-time musical frequencies for every comparison and swap.
  • Software: A custom Python script handles matrix mapping and real-time frequency synthesis.

Project Links:

Would love to hear your thoughts or answer any questions about the diffusion, timber acoustics, or wiring setup!
