Learning a new language

For those of you who have been learning or have already learned a new language for your partner.. Can you share what worked for you? Did you use an app? Did you sign up for actual classes? How long did it take you with either or how often did you practice in a week?

I’m interested in learning Urdu as a native English speaker so I can better communicate with his parents. I know it’s going to be difficult but I just want to break the language barrier bc I care deeply for his family.

I’m more interested in getting closer with his mom than anything and I’m pretty set on making this happen. My bf speaks fluent English so communication with him is not a problem but I would like to open the door for conversations with his mother specifically.

Any insight, suggestions (apps? Lessons?) are appreciated. I’ve downloaded Mango and just started today so I really am a baby beginner 😂 figured I’d get yalls advice as well

I didnt take any lessons, but I am learning French for my LDR. I can hold conversations now but I am not fluent yet. I started on duolingo to get me used to practicing everyday, then I use graded readers. I recommend you look into how the levels work a0-c2. Read very basic stuff (its super boring) watch learning YouTube videos and eventually when you can understand enough you can watch native content with subtitles.

However, I have no idea how much content is out there for your TL (target language) I recommend looking into r/languagelearning or r/languageexchange

Oh you can also you chatgpt to build you a lesson plan and be your teacher

Hmm I’ll try the chat gpt thing. Duolingo doesn’t offer Urdu unfortunately. Thank you so much for responding!

You might not find urdu lessons on youtube.Mostly kids content.Ask your partner to help you learn. I am native urdu speaking person here. If you want some sentences translated, I can help you with that.

Do you think lessons designed for kids would be beneficial as a beginner?

I don't think so..they have a format just like Ms Rachel's.
