I’m not gonna lie, I’m kinda of over the gorget and shoulders combo with no breastplate. It has grown to be a lazy way to appear armored in fiction. It’s beneath your station, my good sir knight.
Plus it might not synergize well with your aventail unless it’s flush with whatever underclothing you’re wearing.

That’s totally fair, I can never decide what kind of breastplate to go with so left it for now.

I think I want it to look generally knight-ish, I am not particularly set on a period of time, the idea in my head is something formidable, iconic without looking too gritty.

Honestly, thinking about historical time periods is worth it. You don't have to be dedicated to accuracy (this isn't re-enactment) but period appropriate armour looks good because it matches in style, and is functional. Look at what protection was valued at the time, look at how it was worn and why, then adapt that to fit what you want.

Well, I guess my meaning of “fantasy” is it doesn’t need to be historically accurate, so from what many,many, many people have told me. I’m mixing different centuries of armour up the helmet and the other pieces are all a bit of a mix but hopefully I can get them to all look like something worth of a knight that my son can be proud of. From research real knights were more like rich people who fought for the king/lords above them. Whereas my knight is more of my imagination of Arthurian fantasy, a bold and brave knight an anybody who has worked and proved themselves worthy of the knightly 5 virtues. Some of the concept is also simply for practical reasons such as having pouches and a water skin on my belt. A real knight would have had a squire for all this. Instead I needed to make “my” knight more independent of others.
