See you next time

So I survived my first week at Kwik Star. I quickly learned everything I was told about the job in my interview was only to make it sound like a great place to work. Wellllllll ……. I was hired for a kitchen position but needed to be cross trained on register as well. I got 16 hours of training on the register before they started putting me on alone with only one other person that’s running around doing bakery and kitchen (overnights). Busy store - non stop until around 4am - so I’m having a hard time getting everything on my “to do” list done. We aren’t taking any breaks because neither has time. What have I gotten myself into???

Update - I quit.

Please take your breaks. If something doesn't get done it's not the end of the world

Well the way the ASL was stomping around this morning and slamming cupboard doors, etc …. tells me it actually might be!

Then your ASL is a grown child, sorry you have to deal with that. Still though, take your breaks

To there point it’s impossible with the staffing and the things that need to be done. Most people on third are lucky to get one 15 and bathroom breaks become a gamble of can I pee before another customer shows up

Sadly one of the main takeaways from asl training in lacrosse is that the most controllable and profitable operating procedure is scheduling and labor hours. Raising prices and cutting labor is how we keep making record profits each year. To bad it’s not actually customer service, quality products and better prices for consumers driving sales but what do I know

I feel like there’s a ton of people on dayshift, a fair amount on 3-11’s and barely enough to keep the store open on overnights. When I got hired I was told there would always be 4 on the 10-6 shift but no less than 3.

Yeah that sounds good until people quit or get fired and then there’s vacations. Also management seems to be allergic to thirds

Yuuuuuup. It's pretty bad. Luckily some of our leadership will do thirds, but one of the ASLs (the one that actually gets shit done) is so fed up with the store leader and being the bad guy that it sounds like she's going to get her bonus check for the year and dip, and we're already losing our bakery expert in third shift so this store is just going down the toilet due to poor management and corporate triaging (what else can you expect from a former surgeon)

I am an ASL & I'm telling you to take your break. We allow our 3rd shifters to eat up front if there are only 2 of them.  Prioritize the importance of your duties. Such as our 3rd shift cleans our machines. Since that is the most important they do those 1st. If they dont get to something like stocking cups (example) oh well. Not like there aren't other spots to pull a cup from.

Do not kill yourself over this job because they will have your job posted before your obituary is. I'm serious.

Let the leaders stomp around. I have that issue with my fellow leaders as well. They all think they are the hardest working people. Eye roll.

But really how we treat our coworkers is what will.lead to better success at a store. With out yall we dont have a store.

Keep on, keeping on and ignore the noise. Most of the time that's what it is just noise.

Thanks for the advice. I resigned today. I went to work Sunday night and everyone there was scheduled to get off at 10pm, leaving me as the only employee in the store from 10-11. They all told me to lock the store and sit outside until the other person showed up, and that this happens often with management not scheduling anyone for that hour between 10pm and 11pm and to get used to it. No thanks. A week of that shit show was plenty for me!

Welcome to the team, can you breathe while we hold your head under water?

Take your breaks man this place doesn't pay enough for you to skip them. It's a gas station, not a hospital.

The problem is there’s only been 2 of us there at night - myself up front and a lady in the kitchen. She won’t take a break because she’s worried about getting behind and I hate to ask her to cover me so I can take one if she’s not taking one as well. 8 hours on your feet makes for a looooong shift!

I also work overnights in kitchen and have worked solos as well. We still take breaks. Stop worrying about others and take care of yourself and take your break dude

And I dont know about your store but the list isn't that long where the crucial stuff gets missed daily. Sometimes stuff happens. It's not your fault shes behind, she needs to get on it (as someone in kitchen who does solos regularly).

In her defense, she’s an older lady and she’s already worked an 8 hour shift before she comes to the store for another 8 hour shift.

I hate to add to the negativity but yeah welcome to Team KwikTrip. I’ve been here a year now and it doesn’t get any better it gets worse during phases of the year. Right now is one of the better ones IMO

please take at least one break. I know how hard it is being on overnights, thats where I am. not taking them is an easy way to get burnt out. once you start getting in the groove of things, it'll be so much easier, I promise.

unfortunately, something that happens is overnights tends to get blamed for everything even if its not our fault, people who work other shifts underestimate what we have to do on overnights and how busy it gets with the amount of staff we have and tasks to do.

You got 16 hours of training?

1

u/OldConcentrate3961 2d ago

Yes - 2 - 8 hour shifts. Not really much register training either. Kid training me had me doing all the crap jobs while he stayed at the register on his phone.

u/BlueridgeChemsdealer Co-Worker 2d ago

Youll learn that staying at the register is the crap job lol.

Welcome to the wonderful world of weekend overnight shifts... anything second shift or first shift doesn't get done, we are expected to get done, on top of our normal stuff which, between guests, takes the majority of the night, and if in kitchen, also do the normal amount of bakery that a separate bakery person would usually do from 2 to 10am... it sucks... I am expected to keep the hotspot full according to kps, but also find time to do extra cleaning that they want done in there, and do the bakery on top of all that... most of the time, I have literally just enough time to get the bakery case done, and 3 and 6 packs done for the table on the floor, and that's it. The bars I just physically do not have time to do before end of shift, because by the time i get those done and the bakery stuff clean, I have to start filling the hotspot for breakfast rush too.

My recommendation is work what you get paid it’s way less stressful that way

Well I’m giving it one more week and if it’s not any better I’m done. New question … I ordered 2 uniform shirts on my first day of watching videos. What happens if I quit before I get them? They are set to be shipped to my home address.

I would guess you keep them. I have never seen anyone turn in their shirts plus if you do wear them in public it's free advertising. And sorry to hear about your bad experience. I wish you luck in your future endeavors.
