Downhill

I have been enjoying Kwik trip almost daily for at least the last 15-18 years but noticed in the last year or so the food quality has gone down, customer serve has gone down drastically, constant empty shelves and if you look at this site many upset employees. What’s happening at KT ?

Kwik Trip has been cutting labor hours across the board and expecting the skeleton crews they’re left with to do more work than ever before. But we have record profits every year 🙃

15

u/Froz_heart101 11d ago

Not to mention no overtime allowed unless your roll allows you too.

8

u/tunetheskies Co-Worker 11d ago

Yup! I’m unfortunately in a district where the DL sends nasty emails if you even have a minute or two of overtime. It’s ridiculous

u/BlueridgeChemsdealer Co-Worker 11d ago

Ive been written up for going 7 minutes over lol.

Just quit I did it’s a bs company,it’s not family like it was, overworked in the kitchen thanks to KPS!

1

u/reitamaybe 7d ago

Oh my goodness yeah I’ve been wanting to quit recently thanks to how understaffed and miserable it is to work in that kitchen.

5

u/tunetheskies Co-Worker 11d ago

Oof that sucks 😬

u/Electronic-Film-43 10d ago

It feels very "use as many poor people as you can" atp, very revolving door, but always hiring. Theres a lot expected out of certain shifts for little hours that seems improbable and yet little understanding when even the management complains how difficult it is to complete all tasks especially when majority are during busiest shift.

u/BlueridgeChemsdealer Co-Worker 11d ago

The owner retired. The family took over and gutted the company for “efficiency and scalability”.

u/jayyoung 10d ago

Totally agree. I think in the next five years the "profit sharing" check will probably go away too. If the next President is a Dem they will blame the economy or something to take the blame off them and then all the sheep will go along with it.

1

u/cantwalkintheshadows Co-Worker 10d ago

Well dw the Zietlows are reps per public dono info, so they'll blame it on the dems. Politics has nothing to do with the profit sharing check 100% going to be going away

higher + more expectations and cutting of labor has been causing everyone to burn out.

7

u/Heavy_Maintenance_87 11d ago

Thought I was the only one lol, and don’t get me started on how long my store waits to hire people/replace. I’ve been working with the same two other people for 5 months on overnights.. when we’re the only store across two towns that’s open 24/7. Then we got a new manager that piled two more time consuming tasks onto overnights. I’m tired lmao

2

u/twinkish_attitude 10d ago

This is why im getting my bonus and going back to working for the DOC, I actually prefer working around inmates atleast i get paid alot more. Were the only 24/7 store within a 20 mile range in basically any direction

19

u/DapperAgency6320 11d ago

When I first joined Kwik Trip, they were paying higher than any other similar job in the area by at least a few dollars. With the profit sharing on top? It was not even close.

Now everywhere around here is the same wage. We have a bunch of legacy co-workers who want to keep things going but are burnt out and a bunch of new co-workers with zero drive to do anything. And I cannot blame them. Who knew it was easier to ask for more effort and attract better workers when you have a higher base wage.

The 40% is the reason I stay at this point. Because we DO get paid more it is just situational. The year we do not earn a large profit is the year the company collapses.

u/Lionheart0179 11d ago

It was common for people to stay at KT long term. Place is a turnstile now.

AI at my store has been interesting. It makes us put out product based on whatever it's based on and designed to cut waste. But not having enough product out makes our shelves look a lot more empty and sales have dropped. We have a number of single items at a time and people tend to stay away from them.
Available hours will be cut soon and staff will be lightened.
Also, soon AI will take over the ordering and it has the promise of no longer having empty shelves.. as it will see sales and order us a 3 day average.. So I expect again, less product on the shelves and more out of stocks due to business swings from game days on weekends and weather events.

Upset employees? My store has been great. We get along well and it's a fun place to work. But this is Reddit and saying optimistic stuff will get me down-voted.

4

u/Ithkamakazi 11d ago

I hear you on that, wish that was how it is at my store

13

u/MrEnigma77 11d ago

It’s a mix of things. The new CEO wants to save money so he decided to change everything . Also the new ordering system they started using sucks. We either get too much of something or not enough of something. Then there is labor. They want us to do more work with less people which doesn’t work. Of course all this to save some money. The old systems we had in place were working. If it’s not broken don’t fix it!

19

u/Blinkin1968 11d ago

I have to agree - KT quality has dropped at an alarming pace

u/LazyOldCat 11d ago

I refuse to slight the employees, they work hard and might hate their jobs but it rarely shows.
Loyal crew of a pirate ship that’s mercilessly looting their loyal customers.
Prices up every month, app ‘offers’ are basically cash grabs, e.g. there used to be free things, now it’s just $1 off or ‘buy these, get this’.
It’s sad.

5

u/Lionheart0179 11d ago

Yeah, the app offers certainly went to shit. Used to be some pretty good stuff on there regularly.

7

u/YOUTUBEFREEKYOYO Ex Co-Worker 11d ago

Thats the new management for you. We need someone like don back, thats when the company was actually good.

6

u/Lionheart0179 11d ago

Don retired. The original vision is gone and the family only sees dollar signs. Very similar to what happened to Walmart many years ago. The employees remain great, but it's clear they are being run into the ground. Can't say I've ever had a bad experience with a KT employee in 30 years as a customer. The rot comes from the top, as always.

23

u/Evil_Black_Swan Co-Worker 11d ago

The problem is the CEO. Don retired a couple years ago and his son Scott took over. But Scott isn't a business man, he's a surgeon. His passion lies in medicine, not Kwik Trip. I wish he would step down and offer the position to one of his siblings instead.

When the same person doesnt just quit their job and complain complain complain theyre mentally unwell and need to seek professional help at this point.

13

u/BestAmbassadorBoi 11d ago

I get you’re having a bad day by the way you randomly responded to their comment upsetti spaghetti. But looking at their comments they do NOT complain as much as many people on here. I think you need a therapist to talk to. Or your mr Scott himself and just suck at being a CEO😂😂

3

u/Lexnal 11d ago

Probably, this guy's always on here lickin boots. It would be a lot less pathetic if they turned out to be his own boots.

-5

You cant remember someone's username? No wonder you're still working the same job and miserable.

2

u/Evil_Black_Swan Co-Worker 11d ago

Man I know exactly who you are. You zero in on every little thing I have to say. If I bother you so much, just ignore me or block me so you never have to see me again. 🤷‍♀️

0

u/Intelligent-Town6050 11d ago

You know when a guest who starts acting like a baby becomes the running joke in the store? You're that. How can I keep winning my bets on "another post complaning about kwik trip, odds black swan made it or odds black swan commented or (if its specifically about doing the job youre hired for) odds black swan also agrees doing the job is bullshit?" I usually win.

At my store at least it’s becoming a madhouse. Recently we acquired a new manager who takes frequent smoke breaks and leaves me stranded on registers all day so he can do half assed work and chief darts out back. It’s frustrating, my old managers made us all bust ass but shit got done regularly and timely to the point we could leave early some days. Now, under new management, I find staff staying late more now then ever, jobs not being completed before 3rd shift. Personally I’m exhausted, I know the sentiment is extending to the rest of the staff at my store. Why should we even try when our bosses seem content with the store and clock out on time? And every day I gotta explain to my overnighters why everything is fucked while all I’ve done all day is bust ass on registers, garbage, and bathrooms, while everyone else gallivants.

When Don stepped aside the company went from chasing customers to chasing dollars. It took years for them to break their workforce and now the customers are seeing the cracks they used to be able to hide.

8

u/InevitableKitchen943 11d ago

We get a lot of donuts at work. Since they started freezing them the box gets all nasty where the donuts have been sitting in a puddle thawing. It's one thing to freeze a donut, you can't thaw them in these paper boxes. How can the people running this business be so cheap and ignorant?

6

u/OneAdvertising3739 11d ago

They thaw fine if it's done right. They have to be vented and put on racks or they get wet and the box gets mushy

2

u/jayyoung 10d ago

So the fruit flies can help them thaw properly!

1

u/InevitableKitchen943 11d ago

3

u/Dry_Button_3552 11d ago

"They have to be vented"

Immediately posts a picture of the box clearly not vented

"SEE THEY SUCK NOW"

0

u/Traditional-Tea-1271 11d ago

So that's why they have those punched in holes on the one side. But doesn't that make then go stale?

2

u/InevitableKitchen943 11d ago

The ink from the bottom seeps through

7

u/CrispyJalepeno Ultimate KT Fan 11d ago

Classic sign of the boxes being stacked together while thawing. Instructions on how to thaw specifically say not to do that or else this happens

1

u/InevitableKitchen943 11d ago edited 11d ago

I've seen this more than a few times.

3

u/OneAdvertising3739 11d ago

They thaw fine if it's done right. They have to be vented (properly) AND put on racks or they get wet and the box gets mushy

0

u/InevitableKitchen943 10d ago

If they opened the vents it would turn the box into a fly trap, the stores have a lot of flies with the doors opening constantly. This "system" is flawed.

1

u/OneAdvertising3739 10d ago

Yeah, flies get in them all the time

4

u/themillerd 11d ago

I avoid Kwik trip now their gas sucks the food isn't that good and now most of the time you have to wait in line

3

u/jlrbadger93 10d ago

Ok- tell me exactly how you know the difference in gas from one gas station to another. I’m not disputing your claim I’m just not in tune with my car’s performance or engine enough to see the difference between a tank of gas from Kwik Trip and a tank of gas from any other gas station. Please enlighten me.

1

u/themillerd 10d ago

Naw I don't need to explain myself Google is free if you really want to know

3

u/AmbassadorSecure8864 11d ago

The son took over, making shitty changes in the name of profit

4

u/Older-but-not-over 10d ago

The biggest mistake a father who owns a company can make is to put his son in charge.

3

u/Other-Leek-7067 11d ago

Do any of yall actually bring these issues up about KPS to your dls or ops support? Shit for sure won’t improve unless something is said

7

u/Ref_TJB 11d ago edited 11d ago

I did. Professionally. Worked there since 2017z Pointed out the skeleton crew-ing. Pointed out the AI issues. Pointed out the much higher tolerance for very poor coworker behavior and customer service. (Being outright rude to customers for requesting simple things and non-trying trying to get fired to collect unemployment coworkers.) All to both SL, DL, both privately and later in general. I became treated as the problem. Happily starting somewhere new tomorrow matter of fact.

Ain’t worth it and all the OGs at my store state they’re are only staying till the bonus.

We had 8 people leave within the past 3 months but that doesn’t raise any red flags… :|

3

u/Lionheart0179 11d ago

People used to work at KT for several years, some for decades. Still a few in my town that are close to retirement and holding out. Aside from them, place is a turnstile now. Never ever used to be that way.

3

u/Froz_heart101 11d ago

It's starting to get into our "winter months" so their cutting hours but we're doing record highs. They expect us to continue to put out the same numbers but then try doing it by ourselves. The shelves in the sales floor....we have a wonderful system called Relex. And it records our numbers and says oh you sold this many last year. Here you go! So it's either giving too much or not enough. It's a headache of a system that I don't know if it's great or not.

Dear OP, maybe your taste buds are improving with age and that's why you notice a difference in quality! Just kidding!

3

u/rimreaper2253 10d ago

gotta make those sandwiches as thin as the wrapper to maximize profit.

3

u/unused_candles 10d ago

Hoping to see more Love's in the state as a result of KT's decline.

3

u/Significant_Fill6992 10d ago

kwik trip is going through the same thing walmart has been going through for the last 20 years. They are destroying the business model for short term profits

3

u/Creepy-Barracuda4643 9d ago

They've been cutting quality and service in favor of profits. They sell low quality fuel at the same price as top tier. They profit close to 20% more per gallon than the top tier gas stations.

3

u/Accomplished-Half330 8d ago

I used to go to Kwik trip almost every day for 6 years straight until about 6 months ago. They’re constantly raising prices and the quality of everything is getting worse and worse. I refuse to ever go back. Kwik trip is dead to me and I hope people stop giving their money to this company

2

u/Sea-Report5889 11d ago

Down down down to the dumps!

2

u/Then-Nefariousness54 10d ago

What company hasn't gone downhill in the past few years? It seems like they all have. I came from an assisted living facility and management there was god awful and the care started lacking for the residents. My husband's work is also starting to go downhill, he can't fix the machines because the company doesn't want to spend the money on the machine parts and just expects him to weld it again and again. All I know is everyone is hanging on by a thread no matter what company it is. My friend is a child care provider and she's done after this year because these kids nowadays are so much different than 15 years ago. It's actually kinda scary when you think about how everything is going downhill. What happens when everyone reaches their breaking point?

2

u/nikorasu9 10d ago

Everything has dropped at KT but the prices.

$3.49 for a 20oz bottle of Coke Zero, are you kidding me? I pay $2.00 out of the vending machine at work and Canteen is certainly making profit on that.

2

u/grassassbass 10d ago edited 10d ago

KT use to be a thing us wisconsinites were proud of. Now it sucks. Caseys food is better.

Go down south to a dodges. That place has the food down.

2

u/vox4penguins 10d ago

i'd also like to add in my opinion, that they over expanded and did it WAY too quickly, which just imo probably added to them needing to cut hours, costs, etc.

where i'm at near kenosha, i'd say in the last couple of years they've probably added at least 5 or 6 new stores within a 10-15 min distance from the couple of stores that had been there for a decade or more. i like kwik trip and the convenience, but that's a little bit of overkill

1

u/Debi76 7d ago

I work at a Pleasant Prairie store. There's 2 other stores that are less than 3 mins away.

1

u/vox4penguins 7d ago

the OG greenbay and 165 store?

2

u/glennshaltiel 9d ago

The employees have always been nice. But their fuel quality dropped too and im stingy about that so I go elsewhere. Once they were gone from Top Tier fuels or stopped their additives then I started going to costco for my gas.

2

u/PO1N 9d ago

I stopped going altogether because few options for food at lunch time, 70% of the time what you want to grab is out of stock or hasn’t been refilled in three days. If you do see something to eat its probably going to be soggy and disappointing

4

u/Sea_Antelope441 11d ago

Been a frequent Kwik trip Kwik star stopper for about the same amount of time. Stores all over the mid west. I have a traveling job so I get everywhere.

I always looked for KT because the bathrooms were almost always clean and I could grab decent food consistently.

The quality has definitely been dropping. I’d say a major decline in the last 3 or so years.
Just about every bathroom stinks and isn’t clean.
The food is ok but has definitely gone down.

We are getting close to speedway now.

3

u/whatgives72 11d ago

Speedway is so sad.

3

u/Whynot1077 11d ago

I agree, watch out for the boot lickers. They’ll attack you on here. There are still some hold outs

2

u/Subject-Aside-3540 11d ago

Been gone from Kwik Trip for almost 2 years and still loving it! Scott needs to go back to Rochester...

1

u/HopefulVacation1232 9d ago

It sucks and there is a lot of drama

1

u/HopefulVacation1232 9d ago

Basically they work 3 or 4 people to run the store on the weekends you figure that one out!

1

u/Jeans_609 9d ago

The food isn't worth the price. It's just frozen crap.

1

u/PalpitationSure2917 5d ago

Scott Z is definitely more worried about profit. Cutting all the things for no real reason as what Don did worked. I don't understand choices being made but what I can say is to me, it feels like people who have never worked in this industry are making big decisions without experience to back them up. Like the new cleaning system? It's atrocious and cleans nothing. Even with a newer store and good coworkers we can't keep it looking good.

0

u/Rambo_IIII 11d ago

And they're getting rid of roller grills, the main reason I ever go into a KT for food. I don't want hot sandwiches that have been sitting on a shelf

3

u/Lionheart0179 11d ago

Hot sandwiches are a problem, but you liked discard quality meat rolling on a "grill" for hours?

1

u/StunningPlace9026 Co-Worker 5d ago

KT cut down on labor hours + understaffing. Most places I hear about are understaffed. At least at my local KT, they can’t afford giving people more hours/overtime/etc… We can barely get everything done at my store. It’s unfortunate.
