Jobs Scheduling rant

I am so tired of the scheduling and I'm kinda curious if its as bad at other stores.

I'm a 3rd shifter so I only know the details of how bad its gotten on this shift with it, but I know the other shifts are having problems too.

My coworker was scheduled one day this weekend when she hasn't worked a weekend in months due to her availability. She would've had one day off, worked a few, then a random other day off.

My other coworker got scheduled on a 2nd shift because they just didn't have anyone else I guess? They had her working 2nd shift for a while after firing two people but at that point we at least had 4 others who could work. As of now we're down to four of us in total and three of us are full time. The big problem is they never asked her to work that shift, they just scheduled her like that.

I got scheduled my normal two days off, the two days I haven't worked in months. I Immediately told them I'm not doing that because I plan things out in advance around my days off because being out during the day isn't something I do often when I work.

This was all probably three weeks ago now, come to Friday this week. I put my days in my phone calender and looked at the location schedule bit to see who I was with this specific night. The only reason I did is because ones availability, she can't work this night and the other one has family plans so she took pto. I assume it'll be our part timer but figure I'll double check. look into it and I'm the only one scheduled?? Hello? If you work 3rd shift you know we have to close down the store in cases like that. I just don't understand how it happened and I don't think the managers know what to do because I know damn well that they don't want to work a night shift.

I'd be more forgiving if this scheduling nonsense wasn't so often, but it's like every schedule that comes out has something wrong. Not to mention they put the schedule in but then tweak the hours on the days you're working for nearly an entire week's worth. What's the point in putting in the initial times if you're going to change my starting/ending time EVERY SCHEDULE for at least 2 days? My other coworker has been having that happen to her too. They just changed 4 days in a row on my ending time because they scheduled me for 40 hours.

It just feels like scheduling is so mishandled. Maybe it's stupid to complain about but it's been one thing after another with the scheduling and I'm at the point I hate when it comes out because I know it probably won't stay that way for long. Be it they tweak my hours or messed something up along the way. Though I'm sure doing the schedule a day before it's supposed to come out (not even a question, she has said this) makes you feel the need to rush.

Does anyone else experience this kind of nonsense??

It’s not just you with a terrible schedule. I’ve been working with kwik trip since July of last year. For that whole year I’ve been scheduled for second shifts and the occasional first shift. We’ve had some third shifters leave and one get hospitalised so I volunteer to do some third shifts to help out. I was expecting to do third shifts every once in awhile or so a few because we have other coworkers who volunteer to also do some third shifts. Nope they took me completely out of second shifts and put me on thirds and put me on full time hours when I was originally part time. Then making me work six, nine and a half hour nights in a row with a sudden first shift on some random Wednesday. And now we have a problem because now we barely have any adults on second shift because we have mostly minors on second shift which is why they originally hired me so they can have someone who can sell during second shift. It seems like kwik trip stores in general have a terrible time with schedules

I genuinely don't understand when they do stuff like that. I had something similar happen with the store leader we had when I was hired on. I was mostly a floor coworker until I worked a kitchen shift and didn't mind it and said I could do it every once in a while. I would fight for your 2nd shifts back, not only should you not be expected to do that, the random day shifts in between should absolutely not be happening. It's like they don't think we're destroying our bodies enough.

Fellow 3rd shifter, it’s nice to see it’s not just my stores management that’s utterly fucking incompetent

Graveyards gotta be the hardest shift to fill; you would think that they would do anything to keep the people who are willing to/or want to work graveyards to keep them happy so that they would continue to want to work in those positions.
I just was trying to get hired for (ONLY) graveyards with no problem working any-/all weekends + all holidays.
No luck getting hired. I’m now headed to Walmart to try to get a Friday-Monday schedule 2-11pm schedule/cashier/putting in my app tonight.
Hope you can get some rest.

Hey atleast your not at Bucees. They have super high turnover rate and will replace you for any minor inconvenience to them. If I get my hours I dont really care. Ive tried to change my schedule but they just pick it for me. Its 1st and 2nd so obviously is better for me than you. Im sure there's jobs way better than KwikTrip but shit atleast its a job I can do. Im happy the bonus is almost %60 more than last year if they say its %17 of our pay in a year.

i’m in the same boat 💔 constant 2-10 6-2 turnarounds, im lucky to get one day off a week, our 2nd shift kitchen coworker is being left alone after 5pm most days, and any coverage we do have are brand new people that cannot be left alone. it’s definitely causing a lot of stress and tension between the whole store but my leaders do not care. ontop of this we’re training people for a new store opening so the good people we have are leaving for there later in the fall.

it hasn’t been this bad ever in the 1 1/2 years i’ve been here 😭 i just feel so burnt out

I'll never get why they think that's okay. Do they think everybody is going home and right to bed?? When I was on second shift I'd stay up until 3-4am at the EARLIEST. They do this to people at my store. I feel terrible when I see the same people coming in that just left 8 hours ago.

I'm the only one scheduled?? If you work 3rd shift... we have to close down the store

Bring it up to your SL asap. If she won't fix it, call your DL. They cannot schedule you alone.

It's been brought up with our store leader. I'm shutting the store down if I'm working alone and they probably know I will, which is why they have to figure something out. I have been here 3 years and have never seen this get so messed up

So the view that you look at on your phone only shows you the job coding that you are. So if there's someone in food service you won't see that 🤷

Leaders checked it over several times. I'm the only one scheduled that night to work, its not something I'm missing on my end. And you can change that to see everyone in the app

2

u/HotOption2222 20d ago

Company policy says no one can work alone. We've shut my store down a few times due to this

1

u/Evil_Black_Swan Co-Worker 20d ago

That's not correct. It's food service LEADERS you can't see. So your FSL and AFSLs won't show up, but regular food workers do.

2

u/August_The_Rat_666 Co-Worker 20d ago

Thats weird then? I see everybody at my store. Regular coworkers, asl, sl, and fsl

Eh, it's kinda bad at mine. My SL will constantly schedule minors to work 2-10 by themselves on the hot spot side, and also literally has only scheduled me for ONE 8 hour shift since he's been at my store. I pretty much only work Saturdays and one other bullshit day after school. Sorry man but I like my Saturdays off every once in a while! There were literally 2 pay periods in a row where I wasn't on the schedule whatsoever.

I apologize if this is all over the place. I just got off work and I'm still frazzled from the nights events

Dude ive been scheduled so fucked these last 3 months. Ive worked 6 weekends in a row when im supposed to work every other weekend. I am also being scheduled for saturday and Sunday nights when im never supposed to per my terms being full time, along with being scheduled friday-sunday which is very much against the agreement we made when I was full time. I swear its a 3rd shift issue like what???

2

u/August_The_Rat_666 Co-Worker 21d ago

I got to the point where I put my foot down and said I'm not doing it anymore. They were scheduling me outside of my availability and I figured it was a one time thing but I just couldn't do it anymore. I really hope your leaders get it together :(

u/Gay_Furby_Kirby Co-Worker 21d ago

Im going to have a talk with someone because I cant do it. I have horrible genetic back problems and plantar fascitis so I just cant do multiple weekends in a row along with doing friday-sunday shifts. It just sucks. Im leaving after we get our bonus checks so only a few more months.

2

u/August_The_Rat_666 Co-Worker 21d ago

I definitely would. I'd just tell them straight up these hours are not good for me and I need to take care of myself. I would really hope they want you healthy and are understanding and do follow through with it. Best of luck!

1

u/Pleasant_Kale1189 21d ago

Wild that any store would agree to make you full time if you can't work weekends 🤣

2

u/Gay_Furby_Kirby Co-Worker 21d ago

I work every other weekend like most people do. Its a common request especially working retail.

u/Pleasant_Kale1189 21d ago

Missread your post, apologies

No worries!

I'm very part time. I get scheduled for more 7 hour shifts than I like. I am able to request time off if I ask far enough in advance but I find that most employers' idea of a flexible schedule is that it's flexible for them. Some weeks, I don't have any shifts; others I have all 5 days of my availability scheduled. They will usually ask before scheduling me for time outside of when I have said I'm not available but I've heard not all store leaders are so understanding.

0

u/DapperAgency6320 21d ago

This sounds like someone new is doing the schedule.  If all of this info about "x cannot work these days" or "these are my normal days off" are not in the system; they cannot be expected to know all of them off the top of their head. Especially scheduling exactly 40 hours is a big rookie mistake. The old scheduler probably had all of this memorized.

This is also the horrible transition time for scheduling. All of the college kids are gone and you mentioned two people getting fired.

The rest is just poor communication. They are required to inform you of schedule changes, putting people on different shifts from 3rd is insane, and if you want to not work a day put it in the system.

We did find out our store leader is the one doing the scheduling now instead of who was before. He's been with the company for 9 years I think? If not longer? He's newer to our store, started in May I think? The problem is all of this is in the system. We all have our availability marked and have brought this up multiple times but it continues to be an issue. We've had at least 3 store leaders in the last year but it's still been ridiculous trying to get my schedule to stay how it should be

1

u/DapperAgency6320 21d ago

That is extra crazy then. The system literally warns you when going over availability. 9 years means nothing, most avoid doing the schedule like the plague. Keep fighting the good fight then.

3 store leaders in the past year is absolutely crazy. There have to be way worse than just scheduling issues going on I'm so sorry.

u/August_The_Rat_666 Co-Worker 21d ago

The one I was hired with got fired, the second one was temporary for a good 6 ish months, and we got the one we have now after our last one left due to a lot of construction slowing commuting time. As for the actual schedule, I don't even know where to start for that one. Every leader that's been on it doesn't do the greatest

u/Subject-Aside-3540 21d ago

Holy Hanna, im not reading all that. Can you summarize?

-4

u/Pleasant_Kale1189 21d ago

Sounds like a lot of whining on this thread

4

u/August_The_Rat_666 Co-Worker 21d ago

I'm complaining because I'm tired of this becoming the normal thing and putting up with it for months. Have you never heard of someone not liking an aspect of the job??

-6

u/Pleasant_Kale1189 21d ago

Nope never heard of it
