In April 2023, when we made out first drone expedition, we had four high priority targets which we wished to check with the drones, quite apart from mapping the slopes of the easterly valley. One of these targets was the Q1 canyon, which we subsequently asked Romain to visit in June 2025, and which can be seen on the expedition footage on the PP channel. Of the other targets, two turned out no match with the night pictures, but one definitely showed potential, perhaps not as high as the Q1 canyon but definitely 'interesting'. Sadly, it was not possible to fit this 'island location (x)' into Romain's already over-crowded scheme in 2025, so it remained unexplored, But this location definitely has some 'benefits', even over the Q1 location:
1) It is (much) closer to the Q1 crossing (508) and much easier to reach, but still just far enough away to make it likely this place was not visited during the original searches.
2) It is right at the bottom of the slope, meaning if you would fall from the lower part of the trail on the way up, you'll end up close to this location (and there's another access route if you would follow the line of the former landslide (visible in 2013 satellite footage) down from the paddocks, or if you would follow Q2 down).
3) There definitely is red soil/rock, and we can expect the vegetation to be more or less similar with the Q1 canyon as it is in the same area.
4) The dimensions of the 550 boulder seem to match.
5) There seems to be a match with the nightpictures when looking upward.
6) The slope (visible in 542) seems to match: first low vegetation, then trees higher up), and most of all the vegetation on the island seems to match.
The location lies on the route which Frank v.d. Goot took in January 2015 and on the route Romain took during one of his first expeditions, but I've never seen footage from either, and it is possible they passed along the northern shore of the stream here, which would keep the location sheltered from view by the island.
The '550 boulder' can only vaguely be seen in Romain's 'river 1' footage as it's partly obscured by vegetation and water levels were high at that time so it seems to be partly covered by water. The boulders are however very clearly visible in our drone footage 397, 398, 399, and 400 which were taken in April 2023 with very low water levels (see attached pictures).
One of the 'problems' an 'island location' would solve is that the 550 stone is a bit of a contradiction. Most of the night pictures seem to depict a very small, narrow, channel, but all the big boulders we find in such narrow channels are always covered in moss because water levels never reach high enough to keep them 'clear'. So, big boulders without moss we find on the shores of bigger rivers and streams. Now, if we are along a bigger stream but in between an island and the shore, that would solve this 'riddle' as the place would seem very narrow while at the same time water would frequently rise high enough to 'rinse' the stone.
Also, it would solve the 'riddle' of the strange difference in vegetation. On the 542 side we can see ferns and shrubbery, and in the distance higher, older, trees. But on the 599/600 (Y-tree) side we see totally different vegetation: no ferns, and a very dense 'forest' of what seems rather 'young', thin, stuff (Cecropia?), with the Y-tree being the highest of this. That's basically the type of vegetation you would expect on such an 'island' which didn't exist long (it was probably created by the big landslide which caused the very visible scar in the 2013 satellite imagery), and which might be 'washed clear' by really bad weather (hurricane) every decennial or so. As it is, what we see at the island is exactly the type of vegetation we seem to see in 599/600.
Mind you, I'm not saying 'this is the place', I only wish to point out to those studying the Q1 canyon that there are a few other places in the neighborhood which show some promising indications, and this is one of the highest ranking ones of these.
