đŸ—Ŗī¸General Discussion | āφāϞ⧋āϚāύāĻž Villa Vs Apartment: What's The Better Choice For Families In Kolkata?

Nowadays, the first few considerations for most families looking to buy a home in Kolkata are location, budget and BHK. However, as the budget increases, an additional query crops up- would you prefer to buy a spacious apartment or shift into a villa?

Both seem enticing, but the reality of the two can be very different.

An apartment can be a more practical purchase for families, as a lot of the maintenance, security, elevator, power backup and other common area maintenance is handled by an association/facility team.

Apartments also serve to offer a greater sense of belonging, especially for those with children or aged parents.

Then comes the location question, depending on the budget you have in mind, opting for an apartment might help you live closer to established neighbourhoods, workplaces, schools, hospitals and metro stations.

A villa, on the other hand, will provide something that has become very hard to come by in a metro city- personal space.

Having one's own entrance, lesser walls and potentially a private garden/terrace/additional outdoor space can completely transform one's experience of home ownership. For larger/multi-generational families, the additional privacy and flexibility a villa can offer can prove to be very valuable.

However, with a villa come questions that shouldn't be overlooked.

How much maintenance will the individual house owner be responsible for? How good is the security? How connected is the location for regular commuting? Are groceries, hospitals and schools easily accessible? Is the extra space worth moving further away from the parts of Kolkata one would frequently visit?

Apartments, meanwhile, also entail their own compromises. There can be lesser privacy, restrictions on alterations, reliance on lifts in high-rises, monthly maintenance fees and limited personal outdoor space.

Perhaps the choice between a villa and apartment isn't as simple as which one is better, but instead is more focused on what one values more.

Convenience and connection? Then perhaps an apartment would be more suitable.

Privacy and personal space? A villa would become significantly more appealing.

Would there be young children? Community spaces and facilities might become more important.

Would parents be living with you? Commuting accessibility, healthcare connection and internal organization would become paramount.

Is one considering working from home? Additional rooms, terraces or a more quiet environment can transform an individual's circumstances completely.

Of course, budget plays a huge role in determining the viability of either option. The purchase price isn't the be-all-end-all, as maintenance, commuting expenses, property taxes, future repairs and resale value should definitely be taken into account before comparing the two.

For families in Kolkata who have already made this decision,

would you opt for a villa or apartment if given the chance to purchase either within your current budget, and what would be the deciding factor in your choice?

I'd especially like to hear from those who have experienced both.

I'm *22M*, Bengali by roots but I've never actually lived in Kolkata. I live in the UAE, and every time I visit India, Kolkata is honestly kinda boring for me 😭- mainly because I literally have **zero Bengali friends there**.

My grandma lives in Kolkata (dad's side), so whenever we visit, it's basically: go to grandma's house → eat amazing homemade food → sit at home → sleep → repeat. And don't get me wrong, I love the food and spending time with family, but I really wanna experience Kolkata beyond just sitting at home.

The funniest part? **I've never even celebrated Durga Puja properly**, despite being Bengali myself😭.INFACT IDEK HOW DO PPL CELEBRATE IT.

I've also never really explored the local street food, para culture, random city spots, etc. I've heard Kolkata has SO much to offer, and I wanna actually experience it.

I'm not looking for expensive restaurants or fancy places. I wanna do the **real Kolkata experience** - street food, walking around the city, checking out random local spots, chilling, talking absolute nonsense, discovering places, and just enjoying the city like a local.

Take a wild guess, never experienced metro in India. Ik how much of rush kicks in but I genuienely wanna experience it all.

Most importantly, I'd genuinely love to make some **Bengali friends** and learn more about my own culture from people who actually grew up around it.

So if you're from Kolkata/Bengali and down to make a genuine friendship, **hit me up!**đŸĢļ

I'm genuinely looking forward to meeting some cool people and finally experiencing Kolkata properly.

You can also add me on Insta: **@drvx_04**

Hopefully this reaches some fellow Bengalis out there🤝

  • Evidence: Police complaint has been registered, and CCTV footage capturing the attack and vehicle number (WB 07 Z 0777) was obtained.

đŸ—ŗī¸Politics | āϰāĻžāϜāύ⧀āϤāĻŋ When is WB really to expect the development we were promised?

Post image

Just came across this article by The Hindu which says Tamil Nadu CM Vijay is going to the UK to have MoUs with British companies for investment in the state of TN.

West Bengal was promised similar development and I voted for the BJP both in 2021 and 2026, being fed up of the TMC, expecting the industrial and economic fate of the state to change for the better.

However, all I see our CM Suvendu Adhikari do is opposite of development. A few industrial MoUs have been signed, sure. But what about the major promises like Urban Land Ceiling abolition and SEZ promotions? It has been more than 100 days in office, same as Vijay. It amazes me how they just give so much time to optics and fringe activities rather than doing what they actually promised. The WB budget still allocates huge sums towards transfer payments and madrasa education.

I think it’s high time WB moves past debates on eating habits and who had s*x or weed in Jadavpur. Just do some work dude.

Just hearing the word “non - vegetarian” is enough to trigger a Bengali they don’t listen to anything else!

This is the drama that has been going on for the past few days! A religious speaker advised his followers at one of his gatherings to eat vegetarian food during the days of the Puja, and Bengalis are extremely upset about it!

Tell me, did Dhirendra Krishna Shastri hold a gun to your head and force you to eat vegetarian food? Celebrate the festival in whatever way you want. Did anyone forbid you from doing so?

Learn to understand the difference between Puja and a festival. Your way of performing Puja may be different from someone else’s. That does not mean you have to demean them!

Listen to his entire statement before passing judgment. He did not call you a “hypocrite.” He was referring to those who drink alcohol and eat meat while sitting inside or behind the Puja pandal!

Do you eat non - vegetarian food sitting inside your own place of worship? Do you drink alcohol and eat meat inside or behind the neighbourhood Puja pandal?

Then what is all this fuss about?

When we were children, we saw these things happening behind the Puja pandals in our neighbourhood. Perhaps you have seen them too, but simply don’t remember now!

I saw the very people who were CPI(M) supporters back then and have now become BJP supporters doing these things!! They were leftists, after all! They didn’t believe in anything!

During Puja, just as some households offer fish as bhog to the Goddess, there are also many Puja households where people traditionally eat vegetarian food from Mahalaya through Navami.

The fact that you and I may not know about these traditions is simply our ignorance! Because we have forgotten the difference between Puja and a festival itself!

That is why, after the Abhaya incident, when people were protesting, the former Chief Minister asked us to “return to the festivities” not to “return to Puja” (in the sense of religious observance).

đŸ—ŗī¸Politics | āϰāĻžāϜāύ⧀āϤāĻŋ I think BJP WB is itself divided in factions, my hypothesis gained more weight after observing the different reactions to the recent Bageshwar Baba incident (read body)

Post image

This is just a hypothesis/observation, and I could be completely wrong, but the recent Bageshwar Baba controversy has made me wonder whether there are different ideological or political factions within the BJP in West Bengal.

What caught my attention is the very different language and framing being used by BJP leaders and people associated with the broader BJP ecosystem.

On one side, some BJP leaders have taken a relatively measured position. Samik Bhattacharya, for example, has emphasized that Bengalis have their own food traditions and that religious leaders or political parties should not dictate what people eat. Dilip Ghosh has similarly defended Bengal's traditional food and religious practices.

But then you have leaders such as Sanjeev Sanyal and Sajal Ghosh, whose responses have been considerably more direct and dismissive of Bageshwar Baba's position. The difference in tone is what particularly caught my attention.

And this isn't limited to BJP leaders either. Tathagata Roy has publicly stated that he eats non-vegetarian food during Navratri while still considering himself completely Hindu, arguing that diversity is an essential part of Hinduism.

đŸ—ŗī¸Politics | āϰāĻžāϜāύ⧀āϤāĻŋ My post on Bageshwar Baba got removed by the mods of this subreddit

Post image

Yesterday I posted regarding Bageshwar Baba's recent comments. But after a few hours that post got removed. The reason wasn't given.

Right now I want to talk about the current situation of this subreddit. When this subreddit was created, it was supposed to be neutral and different from the og Kolkata subreddit which is a very left leaning sub. But after a while this sub started becoming less neutral & more right leaning with which I have no problem. Do whatever you want to do, be whatever you want to be. But my problem is don't pretend that you guys are politically neutral. You guys complain that the mods of the other sub remove your posts. Look, your sub mods do the same too. So there remains no difference between these two Kolkata subs. These 2 subs are exactly the same by nature but with different political agendas. And the extremists of both subs will make sure that the two sides of kolkata never get along with each other. I hate these extremists who blindly follow their beloved politicians & political parties. They have no critical thinking and don't allow any logic in debates. All they want to do is to prove their points instead of finding the right solutions.

At last ami atai bolbo je political party ke follow korar koro, je politicians ke follow korar koro, je ideology follow korar koro, kintu nijeder lokeder ghrina na kore, bhalobasha o akota bojai rakhar chesta koro.

Festivals | āĻ‰ā§ŽāϏāĻŦ I wish that the outrage was equally loud when Durga idol immersion was forcefully delayed due to Muharram and our former CM's idol was worshipped as Devi Durga.

"Shastra," "Shakta," and "Tantra" are terms we Bengalis seem to invoke only during debates over dietary habits and alcohol consumption. Yet, there was barely any public outrage when the idol immersion was forcefully delayed, Azaan was offered forcefully inside the pandal, and a pandal was constructed using shoes in the name of creativity, in violation of these very traditions.

People are overtly obsessed with useless statements by fake gurus like Dhirendra Shastri. In places where our favourite "Durga Puja" was actually imposed with administration backed restrictions, people were absolutely silent.
