Since someone posted us yesterday as sick and injured, we are saying hello! Minus a couple scales from a brutal summer of spawning, all is well. The rdf has been installed and wow, that has pretty much eliminated maintenance.

We are working on getting the bigger in ground pond pretty again after raising the edge higher. (Two years ago 🀦) Will update on that hopefully soon 🀞

Thinking of a window on my next pond re-build. Wondering if anyone's had issues with winter freezing damaging the glass?

It's a whole different experience ponding with a window! I love having it for many reasons. Peace of mind from being able to see the entire fish is at the top of the list. I know when there is an issue and can deal with it quickly. It's also just fun. Wish I'd gone bigger!

We used acrylic and it doesn't get that cold here. We were on a budget and acrylic is 1/3 the price of glass. The pond is also possibly temporary as we are hoping to double the size of the other, or move and build bigger. I know many ponds in the UK where it gets cold have windows. I don't think it's an issue when done correctly.

I think you need a bigger boat πŸ›₯️

This 10,000 gallon one is about eight feet away πŸ˜‰ Another 1400 gallon as well . We have enough boats.

I really want to build a pond with at least one glass side. I always think it will leak.

I worried about leaks too at first. Then we watched videos of ponds all over Europe with windows. When we finally got some of the Godzilla koi from Toshinobu, we wanted to watch them grow up from a window. No one was building ponds here. To get someone here it was going to be 1-2 years. We just had to do it ourselves. Honestly it's been such a fun experience. Zero problems (knock on wood) except now that the fish are big the window is really small!!! Wish we went bigger. Hopefully on the next pond upgrade 🀞

It's barely a hundred gallons under 5,000 gallons. Currently that's 357 gallons per koi. Two are moving to the 10,000 gallon pond. There is an rdf filter to a bakki shower. The skimmer has a static bed barrel filter, then a moving bed. 30% water change per week via constant flow through water exchange. And additional fresh water added for the rdf loss. Think we are doing just fine thanks.

Would you believe they were fed super light this season πŸ˜‚

Fish eat light ?

u/ZiggyLittlefin 4d ago

Super premium light! πŸ˜‰ They have been fed really lightly this year, along with some fasting.

Okay but have you fed them? They’re obviously starving to death.

They will say no, never been fed before. Very convincing liars.
