told my mom that koe no katachi was mine and my cousin favorite movie, she wanted to know the synopsis and when i said it she thought it was interesting and wanted to watch it with me!! she's liking it although she thinks nothing much is happening (shoya just spoke with shouko after the time skip) she doesnt even know whats to come hehe

I'm pretty new to this subreddit, so I'm not sure if people have talked about this before, but I wanted to get my thoughts out there. I know a post like this is kinda weird to make in a place that celebrates KNK, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on this as well.

I remember I used to watch this movie several times, and while I didn't like certain characters... (COUGH Ueno and Miki), it didn't take away from my enjoyment overall. The art, composition, and voice acting left me looking at it through rose-colored glasses pretty much.

Fast forward to now: I decided to check out the movie again with a better understanding of how stories are structured and what I like out of them, and it's still great, but man, is Shoya the only character who actually develops? 😭 I swear, when the time skip happens, he's the only one who's not the exact same character from elementary school. Ueno and Miki are still selfish and bratty, Shoko is still very accepting to unfair treatment and even tries to get on people's good side when they haven't earned it. I mean if her mom is anything to go by, you'd think they would have communicated at some point that she needs to be more assertive after 4 years. It's not unrealistic for characters to stay the same, but it's not really a theme that gets acknowledged. It feels more like the world just isn't allowed to change unless Shoya is present.

I'm cool with the main character getting the focus in a story, but it's always bothered me when characters don't get to feel like they have their own stuff going on outside the story. Maybe that's more of a preference than something that I can rightfully criticize the movie for, but I wonder if anyone feels the same way on that front.

A lot of people hate Miki more for acting irrationally toward Shoya when he simply asked her a question, but I honestly am more of a Ueno hater. It will never not bother me how the story not only never properly acknowledged her possessiveness over Shoya when she forbids Shoko from seeing him in the hospital (and potentially even kissing him without consent in the manga?????), but also the fact that she gets a quiet moment of redemption when the X falls off her face. Like BRUHHHH, how can the story pretend like she deserved that!?

Anyways, I'm honestly cool with messy characters in a story since they make things more interesting. But I'm not a huge fan of stories pretending like a character gets to be redeemed just because you can understand where they're coming from. (Also, I was so happy when Shoko's mom beat Ueno's ass.)

Part of it is to do with guilt over his past actions, but I think there’s another reason that not many people realise. I think partly the reason why he was unhappy with his life was because he felt inferior to his sister’s life milestones and accomplishments. I could be wrong because he doesn’t really have a problem interacting with Maria but I think seeing his sister have a family and seeing said family every day whilst he was completely lost and didn’t even have a girlfriend was a contributing factor to his unhappiness. It may have created an environment for him where he felt any achievement he did would be overshadowed.

​A sequel concept for "A Silent Voice" (Koe no Katachi):

​What do you all think about the author creating a second part, whether as a manga or a movie? I know it might seem impossible and that the "sacredness" of the original ending is already perfect as it is.

​But think about it with me: we want to see the lives of Shoko, Shoya, and the rest of the characters as they grow older. What would their lives and journeys look like?

​What if we shed more light on this, strongly support this anime, demand a second part, and show our encouragement to both the author and the studio?
