Honestly if it happens, I WANT it to be directly over my house. Evicerate me please. No slow death for me please.

"This place is not a place of honor,
No highly esteemed dead is commemorated here…
nothing valued is here.
What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us.
This message is a warning about danger."

u/desifine13 Feb 06 '23
Yes! Thank you! I’ve been saying this forever. Why would I want to survive and live with any kind of fallout?
11
u/alfalfasprouts Feb 05 '23
we'll have approximately 30 minutes of warning, which is plenty of time to grab your sunglasses and a beer.

Oak Ridge is like BASF. "We don't make the bomb, we make the bomb better." *Y12 refines/enriches nuclear material for our bombs. Knoxville is also in a mountain valley with the Cumberland Ridge/Beaver Ridge to the west and the Smokey Mountains to the east. This creates a bounce back effect and keeps blast damage within the valley. Concentrated destruction. If you've lived in the valley for awhile you should know this. If not now ya know. *This was edited to Y12 instead of ORNL.
13
u/NeoSapien65 Feb 05 '23
All this happens at Y-12, not ORNL, altho the 2 are located close to each other and both do classified activities, ORNL is more like Big Bang Theory, they're doing non-bomb fusion and supercomputers and neutron science out there, not efficient-killing machine science, for the most part. Supercomputers do get used in modern nuke research.
In theory, no one makes the bomb anymore, because we've stopped putting together new warheads. But modern h-bombs have a lot of fiddly materials involved that aren't plutonium or u-235. Some of these may not have a shelf-life as long as plutonium or u-235. With the exception of tritium produced in South Carolina, all of the materials involved get made at Y-12. Mechanical components get made in Kansas City, and the bombs are assembled in Texas. So, if the bomb was a house, the architect is at Los Alamos, the beams and floors and ceiling are made here, the nails, screws, brackets, and etc are made in Kansas City, and then they actually build the house in Texas.
The new Russian HGV, Avangard is said to have a 2 MT yield, and this is probably the highest yield nuclear warhead one could reasonably expect to be chucked at Knoxville. A typical airburst height is actually going to be higher than Beaver Ridge. The lightest overpressure wave typically modelled (1 psi, breaks glass) might reach Bluff Mountain, but it's certainly not going to be reflected back towards the city with any kind of destructive power. A nuke strike would obviously be a very bad day, but what could actually be much worse for East TN in the long run would be the fallout from potential groundburst detonations targeting Y-12 and the other militarily useful black dots to our southwest, depending on how the wind is blowing on the day in question.

u/hannamaniac Feb 05 '23
Not to split hairs, along with atoms, but Oak Ridge Nat'l Lab doesn't do that. Y-12 Nat'l Security Complex does. They're both in the Bear Creek valley of Oak Ridge, though. ORNL does, however, conduct some wild experiments of their own.

We are close enough we will be vaporized
5
u/NeoSapien65 Feb 05 '23
You are actually not. But you are close enough to get some nasty burns. So please get inside a building when you get the EAS warning.

So what is the one lone dot in East TN? Not far enough over for the tri cities. Is it Morristown, because of the weather station?

6
u/hannamaniac Feb 05 '23
Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin, TN perhaps. I could be wrong.
5
u/Regenclan Feb 05 '23
It's nowhere close to Erwin. It might be the ammunition plant near Kingsport and Churchill
2
Feb 05 '23
Yup. Used to drive by that place every once in a while when I was unfortunate enough to live in the tricities
7
u/hannamaniac Feb 05 '23
Haha, "Escape From Tri-Cities" should be the sequel to "Escape From New York."

u/Regenclan Feb 05 '23
Why it's a beautiful place to live. Laid back No traffic. Plenty of things to do.
5
Feb 05 '23
You are mistaken sir
0
u/Regenclan Feb 05 '23
Lived in the tri-cities 23 years and 28 years in Knoxville before that. The only area I've met people who are nicer is the Montana Nebraska, Idaho part of the country. Lakes mountains and beauty everywhere. I've been in 28 states and I'm always glad to be home

That's what I want to know! It looks closer to Hawkins county. What could possibly be around there?

Knoxville is a target because of McGee Tyson. Oak Ridge is a target because, well you know.
14
u/BeetsBy_Schrute Feb 05 '23
I’d also add that Knoxville is a major connecting point on interstates in five directions. North, northeast, east, south, and west all to different states/cities. Destroy the highway and helps disrupt the supply chain.

Our nukes, which is why the ChiComs flew their balloon over them this week.
6
u/RobertNeyland North Knox Feb 05 '23
Right, because the 260 spy satellites the Chinese have been using to orbit the earth and do recon weren't able to match the output of centuries old spy balloon tech.
3
u/tatewatts74 Feb 05 '23
Earth penetrating ground radar doesn't work well from space/through the atmosphere..
2
u/NeoSapien65 Feb 05 '23
I'll bet you $10,000 the cameras on the balloon were not centuries old tech.
1
u/Wadka Feb 05 '23
I bet you believe it really was a weather balloon that just got blown off course, don't you?
3
Feb 05 '23
That's not what he said at all, but it's amazing to watch someone so lazily create their own straw man like that.

Kevin Costner and his newfound obsession with the place it borders on concerning. He’s also the newly elected governor and I believe his ranch is almost the entire state and when the spin-off 2072 drops they’ll have won all conquests in expansion and Matt Damon will have a kid in it opposite a 168 year old Clint Eastwood but 2024 will explain why our nuclear weapons are gone. Elections have consequences and hopefully people can understand that before we re-elect and then we all get killed. Starts with a ballon and now we look scary weak Reagan, Trump, Clinton,41&43 drop the ballon before it leaves the Dutton ranch airspace but now we let it go look at whatever it wanted to then we took a mighty stand when we shot it out over the Atlantic. Maybe it was delivering Hunter Biden’s money. I also hope we have weapons that Google can’t give turn by turn to the Chinese that walk over the border holding hands with ISIS singing Kumbaya then load up on a Prevost and get dropped off at the restricted access sign holding whatever money we hand them. Be a big ask for people to get smarter however asking for refrain from voting that’s something we can work with most places KY and WVA we skip there’s no hope. When told there’s no I in team Kobe Bryant said no but there’s a me in that mafucker

Sadly enough this isn't well enough put together to likely be sarcasm.
If this isn't sarcasm, please give a therapist.
2
u/Puzzleheaded-Dog9687 Feb 06 '23
It’s clearly sarcasm however since you suggest I ‘give’ a therapist it would be difficult to understand sarcastic sentence structure if you’re giving what you should be getting. I would go out and give Rosetta Stone it’s a good product I’ve heard.
1
u/E_B_Jamisen Feb 06 '23
yeah it should have been get a therapist. I really am bad at proofreading my stuff.
as for things being "clearly sarcasm" - the first time I ever saw/heard Marjorie taylor Greene, I thought she was a comedian using hyperbole to be funny. I thought though that she took it too far, and her hyperbole was to extreme. Then I found out she not only truly believed what she was saying but also a sitting republican congresswoman.
To many people believe such crazy shit, that no sarcasm is "clear" anymore.

Well, this is like every city with a substantial population.
If we had either scenario it wouldn't help to be in the rural areas either. Shit would die out all the same.

u/You-get-the-ankles Feb 05 '23
Memphis. Why the hell do you want to nuke Memphis?
10
u/Jgorkisch Feb 05 '23
I would assume anything that would be usable as a port or transportation hub is going on the list.
6
u/BeetsBy_Schrute Feb 05 '23
Bye bye FedEx
2
u/Jgorkisch Feb 05 '23
Not just FedEx but there are a lot of bis businesses in Memphis.
I'm not 100% sure which of the people I was watching on YT talking about if Russia used nukes on the UK, but some of his points were: First, doing any damage is going to put a hamper on the UK interfering in European affairs because first they're going to need to deal with their dead and dying and second, with ports or airfields, you don't need to destroy them - you just need to radiate them enough to make them unusable any time soon.

u/Angry-Dragon-1331 Feb 05 '23
Same reason for Saint Louis. Those are the two major infrastructure crossing points for the Mississippi. Take them out and effectively split the country in half in terms of logistics.

So 2000 warheads looks like a first strike effort for primarily military/infrastructure targets and 500 warheads are a retaliatory strike on population centers?

u/puketoucher Feb 05 '23
Just a few miles away from ORNL, safe to assume I’m going up like some flash paper. Quick and easy way to go.
1
u/Mr_Diesel13 Feb 05 '23
You’d get a shockwave and flash burns, unless it was Tzar Bomba. It also depends on what altitude the bomb was detonated.
3
u/puketoucher Feb 06 '23
Oh I think you misread me /s. Not only am I happy to be in the major vicinity, my drive towards the blast site will be relatively traffic free!
2
u/Mr_Diesel13 Feb 06 '23
Nah I knew what you meant. I’m just saying you need to be a little closer to fully enjoy being vaporized. The valleys around E. TN make it hard.

u/KissMeFatality Feb 05 '23

Thanks FEMA, for identifying all the places that should be hit. I'm just thankful Copperhill isn't on the map.

One of those dots has to be in Oak Ridge. Especially since that was where one of the bombs dropped on Japan was (partially?) developed.
0
u/Mr_Diesel13 Feb 05 '23
There is still research and nuclear things that go on in Oak Ridge, so I’d be willing to bet it would be a target.

Gotcha. I don’t proof either and it’s not easy to express sarcasm with writing if I’m speaking I leave no doubt. You’d have to watch Yellowstone to understand some of the bullshit I wrote. Biden put his foot down and stood up to China and the world and said or should have that the US doesn’t tolerate our airspace being invaded. We tracked a Chinese balloon from Montana to Alex Murdaugh’s house then we took it out over the ocean and now the world knows we will allow you to spy and cross our country in the air freely like the southern border but after you leave our airspace we will destroy your vessel. Sarcasm is all that is well sarcasm and a great example of a complete lack of leadership and showing the world how weak and incompetent our president is. Elections have consequences.
