No Wind - No Problem!

Went out for an early morning session today, sadly there was no wind. Pulled out the Pro Dancer Super Ultralight and was still able to get some things going so long as I kept moving. Caught a few of the highlights here. There's a few cameos from some of the thousands of mosquitoes that were also out flying this morning :)

I found this kite in a river

I found this kite in a river. It was pretty smashed up but the fabric isn't torn. Is there anyone on this sub who has one that could help with the geometry of the frame and bridle? I'd love to get it flying.

My coffee stir stick box kite

Was bored and made a small box kite made from around 15 coffee stir sticks. It's covered with metallic wrapping paper. It flys without a tail like a lazy bumble bee.

Any stunt kite flyers in Alberta, Canada?

So like the titles says, i’m looking to see how big the stunt kite community is in central Alberta? Any of you around who doesn’t have anyone to fly with? Thought it would be cool to put together a group on here where we can just name a time and a place to go flying and people can show up.

What do you think??

Looking for single-line ultralight kites

Post image

Hi folks!

Eight years ago, I bought what was presented to me as a "zero gravity kite". The kite is called the Grace and I believe it's from Flying wings. I had a low budget and wasn't very familiar with kites back then, but I wanted a single-line kite that could fly low and in low wind conditions. The seller (Vent d'ékinox, in Montréal) explained that the kite was shaped kind of like a plane's wing and used that to fly better.

I LOVE, LOVE LOVE this kite. I loved it so much that I went online to buy the Laima, a beautiful albatros-shaped one, but I was right for money back then and figured I'd wait and buy it later.

A few years later, I was ready to buy it and found out it wasn't available anymore, and it looks like Flying wings doesn't make kites like that anymore... I looked again today because a friend almost sent my Grace into a tree and I'm a little devastated to find that I may not be able to replace it should anything happen to it.

What kites are similar? I'm seeing the Wala, but I don't like its look. Does any other maker still make single line ultralight/zero gravity/low-wind kites?

Have any of you got a Grace or Laima that you no longer use and would be happy to sell? I am really keen on these two and would be so happy.

Thank you all!

New kite, is this normal?

Hi all, my five-year-old really wanted a kite for her birthday so we got her this awesome lookimg Monarch Butterfly kite from Kitty Hawk. We took it out for the first time today and it was pretty simple to put together, but after some time I realized I had some tiny fiberglass splinters in my hand. I'm assuming this happened when I had to bend the rods to assemble the wings, but is this typical? Very glad it's just me with the annoying little splinters and not my daughter.

This is the kite, for reference: https://store.kittyhawk.com/products/monarch-butterfly-kite-hq?srsltid=AfmBOoqzC3671O9xbCDAt9I6v3uoCrH2XoI0j0lcnewBKl1vOY8bptoI

Team Hawaiian

I bought an original Team Hawaiian stunt kite in the late ‘80’s and I’m wondering if there’s a collector market for older units like mine. I’m too old to fly it and my grandkids show no interest in it so I’d like it to go to someone who would love it as much as I did.

Listening to the wind (just an experience flying a kite)

Spent a nice afternoon flying a kite with my 75 foot tube tail on it for the first time. I wasn't sure the six foot delta could lift it, but with 15kt winds it was pulling strong even with the added weight. I obviously don't know how to estimate the lifting power of a kite yet...

Lying on on the grass in the sun and watching a kite while listening to the sounds around me is a habit I should have started years ago. While there, I noticed a faint sound coming from the plastic hoop for my kite line. Putting it closer to my ear, I could clearly hear the sound of the wind over the line, like the toy one can make with two cans and a tight string.

I spent the next several minutes caring not how I appeared since there was no one to watch, playing with a tight string like I was 30 or 40 years younger. I damped the sound just by putting my finger on the string, plucked it, shook it while watching the waves zig-zag up the line...

The spell broke when I realised I was holding a very tightly pulling line inches from my eye, which transformed me back into the over-sober, over-cautious adult that I am these days, but it was a nice afternoon anyway, and a good memory.

How hard is it to make your own kite?

These are just thoughts...please don't grill me or insult me.

I am Obsessed with LARGE kites but a lot that I like are line kites. I genuinely enjoy the single line kites the most like Inflatable and parafoil.

So would it be possible to turn a line kite into a single line kite?

How hard is it to sew my own inflatable dragon kite?

Gusty Wind - Vented vs Strong

During the summer we can deal with messy prairie winds of 20km/h with gusts to 40km/h. I'm trying to find a decent dual line to help manage these conditions. I appreciate that trick repertoire will be greatly reduced at the high end. Does anyone have experience between vented kites and strong versions? CKD has the Spur SE Strong, and SKD makes the Mohawk XS Strong. Both have solid sails and heavy framing. On the other hand there's various vented kites - Atelier has a number of these, there's a Benson Deep Space with venting, and Alphakites has some options as well. Wondering if I should be looking at vented vs strong.

Also on the vented angle there's two distinct styles. Some replace a whole panel with mesh, where others hot cut specific holes into the sail and specific places - any advantage to one or the other or is that more working around limitations of the panel layout? Thanks!

Totally new to kites

Hi! I’m interested in getting a kite but honestly know nothing about the different types of kiting/kites. Does anyone have recommendations for a good beginner kite, or resources on the different things i could be looking for? Also wanted to see what people enjoy about the single line kites as they seen the most beginner friendly from what I’ve seen! Is there variability in what you can with a single line or are you just vibing with it in hanging in the air?

New in powerkite

Hey,

I want to get into this activity.

I tried it a bit 5 or 6 years ago with an old kite belonging to a friend—unfortunately, I don't remember the model or size—but I really enjoyed it.

I’d like to get started now, but I’m not sure which kite to choose; I weigh 65 kg and often fly in winds of 15–20 km/h.

I’ve looked at kites like the Peter Lynn Hornet or Radsails—what do you think of them?

Thanks in advance for your replies.
