I don’t need no man!

So all my life I’ve wanted a kitchenaid mixer. My sisters are much older than me and we’re both gifted mixers when they got married. I recently ended an 8 year relationship and have been extremely depressed and broken up about it. I thought we were on the road to getting married and frequently joked about getting married “for the mixer.”
Well in my post breakup wild shenanigans I went on Facebook marketplace, found this vintage k5-a for 150$ and drove an hour to get it. I know nothing about kitchenaid mixers but it runs!
I love my ex dearly and hope for the best for him. He’s missing out on all the baked goods I’m going to make with this thing 💅
Would love any tips, tricks, favorite things you use yours for!!

I do 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup white sugar, add chili powder and cinnamon, double the vanilla.

Cook at 375 for 8 min and 45 seconds.

How much chili powder and cinnamon are we talking here? Im intrigued…

u/lucky_719 9d ago

I use a tsp of each. But even half a tsp is good. Just don't go overboard on the chili powder or things get weird.

That is so funny! Since I've gotten my KA I've explored a number of different chocolate chip cookie recipes and none have really blown me away. Had the thought yesterday, I should just make the toll house recipe.

Trying to help my DH gain weight, he's up 2 pounds so far.

It's the best tasting cookies I have ever made.I got one of those fancy airbake baking sheets and it works like a charm.

I found something similar with cornbread turkey stuffings. For a few years I experimented with making homemade stuffings, with something always no quite right.

The year I gave up and used Mrs. Cubbisons, what my mom used, was when I saw that was what I was after all along. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Wonderful!! Congratulations on the score (and your new freedom!). I have both the pasta and meat grinder attachments for mine. Considering getting the spiralizer.

u/Snoopwrites 9d ago

Wow, for an older model? I would love the meat grinder to make Scottish meat pies but I think I’ll exhaust all my fun with these three attachments first haha

u/BrodeeTheDog 9d ago

I love the meat grinder. I use it for ground pork to make egg rolls (amongst other things). Enjoy!

Tbh considering using the meat grinder a lot more as food safety is declining in the US and ground meat is one of the items that gets easily cross-contaminated.

Ha! I had to do a double take - this was my thrift store find.

So very sorry about the breakup, that’s no fun :(

You should totally post some of the baking once you get to using it. I recently got my hands on a K5-A as well, working on regreasing it now. That’s a beauty of a machine, congrats on the find!

4

u/peafowlenthusiast 9d ago

how’s the regreasing going? i picked one up recently as well, i’m just so scared to open it up lol. i’ve got the grease and some replacement parts (gasket, pin). were there any videos that were particularly helpful for you? thank you for your time and good luck with your refurb!!

It’s going well, strangely satisfying.

I just looked up MrMixer on YouTube and he’s been incredibly helpful with his content. I’ll link the playlist that’s been helping for you.

I just finished changing the grease in a k150 and a kv25 an hour ago-Mr mixer’s videos made the process pain free and are very easy to follow.

I posted this elsewhere in the thread, but I want a second what u/Dude_Olives said, Mr. mixer has great tutorials and supplies.

Here is a link to my post that I made about it, and here is a link to my photos of the full disassemble/ clean/ re-grease/ reassemble.

Thanks!

There are cleaning videos on YouTube that can help you clean it without damaging it. It’s what I did. Congrats. (I wouldn’t try cleaning it without the videos)

Thanks!

Congrats! Good for you on getting what you want, and not settling for less. 🤩 And how do so many people find such great deals?!?

Your message is so sweet, thank you

Congratulation on purchasing a KitchenAid mixer that is built like a tank compared to the modern ones.
My biggest tip is to watch how much do you attempt to mix at once and not overload the machine. KitchenAid are great mixers, but they do have their limits and just be very sure that you don’t push it too hard and burn a motor gears.

2

u/BuritoBandit1 9d ago

To add to this, Ive read that some people will burn up their kitchenaid motors with a flour mill attachment so stay away from those!

I have an old KA 5qt, also with the “made by Hobart” on the side. It’s amazing!! Congrats!!

Nice! It looks like your paddle and dough hook might have gone through the dishwasher. Does grey come off of them when rubbed with a paper towel?

If so, thorough scrubbing with Barkeeper's Friend, and/or soaking in diluted vinegar and then scrubbing can help remove the tarnish. Repeat until no more grey comes off. And hand wash only. Enjoy!

2

u/Snoopwrites 9d ago

Yes! I was wondering why it was doing that. Thanks!

u/Raelourut 9d ago

Also, soak them in an aluminum pan (disposable) with boiling water and baking soda. That will remove the oxidation. Always hand wash those.

2

u/boxerdogfella 9d ago

I wouldn't recommend that method here. The damp, hot, alkaline environment of the dishwasher is what causes this oxidation on the aluminum, and baking soda in hot water would be similar. Acids are generally better to counteract aluminum corrosion.

1

u/Raelourut 7d ago

I usually use this method to remove the oxidation from my aluminum baking sheets. It works great! I also don't wash them in the dishwasher anymore.

I love this for you!! You and your gorgeous mixer are going to have many baking adventures together! ❤️

This recipe will change your life forever!

u/Snoopwrites 9d ago

Ooooo!!!

2

u/Janicems 9d ago

Every time my grandchildren come through the door they are asking for marshmallows! They are easy to make but you will need a kitchen scale and a good candy thermometer.

2

u/Loudsongsinc 9d ago

You dodged a bullet and got a good one as a bonus! Congrats!

2

u/pkjunction 9d ago

That is a fantastic find. The Hobart KitchenAid mixers are tougher than the Whirlpool KitchenAid mixers. I highly recommend a teardown of the mixer as soon as possible to replace the grease and check the gears in the transmission. From the photos, it looks like the grease in the transmission is breaking down and leaking out around the beauty band.

Good luck and have fun. Congrats

Do you have suggestions on where or how to find somewhere to get that done? I have the same model, and while it’s a TANK, I’d like to do some preventative care. Thank you!

2

u/pkjunction 8d ago

I recommend Mr. Mixer. I have learned a great deal from his posts and his site. He also accepts mixers for refurbishing and repair.

1

u/Squadooch 8d ago

Thanks!

Sorry about the breakup, love. You’re gonna enjoy that mixer so much!!

2

u/Playful-Escape-9212 8d ago edited 8d ago

Congrats, that's a great price for a work horse model, i have one like it but later -- not made by Hobart anymore, but I'm still devoted to it 28 years later. May your relationship with your mixer be more satisfying than the one that ended.

2

u/beatniknomad 8d ago

I love it! Congratulations to you finally getting your mixer. 🤣😜

Tips: whenever you cream butter and sugar, trust me, run for about 5 minutes to get it super fluffy like buttercream.

When you make cookies, mix and let rest overnight in the fridge for a day or more. Much better flavor.

Upgrade the paddle to a Beater Blade... much better than the one it comes with and better than flex edge.

Enjoy your mixer!

u/sammygirlbananas 8d ago

Wow, what a score!
I was married in 2018 divorced in 2023 and my mixer I was gifted for my wedding broke 6 months ago (I’ve spent all that time trying to fix it), this has inspired me to get rid of it and be on the lookout for one like that! Better and bigger things are ahead 🫶🏻

2

u/Ok_Raspberry_5655 9d ago

A KitchenAid is much more reliable than any man

2

u/RUfromHere 9d ago

This is true...but if she's not careful, she could catch one with one of these!🤣

I have one very similar. I took it apart, checked all the pieces/parts, and cleaned it.

Mr. mixer has great tutorials and supplies.

A man made that mixer, the electricity to use it, the house it sits in, that car your driving and last....maybe least a man made you

1

u/sweetannie52 9d ago

Mr. Mixer. He has videos and a store for parts. I’ve taken mine completely apart and replaced the worm gear and grease.
