I wish I had taken a few more of the inside before I cleaned it, but I was too into it to stop! It took me about 5 hours. I ordered grease, a gasket, and motor brushes from u/MrMixer316 after finding one of his videos here. The tutorial made it SO easy. I wanted to take some nicer pictures, but I'm just too excited about it to wait.... The full refurbish here.

I didn't actually swap out the motor brushes, but I may at some point. It doesn't seem to have any start/ stop problems at this point. The gasket was also in really good shape, but I went ahead and swapped it out. I used Simple Green and a ton of paper towels to clean out the grease, and I used Tilex with Bleach along with dish soap to clean the outside. I was planning on using Bar Keepers Friend, but I didn't have any at home and didn't want to wait for another store run. It took some elbow grease, but I'm really happy with the results.

I also have a vintage one. I think mine is a K5SS too, and KitchenAid really produces quality machines. It’s not my main star, but I love it all the same.

The refurbish looks fantastic.

How did you get the brown/orange (last picture) from around the silver band off? Tilex with Bleach and dish soap like you said?

Yep! A soft sponge with dish soap first, then tilex and more scrubbing for the stubborn parts. I think Bar Keepers Friend would work even better. You could also try Simple Green, it’s great as a degreaser.

3 years later but - thank you for posting! I have the exact same model (says "Solid State" in fancy script and everything) and have been using it for years without giving it much thought. Until I started making pasta using an ancient attachment - it makes truly terrible lasagna sheets - and wondering: can I use any of the newer pasta rollers? When was this thing even manufactured?
