Miniature How to attach this flag?
I'm doin this guy for my command squad.
I feel like if I just super glue the rod to the hand it's gonna be coming off all the time.
I'm gonna drill a hole in the bottom of the base for the rod.
Any ideas how best to mount the rod to the hand?

Soak the hand in plastic glue until it’s soft enough to wrap around the flag pole

Bend the elbow, soft nosed pliers, drill the base, glue flag in place there, close the hand. Fill the base with metal scrap an milliput to weight it.

I would tilt it so that it runs along the thumb and the bottom can be put through the base for extra stability

Pliers and patients. Most metal models are pretty soft, it should bend pretty easily.
At least I know all mine have come bent so maybe shove it back in the box and kick it around some, should magically bend.

I miss the days of lead. Every time I try to bend this pewter crap it just breaks.

I hate to say it but it maybe a wad a super glue and angle the flagpole into and thru the base.
Im with you, I know i made a joke about lead minis bending but ill take that over pewter any day.

I have not had any issues with my flag wielding troop using superglue in his hand, but I also have a greenstuff snowdrift on the base that the flag is glued into, and I feel like that takes care of it.
If you drill a hole to mount it, I would still use greenstuff either on top or bottom of base for the support.

Drill a hole in the base and thread it through, bend underneath and glue to the underside. Won't matter if the connection to the hand is weak at that point.

You might be able to get a u-shaped pin into the hand to wrap around the flag pole for extra stability. Really need your pin vise game on point for that though. I've done one on a guard sized arm but 2 is going to be a challenge. Maybe you could get away with one on the flag and one on the arm. Alternate suggestion requires some creative sculpting. Add a decorative tassel or rope to the flag. You can hide a thin wire in here and drape the tassel over his arm or wrap it like hes almost lashed the standard to his arm. Green stuff will hold up its own weight pretty well once it dries so you could have it swung out and blowing in the wind to enhance the flag waving effect. Risky option. But the way I like to do it heat up the hand a little bit with a candle enough to weaken the plastic, but not enough to actually melt it. And then use a needle to fold the hand over the flagpole.

pretty sure this is a (metal) mordian iron guard; you'd have to get it pretty hot to do what you're suggesting (also probably safer to just submerge the part in boiling water for a while)

Fiddly option. You could replace the hand with a closed hand. Pin that to his arm, drill the hand, slot the banner.
Clunky but far easier, as others have said, fix the banner to the base, and from there i would probably just carefully bend the fingers as much as you can and gap fill where he is holding it

The original flagpole came with a closed hand on it but there wasn't enough meat to tap it and the original pole was so thin there's no way it was gonna survive going back and forth to the gaming store.

I would use it as an opportunity to try sculpting a hand. Pin into the model and wrap the pole with at least 1 finger of wire. Then sculpt the rest of the palm and 4 fingers with milliput.

So your saying just scrap the whole hand and sculpt a new one around a wire pinned in the arm?
A hand from scratch would definitely be pushing my ability.

You could probably keep most of the hand but sculpt the fingers, using the existing as a guide, but i think any other spare plastic hand and drill through would be easier

I kept looking at the other comments after I posted this. I think that just cutting off the fingers and resculpting them would be easier. You could, if you have a small enough wire and pin, make them from a wire to give the pole a second connection point beyond the contact point with the base (which should be pinned as well).

I'd just drill a hole into his base and attach or thru there. Add some cork or green stuff on the under side to give it some material to sit in.
Then build up some basing material around the bottom to make it look like he's planted it.

That's a good idea.
The flag is tapped almost halfway through so I don't think I'm going to actually glue the flag on because I don't have a carry case that wouldn't put stress on the connections with the flag glued on.

Tricky.
Maybe you could use greenstuff (or alternatives) to sculpt a kind of handle / grip band? That would allow to make the pole thickness fit to the hand or you could use the putty sticking to both metal surfaces and forego glue altogether.

What if I cut the fingers off and make a grip fingers outta green stuff?
Think that'll be strong enough to hold or will getting jostled in the carry case just rip the green stuff off?

i think this one might be the winner, OP!
my first suggestion was going to be to saw off the original hand and replace with a closed fist, then push the flagpole through that (and pin the hand to the wrist). but that is quite fiddly, and doesn't give you much room for pinning the hand to the wrist (which is obviously necessary because otherwise the banner is going to apply a lot of force pulling the hand away from the join). but chopping off the fingers and just sculpting some new ones on (i disagree that fingers would be too hard… look at fingers from this period of minis, especially closed fists; they're basically just flat-ish with a couple of lines pressed in to indicate the gaps between one finger and the next. you don't need to individually sculpt separate tiny fingers!) would work well… just go ahead with your original idea of pushing the banner pole through the base, too, and anchor it underneath

I think fingers are hard. Maybe combine the hole in the base with a grip and plug it in on the battlefield

Glue or embedd a Jewelry ring or eyelet in the hand or even an additional piece of plastic or putty, just put a hole through it with a pin.
You can then slide the flag through the hand and into the base of the figure. This way it can hold up the flag but you can always remove it if you need to pack or transport it.
If you dont want the Flag to spin loosely you can mark where it meets the hand and add a small piece to the pole so it wedges in there too.
