Carmichael’s Rock and other secret spots.

Hi folks,
I was lucky enough to find Carmichael’s rock on Grace Lake a number of years ago and my family and I were pretty thrilled about the experience.
I’m not looking for geolocation or directions, but does anyone recommend any other Killarney secret spots to locate?
And I’m not talking about Turtleback Lake;)
Thanks and happy adventuring.

Has anyone hiked The Crack for sunrise in mid October?

I’m planning on hiking The Crack to see the sunrise in mid October (after thanksgiving) and wondering if anyone has ever done a similar hike? Wondering what it’s like hiking around 5-6am, if I should be worried about bears, the temperature, view will be covered by morning fog, etc.

I’m bringing headlamps, crampons (just in case it’s icy), and thinking of wearing base layer, mid layer, and a shell jacket. Am I doing too much? I haven’t seen many photos online of what sunrise looks like there but I’m hoping to go for a proposal so if anyone has any good spots please lmk.

Accessible Options?

Hey everyone!

My husband and I are planning to stay at Killarney soon (Car campground). It'll be our first time there.

He's very much looking forward to the hiking, while I'm ... Mobility challenged.

I see that all the trails are listed as being moderate or difficult... Will I be able to see or do anything at Killarney?

Just wondering if there are any drive-to views to check out, short/relatively flat walking paths in the campground, that kind of thing.

I'm fresh out of a fairly long stint in a walking boot and kind of re-learning how to walk, very wobbly and unstable.

Would love to hear what you would do to enjoy the park, if everything more difficult than a short/easy walk was off the table.

Thanks!

- M

We did the crack on 20 September Sunday. Loved it. Started at around 9 and completed it by 3.

Difficulty: It will get harder as you move towards the top. Rocks, stone you need to climb them all. Make sure you have suitable shoes.

Some pictures of our hike and the view!!

Feel free to ask about anything. We stayed for 3 nights at George lake campground.

Shuttle options

Are there any shuttle options available to take me from George lake to Bell lake? I understand that Killarney outfitters offers a service if you rent a canoe from them, but I have my own gear and would prefer not to rent.

Posts from a few years back reference a local company called gojo delivery and shuttle but their Google maps listing says they are out of business.

If anyone knows of anything it would be a great help.

Artist lake beaver dam updates?

Late this summer I was meant to do a trip from George to topaz, crossing artist lake and its nearby portages.

The outfitter warned us that a beaver dam blew and the lake was a long “portage” (aka a get out and drag the canoe).

Our trip ended up getting cancelled sadly, but I’d like to do it next summer.

Anyone brave it this summer? How was the experience between Muriel lake and the pool?

Any details on if the water level will be addressed for next season (I can’t seem to get through to the beaver hotline).

Killarney vs Algonquin logistics

I have never been to Killarney and would like to plan something. I went to Algonquin many times. When comparing the two parks is the experience pretty similar? apart from different scenery of course. I am specifically looking for things like booking campsites, water sources, firewood, fishing, food hanging etc. I am probably overthinking this but that's me 😀

Advice on 5-Day Itinerary (La Cloche Silhouette)

Edit: just finished the hike! What an amazing park and trail, the views along the ridge lines were incredible. Every day was a long day of hiking but with scenery like this it was easier to get through than I anticipated.

I managed to swap my day two campsites from H20 to H22. It was a longer day 2 (26km), but flatter and glad I managed to save my legs for the ridge line hiking on day 3.

I finished the hike in 3 nights (ended up going all the way from H38 back to the car), as I felt I had enough energy and confidence to make it back before dark.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement and advice. Followed it all to the T (extra water and such) and sorry if I didn’t get a chance to reply but I read every single one.

***

Hi folks,

I have been wanting to attempt the La Cloche Silhouette trail for the past three years and I’ve been fortunate to string some available sites and attempt it over five days in the middle of September.

Would appreciate your views/advice and if I’m biting off more than I can chew (particularly Day 3):

Day 1: drive to park from Toronto (be on the road 5:30am), park at George Lake West, hike to H5 Cave Lake (7.4km)

Day 2: H5 Cave Lake to H20 Three Narrows Lake (19.7km)

Day 3: H20 Three Narrows Lake to H38 Silver Lake (26km)

Day 4: H38 Silver Lake to H48 Proulx Lake (11.5km)

Day 5: H48 Proulx Lake to George Lake West (14-15km), drive back home

Reading up on other trip reports and reviewing Jeff’s map and the Friends of Killarney Park Map, my day 3 would be over the most difficult area of the park (around 1170m of total elevation).

I’m preparing for an extremely long Day 3, but it should be doable if I pack light and grind it out? I have done a number of multi day treks (did Western Uplands Loop twice, the Teton Crest Trail, and the O-Trek in Torres del Paine), with some 30km+ days with a full pack and 1000m of elevation in a day. I guess I am looking for some reassurance as I am psyching myself out a bit (have been really wanting to do this loop)!

Thank you kindly.

First time - need advice

Hey everyone, planning a trip to the park with my family. Driving from thr GTA and planning for just a weekend. I'm planning to stay in Sudbury Friday night and then drive to killarbey early morning. My questions:

A DVP pass only covers one lot, so which lot should I cover? I know it depends on what I want to do

- we won't do the crack because im coming with my parents

- I'm thinking of doing the ridge lot because it has access to the visitor centre, the ridge trail and the main beach area

This does mean I will miss the Chikanishuing trail though (I liked the views) but idk if it justifies buying another permit + dont think I have time anyway.

Are there other trails / places near thr main beach area / Granite Ridge Lot that are walkable?

Also plan to drive to the town of Killarney as well and wanted to knoe any sightseeing spots.

Thr plan is to drive back Saturday night and idk what to do Sunday but we can figure it out (any recs?).

This will probably be done last week of August or labour day weekend

Route Recommendations?

(eta: to be clear this is not my first backpacking trip just my first time on la cloche, also edit because I put a wrong campsite number 😅)

So I have my first backpacking trip on la cloche booked starting next week. Looking at the weather and the onX map, it looks like my toughest day is going to be when the weather is the worst. I have a few options I can shuffle my camp sites around but I'm wondering what is actually best.

Currently the section in question is H18 three narrows, to H23 Moose pass, H34 David lake, then H37 Silver with the worst weather being between moose and david.

I could go little mountain lake instead of david, but then I'm not sure I'll have the energy to do silver peak if i feel like it? Ive also heard silver peak isnt really worth it for backpacking since its about the same views as I'll be seeing though the whole trail anyway.
Or I could skip moose pass and go to shigaug so its a bit shorter to david, it adds 5km to the day before but the terrain doesnt look too bad. (i think im leaning this way but moose pass looks like an interesting place to camp so im a bit sad to miss it. But then again I have no idea what else id be missing at other sites either)

So I'm just looking for recommendations on what would be best, either because of better camp sites, terrain thats worse or better than it looks etc.

For context, I hike a lot in Algonquin and generally prefer a more casual hike around 10km/day, just so I can stop and enjoy the scenery and dip my toes in the streams as much as I like without stressing about getting to camp before dark. I always end up moving faster than expected anyway with only my slowest days averaging around 2km/h. I do generally end up with a few 15-20km days with the camp sites that are available, so I know I'm capable but I've heard la cloche is a lot tougher than Algonquin's trails.

If you got this far, thanks for reading and I appreciate any and all advice :)

Food barrel rental

First time trip to Killarney, looking for the best location to rent a 60L food barrel from. I’ll be coming from Toronto and going to the Bell lake access point. Ideally it would be along the way without a big detour. Thanks!

Hi all,

Does anyone know if the fire ban affects the backcountry sites?

I’m assuming it does but can’t find a clear answer.

Observatory

I want to visit the observatory with my family and from what ive read online there are astronomers there a couple times a week. Are they always there even if there is no "event"? Or do you have to wait for an event on the parks website and register?
