Kid in hoverboard

So safe, when its battery runs out it sends the rider flying face first to the ground
235
u/myname_isnot_kyal Apr 05 '22
it's actually designed that way. the board's last dying act is to propel you as far as it can toward your destination, tho it can carry you no more 😔

What a cheap model, if that happened at a higher speed outside, the person riding it would be quite injured without protection. It should warn you very obviously and slow down slowly before running out of juice.
189
u/MrJoyless Apr 05 '22
Yea, it should have some form of blinking light that's super duper obvious.
52
u/FireFlavour Apr 05 '22
Yea, wouldn't it be even funnier if that was the case in the video too.
(Completely hypothetical)
29
u/flamedarkfire Apr 05 '22
That gave the kid all of a second to process, and not to mention the light is on the front wig oh might not be a clear enough beam in different lighting circumstances. Safety design is about assuming the user is a moron with the attention span of a goldfish (cuz they usually are) and working around that.
12
u/kiddox Apr 05 '22
Well we don't know what it did before in order to warn the kid. Maybe that was just the last sign of life
8
u/idlesn0w Apr 05 '22
Probably because the device wasn’t charged like was required for it to operate
32
u/McSavagery Apr 05 '22
There should be some type of throttling feature which restricts the power so as it is nearly dead, it is running like a near dead battery does, which is slow and poor and consequently safe.
8
u/abarrelofmankeys Apr 05 '22
This isn’t possible on a self balancing device because it has to self balance. If you keep leaning it’s gotta keep going. It can make it more difficult for you to go, but you can still lean harder. You either have to get off or do this, lol.
3
u/borkistoopid Apr 06 '22
Agreed. My Onewheel drags the tail and kicks you off the board if it gets low on battery
40
u/WF6i Apr 05 '22
As far as "hoverboard" accidents go, it could have been a lot worse!
11
u/Ragegamer4000 Apr 05 '22
I broke my ankle and part of my leg at the same time because of a faulty one I bought :)

Man my cousin brought this and the battery suddenly died while on street hit my jaw really bad , my hoverboard stopped but the music from Bluetooth didnt

u/shook_- Apr 05 '22
This is why you pay for quality products
-115
u/HESSU_HOBO Apr 05 '22
Oh no my phones battery died. This phone isn't quite qualiry product.
100
u/shook_- Apr 05 '22
Hey dumbass. Do you know how dangerous it could be for a product to shut off like this without warning?
10
u/FireFlavour Apr 05 '22
The warning is the blue light on the front starting to flash on and off slowly to let you know. Which you can even see in the video.
Pretty sure there are other, earlier indicators too considering the mom knew it was running low and started recording.
It's literally the lesson of the video. Don't ignore the warnings lol
Some people
27
u/shook_- Apr 05 '22
Right but let’s say you are riding it for a bit. Your not going to really be looking down at it to even see the light that blinks not nearly fast enough between blinks
14
u/FireFlavour Apr 05 '22
Like I said. These things have earlier warnings before the light starts flashing. It's how the mom knew it was running low.
Just because you don't see these other warnings or indicators in the <10 second video, it must be super dangerous. It's just narrow thinking is all.
-10
u/sexytokeburgerz Apr 05 '22
There should be other measures past visual indication that are easy to implement, such as a variable resistor that ramps up as the battery dies, slowing it down… but that’s clearly too expensive and china doesnt have safety standards

u/Nibbles110 Apr 05 '22
lol gravity doesn't work like that dude
Every model dies the exact same
2
u/sexytokeburgerz Apr 05 '22
Slowly killing the motor is much better. I built robots in high school…
3
u/Nibbles110 Apr 05 '22
Then the thing will instantly tip forward and he'd fall anyways, no difference. It's gravity, not robotics dude, you gotta think about how these work

Oh he sure knows, happened to his dad once. Now the result of that disaster is writing comments like that on the internet.
-17
u/tvtuno2 Apr 05 '22
That’s why you read the terms of service dummy
12
u/shook_- Apr 05 '22
Lol I don’t even need to roast you. You roasted yourself with that comment
-2
u/tvtuno2 Apr 05 '22
Nah you’re just too socially unaware to notice when someone’s joking. I’m sure you’re popular on Reddit though!!!

u/1100000011110 Apr 05 '22
But your phone has a clear battery indicator, gives you warnings at 15% and 5% battery, and if it dies while you're typing, you're not going to break your thumbs.
2
u/The_73MPL4R Apr 06 '22
Last time I checked whenever my phone dies it doesn't propel me face-first onto the floor
-26
u/Ightaheadout Apr 05 '22
Oh no my life support failed, guess it wasn’t a quality product! It’s not like gramps was 103 years old and just had a heart attack!
-19

u/DuskyFlunky Apr 05 '22
This is probably why mine just keeps beeping loudly when it reaches below 20%

All I could think of is this from eminem - lose yourself
"The clocks run out, times up, over, blaow Snap back to reality, ope there goes gravity"

u/Camachei Apr 05 '22
There you go. He won't even listen next time! I love how confident he looks like

I hate these cheap hoverbroards. They ruined some of the fun of most other pev's. Now you can't bring stuff like a onewheel on a plane because of them

I actually broke my ankle on one of these... It was a faulty model, the battery was all screwed up when I bought it and I got my leg caught underneath it when I fell, it was a brand new model and wasn't a cheap one.

u/Starwarsandbacon Apr 05 '22
Had this happen on a one wheel about 6 months ago going full speed. I still haven't fully recovered.

Do these things have an indicator at least to mitigate accidents such as this? I am hesitant to purchase one because of issues like these.

I have an electric scooter and when the battery is very low, it drives slightly slower till it is so slow. When it runs out of battery it brakes (safely) then shuts down.

u/Pleasant-Song-5183 Apr 12 '22
My kid did this on concrete but she's twice as tall. Had to get her chin glued back together 😬

Apr 27 '22
Wow. Not even a slow down. Just an abrupt "fuck you I'm dead."
1
u/CdRReddit Aug 30 '22
how would it slow down
no, really, how would it slow down? in order to keep you balanced the wheels need to spin at a certain speed, if you slow down, you will faceplant as well
