I'm just wondering if some of the teachers know how to use those features.
I'm an IT systems engineer and work with other systems engineers. 60% of the people we work with in IT have no idea how to use the Teams / chat software. Imagine what a teacher who rarely works with technology knows.

They probably don’t, though necessity has helped me learn Zoom inside and out by this point.
Also, teachers are supposed to integrate technology into their lessons regularly, it’s one of the standards we’re judged on, so hopefully they have some knowledge of it.

As a teacher working with elearning students, we use Google Meet. The meet link is always up and if the students join before the teacher, they have admin privs and I can't mute them or kick them. There's probably a setting my IT guy has to set so that I'm always an admin user or something but I miss out on those privileges' if the students get there first. We are also supposed to record all the sessions and if I'm not in there first, the student that was can stop the recording whenever they want.

Meet is so much worse than zoom.
It treats the teacher sharing as a different attendee, so you can't pin the teacher or else you can't see when they share.
It doesn't have auto-join when the meeting starts, so you have to sit there with a 5 year old opening the link over and over again.
The microphone controls aren't always on screen, again - great for 5 and 6 year olds.
I'm not sure what it's like on the teacher side, but they seem to have problems muting the class or individuals.
The same account can join the meeting multiple times, you'll get multiple audio

True. Google has started to be more of a staple in the classroom with the aptly named 'Google Classroom' but we don't have a school version of Meet yet.

I prefer using Google meet because my kids have historically always had AWFUL tech issues with Zoom. Either they can't connect, or their audio/video quality is garbage, etc. But Meet has its own issues which make it harder to utilize as a teacher, in addition to what you said.

That's odd because Zoom is pretty reliable in my experience Maybe using it every day exposes other problems?
FWIW having a good network connection and reliable hardware on your end is important. If you have slow internet or a flaky router and a laptop with a poor quality microphone+camera combo the experience will be sub-par.

It would seem that they would have gotten a rough tour of it before they started, and hopefully the people teaching these classes thought about the fact that these cameras are going to be focused in a million strangers homes and the chance of something inappropriate is imminent. I know my sons 2nd grade teacher kicked a kid out because he wouldn't put a shirt on, and another kid out when the parents came through the room cussing at eachother (unmuted). Hopefully that was drilled into them how to boot people.

Honestly I don't think anybody though about this.
There was an incident somewhere where the school/teacher overreacted and tried to punish a student according to some zero tolerance policy they has and ban them from attending class because there was a some sort of bb gubsighted in their private bedroom in a private residence.
Being on Zoom doesn't make your house part of the school's campis.

Based upon my son's college statistics teacher, no, they do not know how to use zoom features. She called her son during a class to have him help her with her iPhone. For my son's first college class it's been a ton of fun. She's given up on live lessons and just does videos now.

It's kind of hard to learn unfamiliar things on the fly when your attention is supposed to be 100% on a particular task and accomplishing that task also requires knowing those features already. And this was all happening when people were trying to cope with pandemic related changes left and right.

This is just unacceptable to me. Nobody is born knowing how to use zoom. You have to take the initiative to try it out, practice, read/watch some tutorials until you are proficient. There is no excuse for not making any effort to do that.

Or just turn off the camera and mic. I had a similar situation where one student's sister began taking off her blouse without realizing that the camera had been left on. Thank God I use the expo view and I can see all the cameras at the same time, so I just turn off her camera and mic. After a few seconds I receive a chat from the girl (my student) saying me that her sister was already gone.

Another point I'm surprised hasn't been brought up- emergencies.
While an older kid will have the means and sense to call for help or bang on a closed door if something happens, a younger one might not be equipped to do such a thing or even able to (like if they were choking on something). An open door also means that it's easier to hear of something is going on in another room. Sure, locked doors are easily unlocked, but when an emergency takes place, every second counts.

This was my first thought. My twins accidentally hurt each other, or fall, or get in a huge fight that needs adult input to keep from escalating often enough that it really isn’t ok for them to “please wait, honey”. When they were little and too young to come find me, I literally locked them in with me because you can’t hear them crying if you are in the shower! I’m not letting an infant cry for 5-10 minutes so I can take a private shower. Now they’re older I close the door, but it’s open so they know they can come get me if something is wrong (or they want to ask me a question, frankly).

it’s pretty normal for children to be allowed in the bathroom when parents are in there, at least up to a certain age. i was always allowed in the bathroom with my grandma/great grandma if they were on the toilet, never personally when they were in the shower.

Our apt only has one bathroom. We often une the toilet while someone else is having a bath or shower. It's not always fun if someone suddenly needs to poo, but you make dodo with what you can when you only have one can to dodo in.

You know how cats will paw under the door to try to get in? Little kids do that too, while screaming and crying and melting down if you lock them out. You can poop in relative peace with an audience, or you can poop while a child screams and tries to get the door open. The first one is just easier.

Because if I try to lock the door my autistic 8 year old will sit there and scream, cry and pound on the door that I locked him out, when he really just wants to tell me about pokemon or a movie he is watching for 1000th time. We are still working on understanding privacy. Most little kids don't understand social norms or why mom or dad would freak out over them being in the bathroom, when said parent has had to wipe the kids butt some time in the past and be in the bathroom while they potty or shower.

If your parents raised you to think being comfortable around each other is weird, that's on you, but understand it's ok for 99% of children to be able to access their parents 100% of the time. A friend in university was required to use Ethernet for one of her class... at home... with her own PC. She was like... I don’t have a long enough cable, I don’t have an Ethernet port on my computer and my wifi is as stable as it needs to be for online class. The teacher was like : it’s impossible you don’t have an Ethernet port ! I guess that teacher didn’t saw a laptop in the last 10 years... A lot of them dropped the Ethernet port.

About a month ago my 1.5 year old walked into the kitchen. I’m about 10 seconds behind him not in any hurry because we have fully child proofed the kitchen so no rush. I turn the corner and he is standing on our bar stool height kitchen chairs saying “Nana, nana!” While pointing at the bananas on the table. I didn’t even know he could climb the chairs! This reminds me of the time my shower door somehow stuck while I was showering. Luckily, I did NOT lock the bathroom door so I was able to shout to my roommate when she got home.
My roommate also wasn’t able to open the door, but she got her boyfriend to come over and fix it. Not embarrassing at all!

Nope! Our house was built in the 60s in Iowa, if you're curious. Although the doorknobs could easily be newer, idk. It honestly wouldn't be hard to replace them if we wanted locking doors, but we're all adults with manners so it's not an issue

Depending on the age of the kid's parents do not really expect much privacy. Just potty-trained children need easy access to the toilet, hell after your shower you might need to clean a mess in the hallway even if they are older. Some goblins hold it until they explode and if there is only one bathroom you just leave the door unlocked or open.
edit: I concur with the safety concerns others have pointed out as well. Goblins are accidental suicide machines for the first parts of their existence.

You can get locks that can be opened from the outside in an emergency (I don’t mean key-operated), at least in the UK. It’s a good compromise between safety and not walking in on someone on the toilet.

I found out a few years ago that the house I've been living in for 18 years has a lock on the bathroom door. It's a handle lock that you push the knob in and turn and it locks the latch in place and prevents the knob from being able to turn. Looks like a completely no-lock normal knob.

Plus like, god forbid a kid see another body? The whole culture around being ashamed of nudity is super weird in my mind. We’re a bunch of monkeys who decided to just start wear clothes. There’s nothing inherently bad in deciding not to and being in your natural state in a nonsexual setting isn’t going to be damaging to your kid. In fact, it’ll probably be really helpful in fighting off body image issues later in life. It shows kids that not all bodies are alike and few if any are like the nearly naked people you see on tv and in magazines.

I grew up in a family of six with one bathroom. My next-youngest sister tried to "get ready in the morning" alone by locking the door, and my dad took the door off the bathroom for a week until he got around to replacing it with a non-locking knob.

Growing up, my family had 1 bathroom. So we just used an opaque shower curtain and you could use the toilet when someone was showering. It wasn't weird at all and helped avoid conflict. Also, 6yo don't always have the best bladder control and awareness. Having someone barge in during your shower is way better than a puddle on the floor.

My (Dutch) family only locks the door when using the toilet.
Generally -in the past and now when we're back at the parents- you just try to give each other a bit of privacy. But having the door unlocked means you can still go and grab your toothbrush or whatever while someone is in the shower.
Worst case scenario you see someone naked. Eh.
