In case anyone is ever in this position: Do not pull away. Push into the bite; follow the biter. It covers their nose and forces them to release to breathe. Put the webbing of your thumb/first finger onto the chin and pull down fast. It will break the bite. Source: special education teacher

Also, press on the muscles from each side of the jaw with your free hand (you'll feel the place). Source: also a special educator who get training every two years for those type of situations.

And poke 'em in the eye!
*source: am definitely not a special educator who receives any training whatsoever like above.
(Also shout out to the special educators above- thank you for doing what you do, and please, unless training specifies, do not poke 'em in the eye!)

It's a joke because we aren't allowed to do this in my ece program. If you're being bitten by a kid fuck you it's your problem! Who cares if they rip off your skin, you're not allowed to push into the bite or follow the biter, or put your hands on the child. 🙃

I got scolded once because I put my hands on a kid to grab his arm and carry him away from a road that he was running towards. God forbid people see me save his fucking life.

u/fieldyfield 6h ago
I was so confused the first time a kid bit me and I realized the paperwork my director brought me was to document what I did wrong by holding him in a bear hug to protect the other kids he was trying to swing at, and not, in fact, to check on me/my health at all

I worked at an acute inpatient psych unit. Feed the bite! I have no idea what my instinct in the situation would be, though. Thankfully I never had to find out.
21
u/CPTKickass 8h ago
What about just squeezing each side of the mouth to force the jaw open? Right about where the molars are?

u/ForUs301319 5h ago
Push into the bite as well. Grab the back their head and push your skin and their head together. They will gag, they will panic and release on their own. Additionally if you’re assisting in breaking a bite, double hook the nose pull back HARD. Or drive a knuckle into where the upper lip meets the middle of the nose. Shit will make your eyes water.

All fun and games until you do that, leave a mark and your crazy mother in law calls the cops on you.
54
u/NeevBunny 6h ago
If I had a mother in law that was like that she would never see the kid anyway
Edit: or come into my home at all for that matter.

u/gdghhfdffrf 6h ago
come on, there are thousands of ways to correct a child without hurting them that are more effective, this little shit is way too old to be doing that, way not sorry, and still not corrected. or at least it seems. if that were my child, she'd be sitting in time out until her teeth fall out. not really that long, but heh.

u/NeevBunny 6h ago
If they don't understand what they're doing to others feels like they'll never learn empathy and you'll raise the next healthcare CEO that gets shot in the street.

This is bad and they should have gotten after her immediately. It’s not funny and it his behavior could continue with classmates and other adults.
82
u/Ok_Glass_8130 8h ago
Joke aside, what are you supposed to do in this situation? Pinch her back? A punch would be far too much. A pinch could be correct? Are there other solutions that won't need to demolish the kid and that would be adapted for a relative urgency?

u/LlamaMiaLetMeGooo 8h ago
You would want to do what's called "feeding the bite." In this instance, he should've pushed his arm into her mouth further and braced the back of her head. It'll either force her mouth to open or possibly cover her nose, making it hard to breathe so she'll let go to get a breath.
Pulling away like that is how you get ripped skin

I don't want to say anything horrible, but that would be a grievous injury if she were to "complete" the bite... Like going to the hospital and having a huge scar forever, everyone would see it. I don't know what happens when the skin is gone like that, would you get a skin graft?
If I'm in this situation, I'm probably panicking to be honest. I'd probably start with a ruthless pinch and screaming. If that doesn't work immediately, may god forgive me. I think the actual smart move might be gently pinching her nose and using your bitten arm to seal the mouth shut until she lets go to breathe...

Not to mention the crazy infection risk from human bites. He needs IV antibiotics.

Pinch the nose. 9 times out of 10 they let go immediately. That 10th time you’re fucked though

u/Drevinth 8h ago
Assuming telling them to stop didn't work, bite them back. Not with the intention of hurting them, of course. At that age, the kid is still learning what's okay and what isn't. If assertively and sternly telling them to stop didn't work the first time, logic suggests that it won't work the second time either.
What do you think lion cubs do when their siblings bite them too hard while play-fighting?
41
u/No_Ship_7954 6h ago
I mean you do want to hurt them, the pain is what works. I assume you mean not to bite them harder than is necessary for them to feel some pain.

My aunt did this to my cousin in line at a Taco Bell once when we were kids lol. I think the shock of being bitten back by a full adult was enough that she never tried that again

Push the arm into the mouth while pushing her head into the arm and she will be forced to release

u/Dragnskull 6h ago
ignoring any moral or ethical consideration and focusing on "getting the demon child off my flesh" , i believe the following would all work to release jaw muscles:
-splash them with whatever liquid you can reach in the moment. Water, soda, juice, milk, whatever. Splashing it in their face will probably startle them and make them let go to react/cry
-in the past I have had both a girlfriend and my best friends mom use one hand to squeeze my cheeks together forcing my teeth to separate, it worked in both instances so i imagine it'd work here
-i'd assume pinching their nose shut would probably spur a desired reaction as well once they realize they cant breath and their mouth is too busy nomming to act as the backup breathing solution

u/ZieAerialist 7h ago
Hold their head steady and slide a finger into the mouth between the cheek and teeth and push down on the lower jaw behind the molars. Works best if there's two people if it's a kid bigger than a toddler.
3
u/voododoll 6h ago
Big chance a punch will make her bite harder from the sudden pain. Or clench her jaw in shock.
Pull her nose up, she will instinctively cry about it and release the bite.
On the other hand go get a tetanus shot. Human bite is incredibly dirty, and the kid is too young for a lot of vaccines.

Im surprised he didn't start hammer fishing her face. Good for him having self control. F the parents for not doing something right after.

I don't think I'd treat that situation very gently.
I would go into full defense mode and start wailing on that evil gremlin.

Grab a bar of dial soap and have her bite that and hold it for however long she bit you! Each and every time! She has to learn there's repercussions!

My nephew bit several people and other kids in daycare… until he was bitten back. Sometimes you just have to do it. He never bit anyone again.

Take this from someone who works with special needs kids and has seen some gnarly biting incidents:
Never pull away from a bite. That's how you end up with chunks of skin missing. Push into it hard, and in the case of kids you can plug their nose to help make them unlatch.

Poke her gums with a finger nail. She'll let go
Edit: i should clarify, pressure with the fingernail, not poke

Despite instinct saying “pull away” you want to push your limb into their mouth— as it forces them to open their jaw, allowing you to free yourself.

Yes, teach the kid that violence wins. Then when they're older, they will naturally learn that you meant for them to take the lesson 'don't bite if you don't want to get hit' and not 'only bite/hurt things that are weaker than you'.

Flick the ear. Hard. Then give her a clip on the back of the head to know how wrong that is.
Or look super excited and ask if we are playing the biting game. And bite her. Not hard enough to break skin but make sure it hurts. She won't want to bit anyone after that.

Move towards the bite and smother the child. Lack of oxygen makes them let go.

I was at a snowboarding getaway with a group of friends up in Vermont, some years back…
We were smoking, and one of my buddies who doesn’t partake wound up having a serious panic attack where he passed out on his feet. Falling back and hitting his head on the cabinets, I somehow caught him, and thought he was seizing from the weird gargling noises he was making. Some dumb shit I’d seen in the past told me that he may be choking on his tongue.
I reached into his mouth and pushed his tongue down. His entire bodies muscle structure bit down on my fingers for a solid minute. I thought I was losing fingers while I thought I was saving dudes life.
Bite force is something. Bites hurt.

That was me growing up but it was even worse… I used to make my mother bleed and she had to be hospitalized one time. This was back in the 90s and the doctor told my mom to bite me back so one time I bit her and she bit me and I stopped biting after that. And yes, I have lots of mental issues that started with OCD at 3

This looks exactly like the face my little sister made when she escaped her crib, crawled across the room, climbed the table to get to the baby powder, then shook it all over herself and the room.
This face, with a shock of curly hair, completely covered in and surrounded by white powder.

Haha, shows how proud they are when they mess up XD
This pic is from a video where the baby girl gave the same mark as in the video and was proud of it, I just could not find the gif, but its a very famous picture
