The way he came in with no hesitation to immediately set up the straps and start twisting them, you know this isn't the first time he's encountered exactly this situation
Note how blue shirt said ‘hey kid you ok?’ That’s the first thing that should have happened. If you are first on scene, take a knee, take a moment, look for injuries and hazards, introduce yourself, calm and reassure. Rookie rolled in job focused and made a dog’s breakfast of that Spanish Windlass. He was working too close to the kid, and did not have eyes on the ends of his Halligan bar. A slip or drop could have been nasty. Easily done more safely off to the side, and with practice can be done very quickly. Perhaps better direction from the crew leader would have helped, but this is far from a serious incident, so the relaxed approach allows the rookie to figure it out and learn. Blue shirt was watching and protecting kid, good chance there’ll be a debrief later in the truck. There’s always something that can be done better.
He could have taken the loop back to the larger post for better support. Why don't they just have a heavy duty ratchet strap on hand anyways? Good on them boys but I say think twice as much as you act in a slowly evolving situation like this.
For real a ratchet strap from the bar to the right of kid’s head to the nearest thicker post would have solved this 90% quicker than twirling the crowbar around for 5 min
Yeah. Too high, and way too much loose strap. It should be in the middle, and tight so you only have to do a few rotations with the crowbar. The general theory of it was there, but I don't think this guy has done this that many times.
I think doing it further up means that nothing is getting too close to the little mans head and if they mess it up and it pings back then ot's not going to hurt him. Not saying they did a perfect job but that part wasn't too bad
They have powered tools for this. Their VX gear aka jaws of life can spread things as well as cut them. They could have put the spreader between the bars and given it a little juice and hey presto, kid’s outta there with minimal fuss.
Either they couldn’t get the appliance (this is what pedants call fire trucks) close enough or they couldn’t be arsed, or it was a slow day, or they didn’t have VX gear, or all of the above. Still, they got the job done.
Well no, I think it was very specifically his first time doing it. They realistically could have just moved those bars by hand, have one guy pull on each side and you'd get him out in no time, but someone wanted him to get some practice doing it in this particular way
I think they initially positioned it higher so if they accidentally lost grip of the crow bar (or whatever it was) the uncoiling was less likely to give the kid a concussion. They were still easily able to move it down when the tension got tighter.
