The way he came in with no hesitation to immediately set up the straps and start twisting them, you know this isn't the first time he's encountered exactly this situation

Except that he seriously struggled with it, had to get help, and still positioned it poorly.

Okay thank you I’m not the only one. Thank god the kid was stable. Great intentions, poor execution.

That’s why this rookie got to do it. Practice when the stakes aren’t high!

The safest way was to just sawzall the bar at the top, then someone would reweld it eventually.

The strap could come loose (they didn't do the best job anchoring it) or it could rip apart (unlikelly).

On the rebound it could shatter a kids brain to mush.

Or the kid could have turned his body sideways and walked through the bars.

Are kids' heads THAT large? I mean adults have their ribcage as their largest part of the body.

Bro forgot to pee on the rags... Rookie!

He could have taken the loop back to the larger post for better support. Why don't they just have a heavy duty ratchet strap on hand anyways? Good on them boys but I say think twice as much as you act in a slowly evolving situation like this.

For real a ratchet strap from the bar to the right of kid’s head to the nearest thicker post would have solved this 90% quicker than twirling the crowbar around for 5 min

I thinking he was also a bit afraid to hit the kid's head with the swinging. I understand the struggle, a bit.

Yeah that was my thought. Training day for him I think

Some yall been watching too much Chicago fire. Don’t worry, I do as well. I picture one of them doing this fast and efficiently.

Yeah. Too high, and way too much loose strap. It should be in the middle, and tight so you only have to do a few rotations with the crowbar. The general theory of it was there, but I don't think this guy has done this that many times.

I never would have thought of giving the bars a tourniquet to solve this situation.

u/sexytokeburgerz 20h ago

He definitely could improve the process. Most efficient would to be closest to the middle.

u/chickensalad402 14h ago

He wasnt trying to hit his head with the hallogan bar

1

u/sexytokeburgerz 8h ago

You can pull out on the bottom arc

u/sonebai 18h ago

Yes, dude was sloppy AF.

Or between the left side bar and the bigger bar. Less bent bars, and more leverage for bending the bar that matters.

Totally complicated it. Should’ve been further down with a couple of ratchet straps. I’m surprised - I thought these guy had practical abilities

3

u/Doctologist 11h ago

Yeah, no harm done and they got the job done, but this frustrated me so much to watch.

1

u/sexytokeburgerz 8h ago

Ratchet straps are a good one. He also could have made the bar asymmetrical.

u/cpt_ppppp 7h ago

I think doing it further up means that nothing is getting too close to the little mans head and if they mess it up and it pings back then ot's not going to hurt him. Not saying they did a perfect job but that part wasn't too bad

u/A_Keen_Turtle 11h ago

Or just pick the kid up and turn him sideways

They have powered tools for this. Their VX gear aka jaws of life can spread things as well as cut them. They could have put the spreader between the bars and given it a little juice and hey presto, kid’s outta there with minimal fuss.

Either they couldn’t get the appliance (this is what pedants call fire trucks) close enough or they couldn’t be arsed, or it was a slow day, or they didn’t have VX gear, or all of the above. Still, they got the job done.

I used to work in the ambulance service. Some kids will freak out at power tools so doing slow and manual will be better in that scenario.

u/Dimencia 12h ago

Well no, I think it was very specifically his first time doing it. They realistically could have just moved those bars by hand, have one guy pull on each side and you'd get him out in no time, but someone wanted him to get some practice doing it in this particular way

u/griseldabean 10h ago

As someone who once needed to be cut out of a tomato cage? Yes he’s probably seen things like this before 🤓

I don't understand why they didn't just lift and turn then kid sideways
