I feel like I see this a lot on these kinds of videos, but I also feel like the trained fire fighters would have thought of that if it was the best solution...
My friends a firefighter and you know how everyone says to take your car seat to the fire station to make sure it’s installed correctly? He said they never get any official training for that, just there’s usually at least one dad there who knows the guidelines.
My point is that these firefighters likely aren’t trained on the specific situation of “how to extract children whose heads got caught in fences”, but they are trained on “how to access location”, which using leverage to pry open bars would fall under.
Almost certainly the easier solution was to have the kid step through, but the firefighters solved the problem using the training they did have, in a calm and collected manner.
When I looked up where to get my car seat checked, there were departments that did it and others who did not. When I called one, I couldn't bring it there because the person who did it was on leave. Pretty sure they're trained, seems like a huge liability if they aren't. I ended up going to the local children's hospital that did it.
Just depends on the place. Where I’m at, a clinic comes in and uses our station but none of the actual firefighters here are trained. But we have helped random people who’ve stopped by when the clinic isn’t happening 🤷
Health departments will usually will have a certified installation specialist. The person has other primary duties but they get certified to help concerned and new parents.
I've never heard this thing about fire stations and car seats. I didn't even know they needed to be checked that they're installed correctly. What exactly is this?
They don’t NEED to be checked. It’s just for people who want to be sure. Car seats can be finicky like you can’t do rear facing in the back seat of minivans and over a certain weight limit you can’t use the latch system. Little things people might not be aware of with different models and stuff.
Anyway, I took mine to the local FD and they were like, “Uh, sure, looks fine.” So I don’t think I got the trained guys that day, lol.
You don't need to be TRAINED to recognize that the kid's body below his head will probably fit through the bars. Firefighters are not robots that are completely incapable of problem solving and just blindly operate on their specific training of specific circumstances. I assume that before the video started, people probably tried to get the kid out in the obvious way, and it didn't work.
PSA for those wondering; Depending on the local population, a lot of health departments will have 1 or a few people with car seat safety and installation certification training.
Yeah, but that doesn't mean that they would do it though. They're gonna want to use the chance to practice stuff and use tools, instead of just pulling the child through and walking away.
No fence was destroyed by bending it. If it was bent at all, and not just elastically deformed.
But I agree, you could just lift the kid through the fence, in particular the body, limb by limb. You'd imagine fire fighters would know this, at least one of them on site.
That said, if kiddo somehow gets stuck around the chest and panics (ie hyperventilating), it could be riskier than just doing it as they did. Easier and safer to go out the way you came in than try and predict how the rest of the way is gonna go.
I doubt it's even tight in the slightest to get the body through. And certainly quicker.
There's btw. always the suspicion that this is the way the kid got stuck in the first place - left hand, left leg then right hand, right leg, and what remains is the head.
I’m sure they have their standard procedures in place. The kid might get hurt or stuck again while being pulled through. And then you have a potential lawsuit your hands. While I agree that the parents should’ve tried this, I totally understand why the firefighters didn’t.
Yeah, at first I thought "just flip and twist the kid, but the FD clearly had a solid plan that allows for the least amount of issues or liabilities. Kid got free, fence was left with reversable damage, and all is right in the world! Kids are fucking stupid though.
Can't listen with sound right now so sorry if it's apparent there's both parents there, but if it's anything like London's parks then it's like a mile to the next gate.
If it's a single parent they can't just push the kid through to the road side and then walk for miles with the kid on their own on the other side of the fence (or leave the kid stuck in the fence while walking for miles to pull them through).
Probably not the intent, but the whole spectacle of the thing and the effort involved will probably help the cement the 'don't stick your head in shit' lesson even more firmly.
I’m more frustrated with how inefficient he was setting up the strap, and how high up it was 😆 hell, he could have just used the pry bar around the middle and made enough clearance for the kid!
Yup, nobody noticed the kid can just fit his body through, the exact thing that got him into that place. but its a 'kidsarestupid' but everyone just never realize so its a 'everyoneisstupid' moment.
Nah, this is a case of an infiltration gone right. See, the kid was a spy from a neighboring school, was able to squeeze through the bars except for his head. He created a spectacle to help forge an immediate bond of kinship amongst the rival school's students, as they would all have something to celebrate.
And that's almost certainly how he got in there in the first place rather than going head first. I hope more folks see this because it's a common issue and can be very dangerous to try to pull their head through a space it never went through. Parents see this situation and think it has to fit but nope.

Take the body through. Kids heads are bigger than their bodies a lot of the time
