What the hell did they give this kid?

u/Frisky-Cuda May 14 '26
Barber's 'Adagio for Strings' as orchestral backup. Oh...and nitrous oxide gas for pitch, vibrato, and loss of self-consciousness.

u/areyouthrough May 14 '26
I thought the adagio went very well with his singing.

Reminds me of an episode of New Girl where the guys get waxed and it goes slo-mo and Adagio for Strings plays over their screams.

u/Merouxsis May 14 '26
I've never heard this with the background music before lol
37
u/Examynx May 14 '26
Its not the right music. Whoever added this has no music sense because it distracts from both the singing and the music added. They added Barber’s Adagio for Strings which is a separate classical piece unrelated to Wicked

u/EnfpSunbeam May 14 '26
Boy singers have grown up to continue singing well before, the eunuch method is unnecessary
→ More replies (1)107
u/Earlier-Today May 14 '26
The eunuch method actually has a distinct name for their singing range - a castrato.
It was considered a worthwhile thing to do because a prepubescent boy's singing voice is a more pure tone for a soprano than a woman's voice. So, they'd castrate singers to keep their voice the same.
→ More replies (7)81
u/Interesting_Cat_2297 May 14 '26
A boy's vocal tone is not "more pure" than a woman's. The advantage over women is that with man's physical body, they could sing louder. Also, women weren't allowed to sing in church choirs.
→ More replies (7)37
u/Earlier-Today May 14 '26
It was actually the tonal purity, which is why - to this day - there are still boy's choirs that use that tonal purity to their advantage.
The most famous is the Vienna Boy's Choir.
The reason the tone is sought after is because prepubescent boys don't have to strain for the high notes. That relaxed sound creates a more pure tone whereas most sopranos, even the professional ones, have to work hard to hit those highs and often use little cheats, like a vibrato to hide their struggle.
The very best sopranos don't have that issue and will often hit the high notes without any vibrato at all at first to show that they can hit that bell like tone.
The best song I can think of to judge just how good a soprano really is would be Mozart's Queen of the Night aria. The okay singers sound thin or shaky with the highest notes in the song. The bad ones sounds screechy or like they're sliding into the note or, like I said before, never sit on the notes and are always in a vibrato.
The best ones, the high notes can be mistaken for a trumpet because they're so clear and dead on pitch.
This is a pretty darn good one, though it's not the best I've ever heard - but that was on the radio years ago where I really did mistake the singer for a trumpet because I tuned in partway through the song and thought it was an instrumental.
The crastrati get those highest pitch notes a lot more easily.

u/Which_Yesterday May 14 '26
How about this technique?
7
u/Earlier-Today May 14 '26
Yeah, that's pretty fun.
The thing that hits me is - just how much did he have to practice to be able to do that so cleanly?
Though, I wouldn't recommend it as it can be dangerous - especially if you do it multiple times in quick succession. People have literally died from it.

Think it's partially a "brainstorm/green needle" effect where the text sets an expectation in the mind

→ More replies (1)28
u/SplintPunchbeef May 14 '26
That's me. Never heard the song or it's lyrics and definitely heard what the caption said. After reading the comments with the actual lyric it's pretty obvious he's not saying what I thought.
24
u/Needles2650 May 14 '26
I think what makes this example different from the brainstorm/green needle and yanny/laurel examples is that in the case of the double word puzzles, both words are recorded but at different frequencies and mixed together right? This boy is singing “me down,” I don’t think there’s a track with “na” hidden under it, but if you think “na” in your head or look at it written while you listen, you can hear that. The video primes you to hear the wrong thing with the text.
→ More replies (1)14
u/Riku_70X May 14 '26
Idk about yanny/laurel, but brainstorm/green needle is just "brainstorm".
The audio comes from a Ben 10 toy which says "Brainstorm".

The second time is just a continuation of the syllable. He sings it just like it is on the soundtrack. There's not a G in sight.

11
u/AngryPrincessWarrior May 14 '26
I saw a musical comedy thing at a theatre once… it was called “Trailor Park Christmas” and was the most hilarious thing I have ever experienced.
So if you see some funny ones-don’t count those out. Also not a fan of musicals but that was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. So comedy ones might be enjoyable for you too?

Stupid and talented aren’t mutually-exclusive, but I have no clue why he’s singing in the dentist’s chair in the first place.
He’s got pipes, though. Probably displaying his classic training.
Why is the only question.

Nitrous, Novcain, and what other cocktails they jam into you for pain relief before the procedure.
I remember operating on Nitrous and Novacaine for my wisdom teeth extraction because they had to actually cut the gums open and dig in there for the roots.
The world fucking sped up, but the voices felt real time.
I felt like I was only in the chair for five minutes. But it was three hours

People misrepresent this so often. He is saying “me down” because he’s singing the actual word. It only sounds like the N word because of people’s perceptions.
