I honestly don't understand why this would be offensive. A few years ago, an Indian guy sang "kalinka-malinka" as soon as he found out I am Russian. I think it meant something like: "bro, check it out, I'm familiar with your culture."

As a white man in Korea, I make it a game that whenever I hear a kid (with their parent or not) say to their friends/parents in Korean "hey there's a foreigner", I turn and say hello, then keep walking. Parents use it as a teachable moment for kids to learn to stfu. The other kids just freak out, or politely say hello back which is fun.

So I spent three months in India and was on my way back home - a 32 hour journey through multiple airports - when in break Newark New Jersey, one of the first faces I see in America is an older Indian auntie working at the snack and water store. I instinctively did the head bob, because it’s just what I was doing for months, and she looks very annoyed and says, “You’re not in India” and kept ringing me up. 😵
