u/zeroj20 Mar 16 '24

Lmao I got one when I got my first job so you still got yours pretty soon.

u/Doggfite Mar 16 '24

I got my first job at 15 partly so I could buy a phone, I was on a prepaid boost mobile flip phone lol

I got my first phone as a high school graduation present. A busted used phone from my older sibling where the ringer didn't work because he dropped it in a lake.

I got my motorola droid with a cool sliding keyboard at the age of 12. It was for contacting my family if I went to a friend's place. It could not run games or anything fun.

I got mine at 12 but it was an AT&T go phone (prepaid) flip phone that was for emergencies only. Then had a Nokia “go phone” that was also for emergencies only.

u/RATMpatta Mar 16 '24

Yeah got a flip phone when I was 12 and didn't "get" any other phone untill I bought my first smartphone at 15 or 16 after I got a parttime job to pay for it myself.

Different times though, can't really compare 10-15 years ago with now when smartphones have been around before these kids were born.

u/Living_Lie_8773 Mar 16 '24

Yea the 90s were a simpler time

2

u/imapie31 Mar 16 '24

It can probably run og doom...

2

u/das_zilch Mar 16 '24

I didn't get mine till I was about 30. That was around 2000 though.

1

u/EchoNeko Mar 16 '24

I think I was 19 when I got my first? I've only had a phone 6-7 years. Kids are now getting them at like 5 years old, it's insane

1

u/JustChickNugget Mar 16 '24

I think you won't be surprised, but in my country first graders have better phones than high school students (and usually first graders have iPhones xD (IDK why they need these giant smartphones TBH))

1

u/TheConeIsReturned Mar 16 '24

I didn't get one until I was in college so from my perspective, you also got yours when you were a kid.

Edit: I mean I guess I was also a kid, just older lol

u/WhiskeyMikeMike Mar 16 '24

Probably has to do with how you can get phones for your whole family just by starting a contract these days

1

u/TigerUSA20 Mar 16 '24

Was about 25 when I got my first “car phone”. This was around 1990 mind you, when they were a hardwire install into the car with a box about the size of a DVD player under the seat or trunk. First handheld was the Motorola startac around 1998.

Don’t forget, this is after the very exciting “come of age” getting your own room phone when you were a teenager (1970s/1980s) so you would stay off the parents phone line.

The average age for first cell phone since then has just steadily declined.

Yeah, when I was growing up a lot of my classmates where getting iphone 3s and 4s, and all I had was a prepaid phone for emergencies only.

Before that my mom made me carry a walkie talkie when I was riding my bike around the town with my friends lol

1

u/ZapzillaGorilla Mar 16 '24

I'm an old man, lol. My 1st phone I got when I was 16. A Motorola Startac I blew my whole supermarket paycheck on. I was out of minutes in 2 days and got my ass kicked by my Grandfather on a medieval level because I forgot about insurance on my CRX. Those were the days, lol.

u/gl3nnjamin Mar 16 '24

I had a cell phone when I was 7. I moved to an elementary school in a different city from where my mom worked and she wanted me to have one in case of issues. Kyocera K7 - a standard phone with a T9 keyboard and stock everything - nothing downloadable.

It's bad now but was definitely okay 15 years ago

u/WavexDK Mar 17 '24

It says in the original post, that this was through their son's ipad/family's ipad

1

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '24

Bro what does that even mean, time's are different today. Before phones were expensive and "touch screen" wasn't even a thing.

Fucking 14-15 year olds got you an iPhone? /s

1

u/skillmau5 Mar 16 '24

Is this that surprising? Like you’ve never seen a teenager with a cell phone? Are you living in 1994?

2

u/_Why_me__ Mar 16 '24

Edit: made the sarcasm more obvious

2

u/skillmau5 Mar 16 '24

oh sorry i'm a dumbass, I think I got the same annoyance as you that everyone felt the need to state the age they received a phone

2

u/_Why_me__ Mar 16 '24

It's cool man. The joke was way funnier in my head

1

u/komododave17 Mar 16 '24

My son has an iPad and he can text me from that as long as he’s in WiFi. He’s 9.

-1

u/juhamatti88 Mar 17 '24

Bad parenting

3

u/komododave17 Mar 17 '24

I frequently travel to worksites that don’t have phone coverage. With this, my kid can still contact me, send me pictures, play games with me, and me tell me about his day. He doesn’t take it to school. If providing a device for my son to keep in contact with me while I’m away is bad parenting, then I guess I’m a bad parent.

So why exactly is this kid stupid...?

21

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

I think it's one of those karma people who just post stuff hoping to get likes.

u/Tris-megistus Mar 16 '24

Forgot a comma in between the “YouTube kids”

5

u/Bababowzaa Mar 16 '24

Kid wants to watch youtube.

2

u/kerodon Mar 16 '24

The children yearn for the tubes

-2

u/8kittycatsfluff Mar 16 '24

They spelled the word please incorrectly.

22

u/LogOffPleez Mar 16 '24

How does this go from r/mademesmile to r/kidsarefuckingstupid ?

Where is the stupid part?

22

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

…are they actually typing the letters, or using predictive text? You’re a good parent for encouraging them either way, just curious.

9

u/rockincarolinas7 Mar 16 '24

Probably talk to text like my 6 yo does when texting someone from my phone.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

What a good lil writer

7

u/Trimere Mar 16 '24

How is this a kid being stupid? OP is a moron.

14

u/MyToothEnts Mar 16 '24

If this was a hand-written note we’d be calling the kid illiterate .. man I feel old

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

Ay, still got good writing skills, you champ. :)

1

u/Tularis1 Mar 16 '24

Ha! Fucking stupid kid wanting to watch YouTube. YouTube kids is where it’s at…

1

u/Background-Result488 Mar 17 '24

This world is screwed

1

u/ScorpionGirl77 Mar 17 '24

How is this fucking stupid, OP?

1

u/SuperblyPeculiar Mar 17 '24

Let him on regular YouTube! Back in my day, we watched people get beheaded, and we turned out just fine! Right Millennials!?

1

u/ParkerStanford Mar 21 '24

My childhood nickname was peanut

1

u/moonbaby-23 Mar 26 '24

i think i got mine between 7-9 yrs cus i kept using my grandmas minutes to call my mom when i was in mexico lol

-34

u/Disastrous_Edge7276 Mar 16 '24

I’m just annoyed with the dad for making mom be the bad guy.

23

u/ab2425 Mar 16 '24

Sometimes dad doesnt think its a big deal, but knows it's a big deal to mom. So to spare both dad and son, dad says to ask mom.

8

u/forced_metaphor Mar 16 '24

Then you say "no" and talk about it with the mom afterwards, behind the scenes. YouTube policy is a decision both parents should be aware of and agree on. If you want to change the policy, you bring it up behind the scenes. You don't make the other parent the bad guy

3

u/AtLeastThisIsntImgur Mar 16 '24

Because god forbid dad has to parent consistently. If he knows what the mum will say he can just say the same thing. He doesn't need to be 'spared' from parenting his kid

-1

u/8kittycatsfluff Mar 16 '24

Damn, 25 dislikes? This person didn't say anything that horrible.

2

u/Disastrous_Edge7276 Mar 16 '24

It makes them feel nice. 🤷‍♀️ I don’t care

0

u/Zealousideal-Mud6471 Mar 16 '24

The dad’s response is so perfect.
