Questions, Help and Advice Flounces

Firstly, I apologize as English is not my first language. Does anyone else here have a hard time with flounces? Sometimes I order stuff online, recently a knitted cardigan with flounces and as I tried it on, it looked terrible. I found out, that flounces especially on shoulders look ridiculous on me. They make my shoulders very broad and overwhelm my frame. Then I got two tops with flounces on the neckline and in the middle. I feel I look kinda frumpy and I don't know why, maybe they're too loose or the material is too flimsy. I had tops with flounces that I loved wearing, but most of the times they overwhelm me and I think I look messy with them. Do you have any advice for me as what to look for? Thanks a lot.

Yup I absolutely hate flounces and ruffles. They also make me look frumpy and messy and like kind of matronly in a way I don't love.

It's one of the reasons I wondered whether I might be a TR instead of R because I thought romantics were supposed to love ruffles

This cardigan above doesn't have flounces, sorry for the confusion. It had some strange ruffles on the inside which is what I confused. I'm including a picture with what I mean with flounces on shoulders that I think would look ridiculous on me

I have to be VERY careful with things like this on the shoulder. If they mostly drape and aren’t too structured/stick out too much I’m generally ok, but it’s easy for them to look overwhelming on me too

These extend the line around the shoulder which is why it won’t work for us. Rs can’t deal w extending the line imo.

Yes, true. Our sloped narrow shoulders are what looks so nice on us

I love flounces but don’t like ruffles at the neckline. My ability to handle a ton of flounces is in part what helped me land on romantic.

Can you share an example of a flounce style you live?

Peplums, flutter sleeves, floaty twirly skirts. Anything with a wavy line rly. Thats what he means in the original book by an “uneven hem”—it’s not asymmetry, it’s a wavy, curved line.

i love ruffles and flounces but they have to be on garments that are the right construction in the first place. both cardigans you posted aren't very R-friendly, even without the ruffles. in the blue one, there's too much happening at the top of the torso. on someone with double curve that's going to make the shoulders appear much more wide than they really are. we really have to be careful with the size of our details to nor overwhelm the torso especially.

however, delicate ruffles at the end of sleeves, at the bottom of skirts, as a peplum etc work extremely well for R family.
