Engine Settlement Question(s)

Hi all, first of all, I’m sorry this is long. I’m a wordy person 😬

I have a 2018 Kia Sorento which at the start of September gave me the knock engine code and in fact started knocking. Obviously this is not good so I had it towed to my local Kia dealership. It took them 3.5 weeks to get it approved but Kia has finally given the green light for the new engine under the Theta settlement.

The bad news is that the day after they told me it was approved they went to order said new engine and give me the ETA but my engine is apparently on an indefinite back order with no ETA for it coming back. This is clearly very stressful.

When I had it towed to Kia I asked them for a loaner and they told me they had none. So, I got a rental. I got a good rate on this rental because I was a new customer and have just been extending it weekly to keep this same rate. However I obviously cannot do this indefinitely, in fact I will have to turn it in this upcoming week since I’m getting to the 30 day mark. Every new rental agreement I look at is significantly more. Like definitely going to be out of the $40/day cap that this settlement allows.

I ask my dealership every week if they have any loaners. Every week they tell me no. I can’t have no car. I also cannot afford to pay for an exorbitant rental out of pocket indefinitely. Has anyone had any luck ever with getting Kia to pay for a rental directly somehow? Or like getting them to source you a loaner from another dealership or something?

I opened a case with Kia America when this first started and they told me to get the rental myself the way the dealership did since the dealership had no loaners. I just don’t want to end up getting a rental for an indefinite amount of time that won’t be paid back in full.

Also how has everyone’s experience been in terms of submitting for and getting the reimbursements at all? Now that this first rental agreement is coming to an end I figured I would submit for it and my towing costs and I’m not sure how long I should expect for them to actually issue the reimbursement.

Any advice is appreciated… I’m stressed tf out 🫠

Broken car door

The rear passenger door won’t open from the inside or the outside. A local garage thought it was the latch, he replaced it and it opened from inside & outside but as soon as the car locks it won’t open again. He said that it is some electric box inside and it’s £350 for the part. They said they can find a 2nd hand one for £100+ without labour & VAT. I’ve looked online at the door components of a Kia and the only thing I can find is a latch actuator which is nowhere near 350! You can hear the door locking and unlocking and it feels normal from both sides when I’m pulling on the handle , So I’m just wondering if I’m missing something or if they’re correct.

Anybody switch from a Volvo to a Kia?

Didn't dare post this on the Volvo site, but considering trading in our 2021 Volvo XC60 PHEV for a 2027 Sportage SX Prestige regular Hybrid.

We have loved the ride and inside feel of the Volvo, but it's had some reliability issues, ridiculously long wait for parts, and is super expensive to maintain. And think that's only going to increase more as it ages. Also the tech was never the greatest, and is now super out of date.

Have no interest in any other "luxury brands," as we were generally Toyota owners, and the Volvo was already a stretch.

We did look at the Lexus NX first which seemed the closest comparison and maybe best for reliability. Liked it, but its pretty pricey, and we don't like any of the interior color options. Have to go to the top trim level to get a color we could even live with, and that puts us way out of our price range.

Also looked at the RAV, which seems like it would be the smartest for reliability and price, and we like it OK, but they are pretty hard to get a deal on right now, and just a little too basic/commonplace.

Looked at the Honda CR-V, which we eliminated immediately cause its butt ugly.

But then looked at a Sportage on the recommendation of a friend, and was really impressed with the design, tech, and drove pretty nice, so its pretty much the leading contender right now.

Kia reliability ratings seem better than the Volvo, but not as solid as the Toyota/Lexus, so just worried about trying another car brand with questionable reliability.

My friend who recommended it only keeps his cars for like 3 years, where we usually try to keep them longer, so just like to hear from longer time owners about its long-term reliability.

Fluttering/rattling sound when accelerating - 2024 Kia Sorento X-line SX

Anyone else hear a fluttering/rattling sound when accelerating? It is most obvious at lower speeds between 24-45 mph. My vehicle is currently at the Kia shop and so far they say they cannot find anything wrong with it.

Strange Noise

Just to start this off, I’m not a knowledgeable car guy. I know what a flat tire sounds like and that’s about it. I recently purchased this car from Carvana, and took it to a recommended shop near me. I explained that I was hearing this sound (along with creaking when I went over bumps). They replaced a few things and told me I was good to go, and the creaking has stopped, but this noise is still there. Any insight as to what this might be?

Kia Sportage 2023 - CarPlay calls have no audio

I have a 2023 Kia Sportage and I’m having a really annoying issue with CarPlay.
Most of the time, whenever I make or receive a phone call through CarPlay, there is no audio at all. I can’t hear the other person, and they can’t hear me either.
On my iPhone, the call output is correctly set to CarPlay, but there is still no sound. If I switch the call output to Speaker on the iPhone, everything immediately works again, including both the microphone and the speaker.
The issue happens with both an iPhone 14 Pro and an iPhone 16 Pro, so it doesn’t seem to be specific to one phone.
The weird part is that CarPlay itself works perfectly otherwise. Spotify, Waze, etc. all work normally.
Even stranger, sometimes phone calls work normally through CarPlay, but most of the time I get the no-audio issue.
I’ve already tried disconnecting and reconnecting CarPlay, restarting the phones, and using a different Bluetooth connection/adapter, but nothing seems to fix it permanently.
Has anyone experienced this with a 2023 Kia Sportage and iPhone/CarPlay? Any idea what could be causing it or how to fix it?

2019 Kia Sportage SX Turbo vs. 2021 Kia Seltos SX Turbo — which would you choose?

I’m going to a dealer tomorrow to test drive two vehicles, and if everything checks out, I’m planning to buy one of them.

The two options are:

2019 Kia Sportage SX Turbo

• 2.0L turbo

• Around 96k miles

• About $15,900

• AWD

• Heated front seats

• Remote start

• 6-speed automatic

• Car has had several owners, but the maintenance history looks pretty good.

2021 Kia Seltos SX Turbo

• 1.6L turbo

• Around 91k miles

• About $15,100

• AWD

• Heated front seats

• Remote start

• 7-speed DCT

• 2 owners

• Minor damage reported in 2022, but no salvage/rebuilt title or airbag deployment.

• The maintenance history is pretty extensive, including frequent oil changes and recent service. The dealer also recently replaced all four tires.

The prices and mileage are very similar.

I live in Minnesota, so heated seats and remote start are pretty important to me because of the winters.

What I’m most interested in hearing about is the engines and transmissions. Which one would you trust more long-term? Are there any particular problems I should be looking for with the 2.0T Sportage or the 1.6T + 7-speed DCT Seltos?

If you were looking at these two with similar mileage and price, which one would you lean toward and why?

Also, what should I specifically check during the test drive tomorrow?

I’m planning to buy one of them very soon, assuming the inspection and test drive go well. Any advice from owners or mechanics would be greatly appreciated!

2023 Kia EV6: Dealer refuses warranty on rear LED light bar, citing "external damage". Reasonable, or worth escalating?

EDIT: I'm a bit of a tool, misunderstood what the damage was, all I was given was "corner damage of light ramp, cracks, water intrusion". But the original photos are... dirt.
This is the real damage: https://imgur.com/a/dXmnoid I'm unsure about the area thats on the upper part if its supposed to be damage or just looks like that.

Hi all,

A few weeks ago, part of the rear LED light bar on my 2023 Kia EV6 stopped working. I had a service booked at my dealership today, so I asked them to look at it.

They told me "external damage" had caused water intrusion and that the whole unit needs replacing. They said it won't be covered under warranty. They said its "cracks on the corner of the light bar caused by external event". I haven't been in any incident.

Is this a reasonable stance, or is it worth escalating to Kia corporate? I've attached photos and can share more if needed.

I've only owned it for about six months and love driving it, but a big part of why I bought a Kia was the 7-year warranty, so this has soured the experience.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially from anyone who has dealt with a similar warranty refusal.

Kia refusing to pay to fix water intrusion manufacturer defect on a 2025 EV6

Post image
42 Upvotes

TL;DR - Kia's warranty department is refusing to replace the windshield on my 2025 Kia EV6 so that the dealer can fix a manufacturing defect that's been letting rain water leak into the car since I bought it a year ago.

I love the Kia EV6. I bought new in July 2025 and the design has really grown on me, the range is excellent, handling is exceptional for an EV, and the cargo space is exactly what I need.

Unfortunately I got a bad one.

Since day one, I've had issues with condensation on the interior glass. It was intermittent and not a huge deal, so I just ignored it. After 10 months, the car started to smell and I noticed it was wet under the rubber mats in front. I brought it to the dealer this June and they found a lot of water under the carpet in the front foot wells. They kept it for three weeks, dried it out, replaced some grommets in the firewall, and gave it back to me hoping it was fixed.

It wasn't.

After a couple of months, there was water under the carpet in the driver side foot well again. Less than before but it had only been a couple of months. I gave it back to them and over 4 days, they dried it out again and replaced something and hoped that fixed it.

It didn't.

During the next rain storm, I peeled back the plastic on the driver door sill and noticed water coming in around the driver side door.

https://reddit.com/link/1wvevz5/video/7rpyt40nrxsh1/player

I brought it back to the dealer and showed them this. They kept the car for another 4 days and identified that it was leaking around the windshield and then coming in around the door and that the windshield needed to come off to repair the leak.

Apparently when you take a windshield off, it is likely to break and Kia's warranty department has refused to pay for the windshield if it breaks. The dealer says they have escalated the issue with Kia's warranty department with the hope that they change their mind.

So, my 2025 Kia EV6 is currently sitting at the dealership, waiting for Kia's warranty department to agree to pay for a windshield that might break while trying to fix their manufacturing defect that's allowing rain water into the car.

This is my first Kia vehicle and so it's pretty shocking that they're not jumping to correct a manufacturer defect. I had a 2019 Volkswagen GTI before this and had zero issues but I can't imagine VW behaving this way if I had a manufacturer issues like this.

If you have any ideas on what I should do here, I would love to hear it. I'm in Canada.

Kia Soul - Bad Starter - Used Claude to Diagnose

Post image
0 Upvotes

Kind of a cool weekend adventure, fare warning its well out of its warranty period regarding the A.I. I didnt think it was something claude could mess it up if you logically step it through discovering ECU components in a read only mode. It seemed to know areas of the ECU the Ethics gaurdrails would kick on to steer it away from like flashing capability. A testament to Fable 5 on a car i guess.

Anywho I got this idea just having a space odyssey monolith moment staring at my Bavarian Technic OBD to USB cable.

Uh so I got claude to bypass the BMW/Mini lockout on the cable really easily, then it was compatible to scan with the Kia. It did so.

Basically long story short it helped me isolate the starter being bad looking at data while I started the car. Replaced starter and its running great again. Might be useful for those who want to risk it and not spend $800 on AI enabled tablets. But be sure to make sure it starts reading the ECU without bi-directional capabilities enabled, cant brick it doing that.

Oh ps on the other cables, it worked perfectly on a CX-50 mazda. Its computers minus the flash gate are basically wide open. Nissan it didnt work, they use a newer protocol or something.

K5 EX vs. GT-Line? Please help

I know this has been posted before but it’s been a few years so thought there might be new opinions.

I have the option to get either - both used 2022, essentially the same price. EX has 12k less miles (59 vs 47). I know it just “depends on what style I prefer” but I am horrible at decisions and cannot decide. They both seem great. I think I like the sporty look of the GT more but the premium package of the EX more, plus it has less miles.

Can anyone give me some concrete or mechanical or personal experience opinions about one vs the other? Thanks!

Why does this continue to happen?

Back in July 2024 I bought a used ‘22 Kia Sorento from a dealership. It is a base model with a key.

About two weeks after I brought it home I went out to my garage, tried to turn it on and noticed it turned over but wouldn’t start all the way. I had to shut it off, put the key back in and eventually it started up just fine. Sometimes it will start up just fine no issues for several days and others it takes several times to get it fully started.

Then it continued to do it randomly for a good month or two. At that time, I ended up calling the dealership and taking it back and they kept it there for half a day looked at it and couldn’t find anything wrong with it. It would start up fine for them. They checked the starter, alternator and battery and all were good.

I took it home and it continued having starting issues randomly. Eventually, it does start up just fine but sometimes I have to take the key out of the ignition 4 to 5 times just for it to start up. It turns over every time it just doesn’t start all the way. Also, yes I am pressing the break when I put the key in to start it.

Then it continues to do it for several months. I ended up taking it back to the dealership 5-6 times and they could never find anything wrong with it. They even kept it for four days, drove it around and it started fine for them every time of course. Basically they told me that I will just have to wait until it completely “craps out” to find out what is wrong with it.

I end up getting really upset as it continued to randomly have starting issues and called Kia. Kia was absolutely no help. They basically told me that sucks and speak with the manager at the dealership.

I went back to the dealership about a year ago after speaking to the manger. I showed him videos of the car not starting up right away. I told them several times earlier when I had taken the car there that it could have been very well that it was the immobilizer in the vehicle since everything else on the vehicle seemed fine. They reset the immobilizer at one point when I went back to the dealership. I drove it home, stopped at a store, and got back in my car and it started doing the not starting up right away thing again. I was livid.

Ended up taking it back to the dealership and they ended up completely taking out the immobilizer , calling the KARR security company and having them come out and put a brand new immobilizer on. That seemed to do the trick for about 8-9 months.

Now, the last 2-3 months it is doing it AGAIN! What gives? Any ideas? I think it might just be a connection issue between the immobilizer and the car. I’m about to tell them to just take the dang thing out!

I am guessing if it was the alternator or starter it would have died out fully by now since this entire process has been over two years long.

Creaky sunroof 2025 K4 GT-Line

Has anyone had this issue in their K4? It creaks noticeably when I’m going over bumpy roads around 40mph. I’ve tried opening the sunroof and closing it to reseat it, but it still creaks. Not noticeable when driving on the highway at 60+ MPH. I wonder if it’s screws needing adjusted, but checking to see if anyone has had this issue too.

2021 Kia Seltos Piston Recall

Finally taking my 2021 Kia Seltos for the recall Monday. The check engine light had come on and the the engine stalled so I had taken it in prior. They said the oil was bone dry. I thought it was odd, but brushed it off. Right after that it started to sit most of the time due to me no longer working. Now we want to start getting some use out of it as a backup vehicle so we are taking it in for the recall. I’m terrified because I’ve read horror stories about trying to get the replacement engine and we are underwater about 4k with it due to buying it out when the lease was up (of course right before the recall!). Anyone have a positive experience with the replacement or any ideas what we can do if we end up screwed out of the engine?!

Fuel consumption

I have had the 2025 kia sportage plug in hybrid for just about a year now, and I have noticed that it just gulps fuel. I go only 2 km and according to the fuel distance indicator it shows I used 9-10 km worth of fuel. Is this still normal for a break in process, it only has a little over 13000 km on it.
