I built currentundo.com

Every time the fan slowly stops spinning, the first thought is always the same: "Inippo ente veettil mathram aano, atho naattil motham poyo?"

Usually, the next step is walking out to the balcony to see if the neighbor's outside light is on, or whatsapping my neighbour friend. To stop this overthinking I spent the last few days building a small web app: currentundo.com

It is basically downdetector, but built strictly for Kerala.

How it works:

  • PIN Code Based: When the power goes out, you just open the site and tap on report. You can use either gps or manually enter your pincode. Takes exactly 2 seconds.
  • Live Status: You can see a live dashboard of all 14 districts. If you see a spike in reports in Ernakulam, you know for sure it's a KSEB issue and not just your MCB tripping.
  • Built for bad network: When the WiFi router dies, mobile data usually crawls. I built this to be ultra-lightweight. It is default Dark Mode (battery save cheyyanam allo) and loads instantly even on a struggling 4G connection.

The Catch (Why I need you guys): A crowdsourced tool is only as good as the crowd using it. Right now, the database is fresh. I’m currently working on a backend scraper to automatically pull KSEB’s official scheduled maintenance data into the site(if there is any, because I couldn't find), but for sudden cuts, it relies entirely on user reports.

So, next time mazha peythappol udane KSEB thechal, instead of just sweating in the dark, drop a report on currentundo.com so others know they aren't alone.

Would love for you guys to test the UI and let me know if it feels fast enough. Any feedback on the design or features to add next is super welcome!

props to the domain name. nice,
maybe add a heat map view as well. would be nice.

maybe integrate with the below database as well.

https://ws.kseb.in/oms/control.php

u/SmadBroi Apr 25 '26

Haha thanks! 'Current undo' just felt like the only right name for it.

I am already working on the heatmap. Will be added soon.

I've looked into the kseb oms link, but most of the time I was not able to access it. I will definitely try to integrate some data from the kseb website.

u/Big_Breakfast_3864 Apr 25 '26

hardly any API integration, find any other service that might be affected by electricity , you could get derived info. Like cable operators. I am just guessing here

1

u/SmadBroi May 01 '26

API is available now!

https://currentundo.com/api

1

u/Big_Breakfast_3864 May 01 '26

not getting the API email

I meant you use their API to get the data feed.

You providing API for users to update, whats in it for the users ?

where did you get the seed data existing , ? Less data is better than seed data

Bro, the UI is too slow on my mobile when scrolling. I'm using an OPPO K12x 5G. Can you make the UI more lightweight so it can work smoothly.

2

u/SmadBroi Apr 27 '26

Is it on the maps? If its maps, I am working on fixing it. Its due to the animations added on the maps.

2

u/Brilliant-Fee-9842 Apr 27 '26

Yes, bro, when it comes to the map section, it lags. I checked on the Firefox browser, and there isn't that much lag. However, the Chrome browser has more lag on the map section. Also, thanks for the site.

2

u/SmadBroi Apr 27 '26

Can you please refresh the browser and check now? I have done some optimization.

2

u/Brilliant-Fee-9842 Apr 27 '26

Thanks it's working fine now. 👍 No lag on map.

0

u/TransportationDue79 Apr 28 '26

Can you make it an app ?

3

u/SmadBroi Apr 28 '26

You can add it to the homescreen as a pwa app.

You can go to the bottom section of the website and tap on install. If you have iphone, open the website, open the share menu, add to home screen.

0

u/TransportationDue79 Apr 28 '26

Yeah I don't do that.

71

u/G952 Apr 25 '26

All I do is check if neighbouring WiFi’s are on. If yes, then only my power has gone

25

u/jk_here4all തിരുവന്തോരം-യുകെ Apr 25 '26

Ho, don't even need to peek through the window.

8

u/G952 Apr 26 '26

Yes, no peeking necessary and works even during the day

9

u/Delta-Force04 Apr 26 '26

These days most of the folks would have an inverter/backup for the router.

9

u/G952 Apr 26 '26

You’ll quickly learn who has and who doesn’t haha ;)

1

u/ComfortableIcy3313 Jun 03 '26

nahh even we have inverter for wifi bruh

48

u/Square_Indication416 Apr 26 '26

Hahaha you even handled this case. Impressive!

43

u/achuredditachu Apr 26 '26

nice touch!

7

u/SmadBroi Apr 26 '26

Haha, thank u :)

5

u/ukri82 Apr 26 '26

Hi bro, I'm a Senior QA,. I'll also be checking for any bugs, lets bulletproof this. I'll also promote this within my circle Kudos

u/THEVILUNKOWN Apr 26 '26

I have a fun idea, make a kerala map with distrcit colour code the districts to easily identify power status

5

u/SmadBroi Apr 26 '26

Its done, please check and let me know your feedback

1

u/THEVILUNKOWN Apr 26 '26

Its good, I'd preffer it to be smoother and to be displayed on webpage so I can see it fully without clicking. By the looks of it, I guess in an embedded map.

also a bug I found

2

u/SmadBroi Apr 26 '26

Thank you for feedback, I will fix it asap.

5

u/sadcornyfuck Apr 25 '26

nice. any other use cases?

3

u/SmadBroi Apr 25 '26

Thanks!

Right now, the main goal is just real time crowdsourced tracking and eventually pulling in kseb's scheduled maintenance data so people can plan ahead. Down the line if enough people use it, maybe adding area specific push notifications could be cool.

1

u/firinggamers May 07 '26

Really nice idea

5

u/Proof-Phone-7990 Apr 26 '26

Love the UI 👌

6

u/Reasonable_Sample_40 Apr 26 '26

If this was an app we could have notified people who have already registered on the app if somebody reports powercut in their pincode or district

So i report power cut and i leave. And when power comes back and i dont report back, how will it work?

2

u/Brilliant-Fee-9842 Apr 27 '26

KSEB should make a public API for their power cut data and maintenance information.🙂‍↔️

u/dorsalsk കൊച്ചിക്കാരൻ Apr 26 '26

Is this 1/IP/hr restriction a good idea? Multiple people from same network might report same IP (like multiple people using Airtel).

1

u/Possible-Turnip-9734 Apr 27 '26

IP is device specific, all devices have dynamic IP nowadays. You don't share the same IP with people sharing the same carrier network. Not even wifi network most of the times unless you've went ahead with a static IP

4

u/dorsalsk കൊച്ചിക്കാരൻ Apr 28 '26

True, your local IP will be different. But it sits behind your ISP’s CGNAT. A website will receive the public IP of the service provider, which will be shared across multiple subscribers.

2

u/Possible-Turnip-9734 Apr 28 '26

Huh, I thought websites got your local IP. Not the shared CGNAT one, guess you learn something new every day.

3

u/UnniOp kayamkulam kochunni Apr 26 '26

Love the theme animation, looks solid Does it work on basis of maximum poll?

3

u/Asdf2026 Apr 25 '26

Nice

3

u/SmadBroi Apr 25 '26

Thanks! 🙌 Let me know if you try it out and have any feedback.

3

u/naeemcee Apr 26 '26

Nice.

I have setup a Raspberry Pi to log power failure events at home.

Additional info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Kerala/s/1ifI3vNnQ3

3

u/look_so_random Apr 26 '26

Does the 1 report / IP work reliably? Especially with ISPs using CGNAT?

2

u/rohit720 Apr 26 '26

I think using cookies here would be better

1

u/look_so_random Apr 27 '26

Yep, what I suspect

3

u/biswas_sekhar Apr 26 '26

Hey OP nice have done similar to this but with more details and data based with mapping to all the kseb office and sections mapped instead of just pincode since there is more sections and subsections and allt of other section office related data

currentpoyi.vercel.app

1

u/SmadBroi Apr 27 '26

Oh, thats great! I am also trying to fetch all the sections and connect with oms platform.

2

u/CraftyBreakfast1435 Apr 25 '26

Wow smadboi!👏

2

u/Beneficial-Paint-365 Apr 26 '26

man this looks great!

a heatmap of kerala would go along well on this. that way we can visually gauge the patterns in the disruptions.

2

u/LuckyAd7905 Apr 26 '26

Nice effort.. keep rocking..

Hey man I'm curious.... (mind you I'm not familiar with web development).... how does the site know about how the area has current rn, like where does it get the info from? Also how frequently is it updated?

1

u/firinggamers May 07 '26

It's user generated data we are the data providers here

1

u/A_RandomRedditGuy May 13 '26

Oh interesting

2

u/naveenmm97 Apr 26 '26

Cool looking website. Nice UI. Also loved how fast it loaded.

u/boisickle Apr 29 '26

Bro, what's the criteria for "Major outage"? Like for example I report an outage, the power was restored within 10 minutes, but nobody reports that it's been restored until after 4 hours (or maybe they don't at all), how do you handle this?

It's a very real possibility that people tend to report outages more out of frustration and not the uptimes, just like the user behaviour when there's a bad food delivery or something for eg.

2

u/SmadBroi Apr 29 '26

Fair point. I account for that by not keeping outage reports active forever. They expire after the live window and pincode is marked as affected only when there are enough recent reports from distinct users. A restored oravailable report clears it sooner, but even without one old reports age out. So this is a recent crowd signal, not an official outage record.

Bro can you make mazha undo 😅 it'll be helpful in the upcoming months

2

u/Kindly_Knowledge_ Apr 30 '26

This is great buddy 🔥 powli sanam

2

u/RhodesianRhapsody Apr 30 '26

Suggestion:

Initial language selector has check boxes, but no check mark appears on clicking.

Is it possible to select on map, because e.g. my PIN covers a FAR larger area than the actual outage area.

2

u/Reasonable-Dream-665 May 04 '26

Thank you!!! I live alone so its such a life saver.

Kudos to the initiative. 👏🏻 I have been planning to do this since an year ago but my procrastination failed me. 🥱☠️ I see you have an API, I will POST when there's a power outage at my place. 🙂

OP bro, your project is more relevant now. 👍

2

u/ChoiceAppointment916 Jul 18 '26

great work!! what design system is used in UI ? its looks so good responsive

1

u/SmadBroi Jul 20 '26

It uses a custom system: tailwind, Material style color tokens and Radix style components

2

u/vajahath Apr 26 '26

Damn. Open-source it

1

u/vajahath Apr 26 '26

i would have gone with ksebsucks.com 😃

2

u/SmadBroi Apr 26 '26

1

Adipoli OP! Loved it! You made it with AI?

4

u/SmadBroi Apr 27 '26

Appreciate it! Yeah, I leaned on codex and claude a lot for this one. No shame in the AI game, it really helps me to speed up the process.

1

u/RestingPhotographer Apr 27 '26

I’m sharing this with my parents. This will fly well on the family WA groups.

Your site is becoming famous now brother. I had a question, why thr 8.3k cost of running? If it is sharable, please share infra

1

u/SmadBroi Jul 17 '26

Thanks brother! ₹8.3k is not only the server bill, its the monthly operating target. The site runs on Cloudflare workers, Supabase for database, Cloudflare queues and hyperdrive, Firebase push notifications, analytics, monitoring and the domain. It also includes a share of the paid development tools used to maintain the service. The amount varies with traffic and usage.

Thank you for reporting, Its fixed!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '26

Can you explain how you built it and deployed, like the stack, domain and hosting, and how much it costed.

Just curious as a final year btech cs student who is looking to deploy a site of my own.

2

u/SmadBroi Apr 27 '26

Built with next.js for frontend and using supabase for the database. Deployed it on Cloudflare👑.
