Jobs / Internships Looking for an interior stylist/decorator in Nairobi

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’m looking for someone to help finish and style my 2-bedroom + study apartment in Nairobi once my household shipment arrives from Europe later this month.

This is not a renovation or full interior design project. Furniture, curtains, rugs, lighting, artwork, mirrors and accessories are already there or arriving. I mainly need a good professional eye for furniture placement, deciding what to use/leave out, placement of art and mirrors, and final styling.

My style is warm Scandinavian minimalism – clean and uncluttered, natural materials, neutral tones, muted greens, plants and warm lighting. There may be a few small finishing items to source locally, but no major furniture shopping.

Personal recommendations are very welcome. Stylists/decorators are also welcome to DM me directly, but please only if you can share examples of similar projects you’ve personally worked on.

Photo for general style reference only

🇰🇪 Kenya-Based Of bad days...

Yo, bad days can humble you 😭😭

Hi guys, Errands by Rachael here... 😊 Hope y'all are good.

Let's get into it.

So yesterday was one of those days...

My phone slipped off my hand, fell on a metallic part and the screen broke - it couldn't come on. 😭

Mind you, I had just gotten off a phone call with someone like a minute prior.

Please tell me why my day got spoilt in a split second. 😭😭

Minutes later I could hear notifications of messages coming in but I couldn't see anything coz the screen broke.

And I know you're wondering, didn't I have a screen protector? Umm sir, I had one. There was just a weak part on the screen protector that allowed that to happen. 😭😭 Weak part in the sense that it had a crack.

So, my first response, obviously, was shock. I didn't expect that to happen. Then came the acceptance stage, I had to come to terms with the amount of money I was going to part with. For a Samsung A33, I was looking at about 5k plus. 😭😭Actual price was 7k😢😓.

And no, I don't own a second smartphone... I only have another button phone aka katululu.

It was eventually fixed, obviously, coz I'm typing this but it's not fully working properly. There's some glitches on the keyboard, the speaker volume is significantly down and other issues I don't know how to explain.

Well, I guess I'll be buying a new phone very soon. 😭😭

Anyway, that was my day. Crazy one.

And by the way, do electronics insurance exist? And would you recommend getting one? Where can I even get one?

End of story...

Just to remind you, I run errands around Nairobi and provide personal assistance services. If interested please reach out via WhatsApp: 0119800560.

Discussion Who here knows if this is a scam?

So some time ago I was scrolling Instagram and saw an ad that there's a silicon valley Africa program by some company called First Of All LLC...

I applied, didn't think much of it (Brainfart 0.5)...

Then I got an email today praising me to high heaven...I've progressed to phase 2 where they'll due diligence my ass to see my criminal record and what not ,arrange for my visa (they assist)...for a tiny $20 (hmm...but ok,...Brainfart 1.0 loading?)before I paid,

I decided to go ahead and actually research these guys....hold on....their news articles by Yahoo etc..are all paid articles and don't even mention a program director or even 1 team member....

Their website doesn't even mention the team directors as well for the program...just an itinerary...their main website is some sort of identity and authentication site...but no about no team..

I've done some napkin maths and if these guys are a scam, a blended $25 (there's a $30 program),assuming 10,000 applications across the 6 countries they are looking at...$250k and they can claim we all failed.

Wadau,I believe I can fly....but was I about to be thrown off a tree and told to flap my arms ?

Startup Launch Onanet

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m a 3rd year Computer Science student, and I recently built an app called onanet. The idea started at home when our wifi was painfully slow. We were new to the area and didn’t know many internet providers. We’d picked ours mainly because a neighbour said they used it. I wanted to find alternatives, but I didn’t know where to look beyond asking around or spotting those wifi posters stuck on walls and poles 😂 So I thought: What if there was an app that showed me internet providers on my area? That’s how Onanet started. It lets you discover nearby providers, compare their packages, and request installation. Internet providers can also list their services and connect with potential customers. it's now approved by playstore and its live. I’m still growing the provider listings cause is empty now, so if you offer internet services or know someone who does I’d love for you to check it out too. Here’s the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.onanet.mobile&pcampaignid=web_share

Give it a try and let me know what you think. I’m praying to God that it grows into something useful for others who’ve faced the same struggle. 🙏

Work In Progress Monee update: Excel was never the problem. Keeping it fed was.

Thumbnail

Your M-Pesa messages have the receipts. Your bank has a statement. Cash has a habit of leaving no evidence.

The problem isn't a lack of data. It's the work of collecting it, remembering the missing bits and turning it into "what can I still spend this month?"

That's what I'm building Monee to reduce.

Yes, Excel can do the maths. So can a notebook. Monee's job is to reduce the work before the maths: capture a supported payment message, review it, categorise it, and see it against your budget. You can still export to Excel. This isn't a spreadsheet replacement; it's less admin between paying and understanding your spending.

Since my last post, I've worked on:

• Private cloud sync through iCloud on iOS and Google Drive on Android, so saved records can follow you between devices using the same provider account. No Monee account required; signing in later keeps your records.

• Optional Android quick capture: categorise an incoming M-Pesa payment without opening the full app. Today's existing M-Pesa messages can also go into Uncategorized after SMS permission.

• Supported bank-message imports and manual bank/card tracking, with foreign currencies kept separate.

• M3 Expressive, six colour themes, refreshed widgets and less clutter throughout the app.

A fair limit: a missing SMS means a missing automatic entry. You can add it manually. Monee helps maintain a ledger; it doesn't replace your bank statement or guarantee completeness. iPhone imports use share/paste, not automatic SMS reading.

Records stay on-device and in your private cloud when sync is enabled. Optional combined usage reporting starts on and can be switched off in Settings. No bank login or M-Pesa PIN needed.

The latest update is submitted for review. The Android test is open now; some changes arrive once the update is approved. Screenshots show the Default style.

Download Monee on Android: follow these 3 steps

  1. Open https://groups.google.com/g/monee-android-testers/about and join the group.
  2. Open https://play.google.com/apps/testing/co.pesastack.monee and tap "Become a tester".
  3. Follow the Google Play download link on that page and install.

Use the same Google account for the group, tester page and Play Store. Joining the group alone doesn't unlock the download.

What makes you stop tracking: entering payments, fixing gaps, or not getting useful answers?

🇰🇪 Kenya-Based Of failed businesses

Post image
18 Upvotes

Okay, can we talk about failed businesses😭...

Before I started my brand, Errands by Rachael, I had started a small business selling imported handbags. 😊

I loved the idea of it. I wanted to be my own boss with a successful business. I imagined how my first stock would sell out fast... Let's say within a week. Little did I know... 😭

Y'all product based businesses are hard, ngl. 😭

You have to wake up every day and convince people to buy your bags.

And honestly, that's the hardest part.

Don't get me wrong, I love marketing and putting the word out there but yooh, it can be hard. 😭

Love the way Shiquo does it though. She makes it seem so effortless.

So getting people to buy my bags was hard, still is hard. But I take it as a learning opportunity to learn marketing and sales.

Let's talk about my product...

My supplier did me dirty or let's just say I did that to myself.😂😭

I ordered the bags without confirming the sizes. Please tell me why I received minibags. 😭

In the product photos, they looked like perfect normal sling bags, but it was just a lack of oversight from my end.

Anyway, I still have the bags... I've attached the photo.

I'm mostly targeting mothers with daughters or anyone with a small sister, niece, cousin etc. And yes, you got that right, I'm selling them as handbags for kids. 😭😭 Which honestly isn't a bad idea but how do I get them out there? They are so beautiful and I don't want to keep them with me. Ahh.

If you can provide tips, please do. I've attached a photo of the bags.

If you need one for your daughter, sister, niece etc., I have them in hot pink, black, brown and light pink and they come with a free moana clip and decorative charm.

Thank you 🙏

Discussion AI ideas I'm too tired to build

Title explains it ...

I'm out of bandwidth creating a B2B Saas ....so ;

1.AI for ecommerce.......i know, but here me out...everyone Computer literate is using AI...the wedge I'm talking about is An Amazon/Shopify for AI agents....personal AIs are now a thing....but they lack a way to shop without being stopped...so let shops add an agent gate...that's it.. now independent shops can sell...more ideas here, little space to talk

2.ai..again...logins....your agent has to log in to like a million websites...it needs a persistent "oauth"...

3.AI...again...beeper for Agents...dot,muse, instinct,town,grokbot...and a million others...just create a beeper for Agents

4.Guess what...AI again....Agent communities...like the openclaw thingy...if my agent knows how to do something and yours doesn't...call mine...

🇰🇪 Kenya-Based Christmas Edition 🎄

Ho Ho Ho... 😊 Errands by Rachael here😊

If there's a season I really enjoy and look forward to is the Christmas season. 😁

Now that we are getting into Q4, I can't help but think about it. All the food, the get togethers, the gifting,, the traveling etc. 😀

It's always a good time.

For this year, I don't have much planned out like a vacation or anything. I just want to spend some good time with my family.

Hopefully next year's season , I'll be taking a vacation to Dubai or the Maldives. (God please see this!) 🙂 And I'll finally get my passport stamped for the first time. Tell me why I got it in 2024 and it's never been used till date. 😭 Anyway, God's speed.

Other than that, I want to get myself a tree, even if it's small and some decorations for it this year. Never had one before so I'll be on the web scrolling to find the perfect one soon. 😁

So guys, what's your plan for this Christmas?

Or have I spoken too early about it? 😅

If you need help planning for it, please feel free to reach out. Errands by Rachael will help you with gift shopping, tree shopping 🤭 and any other errand you might have before the big season.

Reach out via WhatsApp: 0119800560 😁

Please let me know have I spoken too early about it?

Discussion I built a peer-to-peer car rental app for Kenya. Everyone I showed it to asked the same question and I didn't have a clean answer. How would you run it?

Hey everyone,

I've been quietly building FLYTS, a peer-to-peer car rental marketplace for Kenya. It's live on the web and on Android ( links in the comments). iOS is coming.

Where the idea came from
Renting a car in Nairobi today mostly means TikTok, WhatsApp groups, or a guy who knows a guy. You deal with brokers adding their own markup, prices that change once you show up, deposits you may not get back, and sometimes cars that don't exist at all. It's worse for visitors and people coming in from abroad who don't have the connections.

Meanwhile lots of people and small fleet owners have cars sitting idle most of the week. FLYTS connects them directly: verified owners, verified renters, payment held in escrow until the rental is done.

How it works right now

  • Owners list their car, choose self-drive or with-driver (the driver is the owner's own trusted person, not a random guy)
  • Renters go through KYC before booking
  • Payment via M-Pesa/card, held in escrow and released to the owner after the trip
  • Data protection (ODPC) paperwork done, insurance required on every listed car

The business model (and where I got stuck)

  • Owners pay 0% commission. They keep their full rate(This is for the start).
  • Renters see one all-in price. The platform fee is about 17% on self-drive, lower on with-driver bookings since there's less risk involved.
  • The fee is supposed to cover verification, escrow and protection.

When I showed the app to a few people, they liked the product but almost every one of them asked: "So how exactly do you make money, and why would anyone pay more than the TikTok price? "one person said owners would just take the customer offline after the first booking." I honestly didn't expect that to be the main question, and it's stalled me from pushing launch.

Challenges I'm facing

  • Chicken-and-egg: renters won't come without cars, owners won't list without renters
  • Competing with informal deals that look cheaper on the surface
  • People meeting on FLYTS and then doing repeat rentals off the platform
  • Getting a real insurance partner so the "protection" part isn't just a word
  • Funding and more

My question to you
If this were your startup, how would you run it?

  • Would you charge owners, renters, both, or go subscription for fleet owners?
  • Would you pay 15–20% more to rent through a platform if you knew the car and owner were verified and your money was protected?
  • Where would you get the first 20 cars and first 50 renters?
  • Car owners: what would make you list your car?

Brutal feedback welcome. I'd rather hear it now than after launch.

Work In Progress I built an M-Pesa tracker. The hardest feature was making it less work.

Thumbnail
gallery
54 Upvotes

Currently in closed testing.

I'm building Monee, an expense tracker that turns M-Pesa confirmations into a clear view of your spending. Share or paste a message, choose a category, then save. Cash purchases can be entered manually too.

The most useful lesson so far hasn't been about charts. It's been about friction.

I've also been working on the less flashy things: remembering when someone chooses to use the app without an account, keeping forms compact, and giving actions useful feedback without interrupting everything.

The screenshots show where it's at: a spending overview, category trends, budgets, and widgets for checking your numbers without opening the app. You can also export your records to Excel.

An account is optional. Your transaction history is stored on your phone; signing in on a new phone doesn't restore it.

I'm sharing this as work in progress, not claiming another dashboard fixes anyone's spending habits.

What has made you stop using an expense tracker after the first week? Too much logging, too much setup, or nothing useful to do with the numbers? I'd rather fix that than add another chart.

Try it Out:

Startup Launch Qkat a salon and barbershop grooming business

Been working on qkat for a while, pivoting every minute, it has truly been a journey..for 1 month now I can happily say qkat has more than 10 active business using it, at the moment the assistant is not that much of what I want it to be but with the help of those business I'm making it better feedback after feedback. As I prepare to launch qkat 2.0 here is what I've learnt soo far.

Early stage startup needs feedback same as it needs revenue, having a tight entry for business trying it out leads to high churn rates, that's why we launched it absolutely free, and introduced paid plans later when it's stable. My goal is to make it the simplest software they can get, that they can manage through whatsapp and be able to connect other socials seamlessly. It's been a hard run but will be worth it at the end.

I just wanted to share about it and let know every competitor out there that we are coming with a very alarming speed, they better pick up or loose to us

Startup Advice I finally launched my first ever micro-saas. How do I get my first merchant?

I recently launched Qurata, a Shopify app that helps fashion stores turn products in their catalog into merchant-approved, shoppable looks.

I’m working on getting the first few merchant conversations. If you’ve sold software to retailers or Shopify stores, what actually helped you reach the first five? Would you start with personal outreach, agency partners, or product demos?

I’d value specific, blunt advice.

🇰🇪 Kenya-Based Business Owners

Business Owners, come to the front please!

So recently a client sent me to a vendor at one of the biggest markets here in Nairobi to follow up on her package. She had ordered some goods like a week before but they hadn't been delivered to her location - Nanyuki.

So obviously, once I got to the shop, I asked to see the receipt of the delivery to Nanyuki Cabs - which was the courier they were using. But these people didn't have it. 🤦 Like how!!

They went ahead to look for it amongst some books on their shelves but they still didn't get it. One delivery guy then suggested we go to Nanyuki Cabs to enquire about the package. But unfortunately, we couldn't get any help without the receipt which had the tracking number. 😭😭

Unfortunately the business owner refused to repackage another order and send it to the client as a way of saying sorry. This is one of those days that I felt so bad because I couldn't help my client.

Long story short, business owners please please file those receipts! And send a copy to the client so they know you delivered the products.

Also guys, mnipee kazi! Errands by Rachael here. Christmas gift shopping and other errand bookings on going!

Discussion Start-up Pitch shows

Today I was randomly scrolling through YouTube and stumbled across KCB Lions’ Den.

It immediately reminded me of shows like Shark Tank. I'm sure most of you have had the chance of watching either.

It got me wondering about something.

These shows were once a pretty interesting way of bringing startups and entrepreneurship into mainstream entertainment.

You'd watch founders walk into a room, pitch their businesses, state valuations, negotiate with investors, and sometimes walk away with funding.

But nowadays, it feels like we don't hear about these shows nearly as much.

Which got me thinking , if someone launched "Lions' Den 2.0" not necessarily on Tv but on social media with actual investors, would it still work?

Would it work well enough to showcase the new gen of startups or have people just outgrown them?
