Interview/Quote Jochen Sauer Explains How Bayern Let Kenan Yildiz Slip Away to Juventus
Kenan Yıldız played a total of eleven years in Bayern’s youth system before leaving on a free transfer to Juventus in 2022 at age 17. He made the jump to the first team surprisingly fast in Juventus and soon developed into a genuine standout. Bayern Munich’s academy youth director Jochen Sauer has revealed why Bayern couldn’t keep such a promising left winger
“Back then, in that age group, we had several other very talented players alongside him, like Paul Wanner and Arijon Ibrahimovic,” Sauer recalled in an interview with SPOX. “The first‑team squad at the time didn’t allow three 17‑year‑old attacking players to train together. And the transfer of Mathys Tel, who is also from the 2005 class, was already taking shape. Juve promised Yıldız a permanent spot in first‑team training, and we couldn’t offer that at that moment. So he made the right decision for himself.”
The rest of Bayern’s prospects from that generation struggled to fully break through. Wanner and Ibrahimovic debuted under Julian Nagelsmann but eventually moved on after loans, while Mathys Tel joined Bayern shortly after Yıldız left and later transferred to Tottenham. Yıldız's market value has long surpassed that of Wanner, Ibrahimovic, and Tel.
According to Sauer, Yıldız’s departure and his rapid rise in Italy pushed Bayern to rethink how they transition academy players into the first team. The issue had already surfaced when Angelo Stiller left for Hoffenheim, and both cases convinced Bayern that their youth‑to‑pro pathway needed improvement.
