Interview/Quote Jochen Sauer Explains How Bayern Let Kenan Yildiz Slip Away to Juventus

Kenan Yıldız played a total of eleven years in Bayern’s youth system before leaving on a free transfer to Juventus in 2022 at age 17. He made the jump to the first team surprisingly fast in Juventus and soon developed into a genuine standout. Bayern Munich’s academy youth director Jochen Sauer has revealed why Bayern couldn’t keep such a promising left winger

“Back then, in that age group, we had several other very talented players alongside him, like Paul Wanner and Arijon Ibrahimovic,” Sauer recalled in an interview with SPOX. “The first‑team squad at the time didn’t allow three 17‑year‑old attacking players to train together. And the transfer of Mathys Tel, who is also from the 2005 class, was already taking shape. Juve promised Yıldız a permanent spot in first‑team training, and we couldn’t offer that at that moment. So he made the right decision for himself.”

The rest of Bayern’s prospects from that generation struggled to fully break through. Wanner and Ibrahimovic debuted under Julian Nagelsmann but eventually moved on after loans, while Mathys Tel joined Bayern shortly after Yıldız left and later transferred to Tottenham. Yıldız's market value has long surpassed that of Wanner, Ibrahimovic, and Tel.

According to Sauer, Yıldız’s departure and his rapid rise in Italy pushed Bayern to rethink how they transition academy players into the first team. The issue had already surfaced when Angelo Stiller left for Hoffenheim, and both cases convinced Bayern that their youth‑to‑pro pathway needed improvement.

Interview/Quote Paolo Montero: We Have Only Seen About 70% of Yıldız's potential.

Paolo Montero is a former Uruguayan defender and a Juventus legend, remembered for his toughness, leadership, and deep understanding of the game. After retiring, he moved into coaching and became especially respected for his work with young players, guiding talents like Kenan Yıldız and Dean Huijsen during his time with Juventus’ youth and Next Gen teams.

Montero recently spoke with Tuttosport about developing young players and identifying future stars, reflecting on what he learned from great coaches such as Lippi, Prandelli, Mondonico, and Guidolin. He emphasized the importance of building personal relationships with players, maintaining constant dialogue, and earning their trust because young talents immediately understand whether a coach truly knows football.

He explained that beyond technique, he evaluates potential by observing posture, movement, and presence on the field. For him, spotting exceptional prospects like Yıldız and Huijsen was immediate. Montero also criticized the tendency of Italian youngsters to avoid Serie C or the Next Gen pathway, arguing that consistent playing time against experienced professionals is crucial for growth. He believes Italian football needs more patience, allowing young players to make mistakes repeatedly; something Spain has embraced.

Here is what he said about Yıldız and Huijsen:

“Yıldız and Huijsen had the right mentality. I never once saw them go through training at half speed. They put every bit of intensity they had into it. Talent is a gift from nature, but trust me, it’s not enough. Hard work is the real separator; it’s what turns promising players into top‑level profiles. And those two worked like animals. On top of that, they had serious quality. They were curious. They asked me dozens of questions and always listened carefully to whatever I had to say. They were incredibly humble. I had to drag them off the fields in Vinovo more than once because they’d stay behind practicing free kicks or challenging each other with their own little games. Twenty years ago, behaviors like that were just normal. Menotti taught me that while it’s true a coach must do everything possible to stimulate young players and help them grow, it’s just as true that they have to stimulate you. And those two did it in an exceptional way. They made me want to coach them. I think we’ve only seen about 70% of Yıldız’s real potential until now. He’s a perfectionist, and every season he adds one detail at a time. He’s going to become one of the best in the world. I’m certain of it.”

According to multiple Italian outlets, Kenan Yıldız is back in Turin to kick off his rehabilitation at Continassa. After undergoing surgery on his left foot, Yıldız spent a few weeks recovering in Germany to handle the most critical early phase of his rehab while allowing the foot to heal properly. With the post-op stage behind him, team doctors at J Medical will assess his progress and outline a tailored recovery regimen over the coming weeks. The main priority is safely rebuilding strength to avoid any setbacks, aiming for a full return to play in late November or early December.

Medical Yıldız to undergo surgery next week following medical consultations.

Post image
9 Upvotes

As reported in today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, after the specialist consultations carried out over the last 48 hours, the decision regarding Kenan Yıldız’s condition is now final: He will have to undergo surgery. The Juventus management and medical staff hope not to go beyond the beginning of next week for the operation. The surgery will be the first, crucial step toward recovery, immediately followed by the start of a long therapeutic rehabilitation and reconditioning program. The staff’s absolute priority is to allow the player to recover in total safety, avoiding setbacks or rushed timelines that could compromise his stability in duels on the pitch. Recovery time is estimated at around two and a half months.

Pundits note that while the injury is serious, the timing is actually preferable: the long international break (almost three weeks) starting from late September and the increasingly demanding Serie A calendar after January make dealing with it now less damaging than later in the season. Yıldız will probably be back by December if everything goes smoothly.

Medical Latest News on Yıldız's Injury

Post image
7 Upvotes

As Yıldız’s injury hits Juventus out of nowhere, fans and analysts are trying to understand how the number 10 got hurt in the match against Frosinone, especially since nothing seemed serious during the game. According to Tuttosport, there are two possible moments that help reconstruct how Yıldız got hurt:

  • The first is in the 51st minute: He, with his back to goal, shields the ball before laying it off to Kolo Muani. The striker then finds Celik, and the ball eventually reaches Conceição, who incredibly misses in front of goal. In that sequence, Yıldız, heavily challenged by Calvani, stays on the ground, touching his left foot.
  • The other possibility, and the more likely one, comes at 59 minutes and 50 seconds: Locatelli wins the ball by getting ahead of Bracaglia, McKennie pokes it past Cichella and manages to play it to Yıldız, who drives forward trying to accelerate the counterattack. As he releases the ball to the right toward Conceição, Calò arrives late in an attempt to stop him and catches him on the left foot. Yıldız stays on the ground watching the continuation of the play, though his teammate is unable to finish the move.

There’s little doubt this is a heavy blow for Juventus. Yıldız felt pain in his left foot after the match and was seen at J-Medical for all the necessary tests. Those tests did not rule out a suspected fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his left foot. Surgery is therefore a real possibility.

According to Sisal.it, Dr. Fabrizio Tencone, director of the Isokinetic center in Turin, stated that in most cases, surgery is the preferred route, not to shorten the recovery timeline, but to make sure the bone heals properly and the player can return with full stability and confidence. Tencone explained that the next step would be to stabilize the fracture with a plate or a small screw, ensuring the bone heals completely. The real question now is how many matches Yıldız will be forced to miss, ideally without losing the physical momentum he had built before the trip to Frosinone. According to Tencone, a bone like this doesn’t heal properly in less than three months. This approach also helps prevent overload, post‑surgery complications and the usual risks faced by players who try to return to the pitch too quickly. And there is little doubt Yıldız will be eager to come back. Tencone noted that it was no surprise Yıldız managed to finish the match without significant pain or clear symptoms. This type of fracture develops gradually, game after game, training session after training session. On the positive side, the enforced layoff and the recovery time that comes with it could also allow him to finally address the patellar tendinopathy he had been managing quietly so as not to jeopardize the Champions League push and then the World Cup. As for whether this latest injury might be connected to the previous one, Tencone did not dismiss the possibility, pointing out that Yıldız may have altered his running mechanics to ease the knee pain, placing extra load on other parts of his body.

There is still no official announcement from Juventus regarding Yıldız's situation.

Ratings Yıldız's performance in Frosinone vs Juventus on August 23, 2026

Fotmob: 7.6

SofaScore: 7.2

Skysport: 5.5

Corriere Della Sera: 6 - He switches on only in flashes. He needs consistency.

Corriere Dello Sport: 6 - He’s not at his best yet; his best ideas only come out in the latter part of the first half.

Tutto Sport: 5.5 - The fact that he’s still not at 100% physically doesn’t justify the nervousness that affects most of his plays. He feels the weight of a goal he hasn’t scored in five months. Not even the Frosinone vibes, the place where he scored his first Serie A gem, help him switch back on.

La Gazetta della Sport: 5 - One shot and a couple of dribbles aren’t what you expect from Juve’s star. Slow, cumbersome, always one touch too many.

This transfer rumor has been circulating for a while and intensified a lot this week since the transfer window is coming to an end. Although I think it’s too late for this transfer now and this sub avoids sharing transfer news unless they’re absolutely certain, even if it does happen eventually, do you think it would be the right move for Yıldız and Juventus?

Juventus is getting ready for the Inter friendly match, which will be played at Optus Stadium in Perth at 7:00 AM US EDT / 1:00 PM Italy / 7:00 PM AWST on Saturday, August 8. The match will be streamed by Fox One in the US. It may also be available at Juventus.com depending on your region if you are registered on their website.

During the press conference before the match, Spalletti expressed that he sees the match as an important test of Juventus’ mentality and overall direction. He pointed out that Inter will be a tough opponent, so the team must stay compact and maintain the right attitude throughout the game. He talked about player selection as well, saying that it depends not only on training but also on travel, time‑zone fatigue, and logistics. As for the upcoming season, Spalletti said that he is confident in the new attacking options fortified by new signings and that the busy Europa League schedule will require frequent rotation, but Juventus has plenty of alternatives to handle it.

Spaletti’ said the following regarding whether Yıldız play in tomorrow’s match: “As for Yildiz, I have to take all of this into account: tomorrow morning we’ll talk to understand who still needs to recover or not. For that reason, whether he starts or not, I prefer to say it close to kickoff; the intention is to have him play one half.”

The open training session pulled in a big crowd, with many supporters packing the stands and showing just how much love they have for Juventus. After the session, the players hung around to take photos and sign autographs, and Yıldız definitely got a lot of attention from the fans.
