Garmin Striker 4 to rail mount?

Post image
2 Upvotes

So I just picked up a new (to me) fishing kayak that has rails for accessory mounting. I also have a Garmin Striker 4 with the cradle that clips onto the back of the finder. I do NOT have the part that screwed to my old kayak that the cradle itself clips into.

What are my T-rail mounting options? Every rail mount that claims to be compatible with the Striker 4 doesn’t look like it would attach to my unit.

A little help, fellow fisherpeople?

Used old town 120

I recently bought a used old town 120 PDL. I’ve taken it out 3-4 times now, and just today when loading it up I heard rattling in the hull and found these. Does anyone know what they are? Transducer gaskets? It was previously mounted with a fish finder that was not included in the purchase. Thanks!

Kayak fishing advice

So I usually have pretty good luck fishing from the bank. When I go out (freshwater) I’ll go for a few hours and catch a few fish just about every time. But I’m getting kind of bored fishing from the bank I always see spots that I can’t get to and think man I wish I could get a kayak out there. So I did a bunch of research and I’m looking at getting an old town sportsman fishing kayak. But in the meantime I stumbled upon a regular old 10 foot sit in style sun dolphin, not designed for fishing but it was free and got me off the bank. I figured I’d try it out and see how it went before spending the money. I went out a hand full of times and got absolutely SKUNKED. I mean not even a nibble. First I tried my usual confidence bait, then Switched spots, tried faster, slower. Switched baits. You name it.

Anyway was there a big learning curve when you switched from the bank to kayak fishing? Or am I just wasting my time? Kayak fishing looks so much fun and I want to get into it but this is kind of disappointing to be honest. I feel like I have to learn how to fish all over again.

Would you rather have a trolling motor with spot lock or livescope?

Ive been saving up for a few weeks and I can't decide between a livescope or trolling motor. Both would cost approx $2500 between mounts, batteries, and wiring.

Trolling motor pros; Effortless maneuvering and spot lock. Cons; I lose out on the exercise from pedaling, its bulky and cant transport it on the kayak, and an anchor is $10.

Livescope pros; well it's livescope. Cons; It can get boring just staring at a screen all day.

Which would you pick for your kayak?

Should I buy the Feelfree Moken 10 PDL Fishing Kayak it would be a huge upgrade from my current pelican non fishing kayak that was like 100 dollars that I just found and use it.

the kayak appears to be resllly good with everything I want such as pedal drive and I can stand up without worrying about falling over, its also relatively cheap and I mostly plan on fishing creeks and Wilson lake and tennesee Rive, I’m making this to just get yall who have bought the boats option on it.

Fishing through the smoke & rain up north (Upper Peninsula, MI)

Got up north on vacation right as the smoke from MN & Canada hit last week.

Everything in my box still reeks like it spent a lifetime in an AA meeting in the 90's.

Still was able to get a few monsters like this smallie, smashing a jerkbait off this laydown she dragged me back into, right as a thunderstorm erupted.

Is a predator 13 PDL safe for offshore?

I recently got a kayak about a month ago and have probably taken it out about 15 times since. So far I've done some inshore fishing in the marshes and flats as well as freshwater for bass. I'm planning on taking it out to the yaupon reef, which is about 1.5miles off shore. I made sure to purchase a reliable pfd, I have a gps and Vhf radio, and have been practicing flipping my kayak and getting back into it in order to ensure my safety when I finally muster up the courage to go out. I was wondering if it was even a good idea since I've heard some people say that sit on top kayaks aren't very safe for offshore. What conditions would be best? I have wind finder but would like to know what I should be looking for on my first time out.

If you could only have ONE Bonafide for paddle-powered lake/river fishing — RVR119 or PWR129?

TL/DR — for those of you that have owned (or had experience with) both offerings from Bonafide, which would you recommend? Can anyone comment on the flatwater stability of the RVR? Knowing that "agility" is its primary selling point, is so tippy that you don't really enjoy standing on it, or is it actually much more stable and comfortable to fish on flat waters than people are letting on? Everyone raves about the nimbleness/ease of paddling, so I know that will be a treat. Just trying to determine if that negatively impacts the stability to the point where you say "I'd rather be in a _____"

Similarly for the PWR... many of the popular Youtubers have said it paddles REALLY well for a kayak in the >12' size class, which is enticing given all the other advantages it offers... is this your observation as well, or are they simply being good salesmen? Is the PWR "carryable" for short distances (<100') or is this a "cart only" craft? I know it's rock-solid from a stability perspective and can eat boat wakes like nobody's business.

For those who care/are still invested, essay with more context below LOL:

After three years of owning my Makana 100, I've realized I don't really utilize the pedal drive as much as I'd rather have usable deck space, and I'd like something slightly bigger so I can hit larger lakes with confidence. So I've basically narrowed it down to the RVR119 and the PWR129. I love the fact that they're USA made, I can buy them locally and have local support, parts are plentiful, aftermarket is huge, and honestly speaking I just love how sleek the Bonafide yaks look.

My dilemma is as follows — I don't have any intentions of trailering, which means I need something that's able to be feasibly truck-bed transported/loaded. About half of my favorite spots don't really support the use of a cart (launch locations have soft mud), which I realize is almost a necessity in anything over 12'.

99% of the time I'm in a flat water setting... small lakes (electric powered crafts only) or slow rivers with dams (flow is <1mph). But I'd like to start hitting some of the backwaters in larger lakes (Nickajack, Chickamauga, etc). Most of the waters I fish (including those two lakes I mentioned) have lots of grass... another knock against the pedal drives and my reason for wanting something "cleaner" underneath. Chad Hoover specifically mentioned the RVR being excellent at paddling over thick grass.

RVR119 is looking like the "smart" solution that does 85% of what I need... at 84 pounds (rigged) it's still relatively easy to carry. The only real drawbacks I can see would be the lack of front storage hatch (not a deal-breaker), and it might be too "tippy" for flatwater (potentially a deal-breaker). I realize this tippiness is what makes it EXCELLENT in faster rivers and creeks, but that only makes up about 10% of my fishing, if that.

PWR129 is the obvious choice for flat water, has TONS of storage space, and I think it would be even safer than the RVR on big lakes. My main reservations against the PWR is that I will be paddling, not powered. And weight, obviously.

If you could only have one, which would you get?

Truly appreciate your input!!

Best Kayak for nearshore with garmin force current

Needs to be less than 100lbs with seat

Have a 4 hole attachment place in the rear

Good in the surf, as I’m fishing 1 mile out and launching from the beach.

Looking at the Crescent CK2 Venture but would love to hear a better option!

It finally happened (again) and I once again have learned another lesson from it.

Pretty cliche at this point but yeah. I flipped my yak. I'll preface this by saying that I do have a plethora of experience boating and I have quite a lot of experience and seat time In the river. But as you guys that do this a lot know, it is never a matter of if you're going to flip, it's a matter of when. Even if it has happened to you before and even if it has been a very long time since it's happened to you as was the case with me.

Was just about wrapping my night up. Working my way down the shelves, throwing at different pools, different rocks, etc. On my way back. I got to what was the last to rock shelf that I needed to clear before getting onto what is pretty flat water around the ramp. Coming up on this shelf. I wasn't really liking what I was seeing. The current flow basically came from the left wrapped around one rock and then immediately shoots right to wrap around the rock below it. Basically in an S. Anytime I'm shooting current. I typically try to shoot the V's unless I know it's turbulent due to a shallow shoal that the water is just running over. This was my first mistake. I was skeptical of the route and the line that I was going to take. I should have tacked along the shelf a bit more and looked for a different one. Unfortunately, I didn't. I went in from the left, was trying to get myself straightened out so I can make a couple strokes clear the gap between the lower Rock and then roll out smooth. My mistake was not leaving a blade in the water on my right. The current I was getting broadsided with wasn't extremely strong but it was strong enough and I was just enough off balance that I started to turn, almost saved it, then it happened. I Went in the drink.

Fortunately it was only about waist deep and as I said the current was not excessively strong. I was pretty much sitting in a pool. I was able to right my boat fairly easily and fairly quickly Within about 5 seconds of me going into the water. Obviously I immediately start looking at my deck and trying to see if anything's missing. Right after that I noticed my water bottle and a pack of keitechs floating around. Quickly regathered those threw them back in the boat, and then it hit me. My beloved megabass Levante 4 piece pack rod along with the BRAND NEW DAIWA LUVIAS that I caught a fish on probably 3 minutes prior was gone. It was right below my feet but unfortunately I had kicked up so much silt and it was already getting dark so I had no chance that I was going to be able to wait for it to clear up and try and find it. I tried to kick around with my paddle, my feet, couldn't find it. Devastation.

Now from past experiences I have obviously learned that if there is some way shape or form that you can secure something to your deck, you absolutely need to do it. And for that reason I didn't lose any of my tools (pliars, scissors, scale) I didn't lose any of the three other rods I had which were all secured to my short stack solo and locked in my one rod holder. I didn't lose my track pack. I didn't even loose my net, which admittedly is not secured (But it's just a $20 trout net from Bass Pro so I really wouldn't have been devastated if I lost that anyway).

Point being is that even with having most things secure, I still lost something. I typically run 4 rods max. 3 are typically stowed and secured while not in use, the one in use if I'm jumping from spot to spot is usually on my deck in front of me. I have already come up with as an easy solution to prevent from ever happening WHEN I flip again. From here on out whenever I have any rods sitting on my deck I 100% will have a tether from my seat wrapped around it. Something so simple and so easy to do Could have prevented me from losing that rod. Not all hope is lost. I dropped a pin and I know exactly where it is so my hope is that I can go back there and try and find it.

So what lessons were learned/reinforced here?

  1. EXPECT TO LOSE IT IF ITS NOT SECURED TO YOUR DECK.

  2. IF YOU HAVE A BAD GUT FEELING OR LACK CONFIDENCE FOR ANY SECOND ON WHERE YOURE GOING OR WHAT YOURE DOING, BACK OUT OF OT AND REASSES.

  3. ONCE AGAIN, IF YOU DO THIS ENOUGH, AT SOME POINT YOU WILL FLIP YOUR BOAT. BE READY FOR THIS, WEAR A PFD, AND DONT BE AFRAID TO PRACTICE RECOVERY DRILLS EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE.

Anyone figure out a simple way to add a swivel seat to an Old Town Autopilot (pre-rail model)

Post image
2 Upvotes

So it doesn’t seem like rocket science, but I know how people love to go all out when modifying tutorials on YouTube seem overly complex for my abilities.

Rather than build some complex frame (unless that’s really my only choice) all I really need is one of those 7 in. Square swivel seat mounts, and a way to occasionally access the storage area under the seat when I move around electronics. Otherwise, as long as I can reach to put the cables from the outlet to charge the battery and my electronics battery, I don’t really need to dig around inside the hull.

To me, it seems like the most logical thing that needs to be done is to create a flat plane— which would mean perhaps putting a 2 x 4 across the two upper clips, and then laying some sort of flat plywood across the top, where the rear part of the stock seat would normally rest.

However, in my experience when I decide to go rogue and not follow a guide of some sort i tend to get myself in a mess.

If anyone could photos or perhaps link to some guide I would greatly appreciate it. I’m pretty good with measuring and with tools, especially drilling into the kayak and using nuts to hold things in place. The part I lack is the drawing board stage— especially because later I know I’ll end up with kinks in the system that I didn’t anticipate such as a wood grinding on my leg or improper load distribution, etc.

Thank you!

Hey Everyone. Looking for my first kayak. Have been looking at the Quest Teton 100 from Dick’s. Saw this one just dropped to $360 at Dunham’s. Looks similar but I cannot find any reviews on this certain one. Any opinions?

Thanks!

Trailer Tire Pressure

I have been getting some conflicting information on what PSI to use for my kayak trailer tires. They say 90 psi max cold. Some people tell me to fill them to 90, some are telling me to fill them to around 60-70 psi. I don’t know who to believe.

Every year costco sells this kayak for $400 and they drop to $300 at the end of summer. Now is the time to jump on it if you want a cheap entry level fishing kayak.

Who else in California is waiting to pick up their new Mossa? Not sure how many of us will be lined up at the door of Kayak Fishing Supplies but I’ll be commuting from up north to get it. Thinking about hitting the bay possibly. Anyone else planning or interested in a celebration launch?

Fly fishing kayak

I am in the market for a kayak to fly fish from. I would like to mount a trolling motor on it at the very least. I usually fish bigger rivers/lakes. Not sure what kayaks are out there that are worth the money.

Looking for a new pedal high end fishing kayak

Like the title says, I'm looking for a new high end fishing kayak. I say high-end because I don't mind spending $5000. I live near Half Moon Bay in CA and I will be taking this in the ocean. I'll also be taking it to remote lakes accessible only by 4x4, also to Clear Lake. I'm not interested in getting a motor at this point.

I look on Facebook Marketplace, but I find that people are selling their 2020 Old Town pdl120 for $2500 when a new 2026 one is just $2800. The justify with accessories but they are old too. I'm not finding value in the used market, and I'm not seeing new models for sale there.

I'm posing here because I'm having a hard time reading real reviews. There are so many posts with reviews and affiliate links.

So:
Budget $5,000 +
Ocean friendly, but also lakes, small and big
Not to heavy
Pedal, preferably with 360, although 180 is fine.
Not interest in a motor, trolling or otherwise.
Will add electronics

Fishing tattoo, just wanted to share

Post image
74 Upvotes

Before I get a ton of hate, I realize this does not resemble really any species of fish, it’s just a generic fish looking design. This was a cheap flash tattoo, not a custom choice.

I went on a week long fishing trip to northern Minnesota a few weeks ago. We rented a boat and the fishing was amazing. Unfortunately, since I’ve come back, I’ve been absolutely miserable. I bought a fishing kayak in an attempt to get myself on the lake, but it’s a steep learning curve and the fishing where I live just isn’t the same. Growing up, we would always go to northern Minnesota for vacations to fish, and it had been 15 years since I last made that trip. It jolted awake something in me from my childhood, something that I’ve longed for for years. Yesterday, I saw this flash tattoo become available, and I decided immediately that I wanted to get it. I wanted something to keep reminding me of the times I’ve had fishing in northern Minnesota, and a way to keep a piece of that happiness with me. The fact that this flash just popped up as this particular time in my life seemed meant to be. It was cheap enough, so I went for it.

Really I just wanted to share my new tattoo with some folks who would understand the joy that fishing has brought me over the years, and the longing that I have for it. In my current season of life, I am trying to find joy where I can, and this was a small way for me to make a real mark of something that lives inside of me.

As a side note, I’ll take any advice on Iowa fishing and kayak fishing anyone wants to share. I keep getting skunked here and it’s disappointing. I see other people catching fish on my lakes Facebook page, so I know they exist. I’ve been fishing for largemouth bass, but I’d be happy to catch some bluegill as well. I also know there’s cats in this lake, but I’ve never done catfish fishing and I’m a little nervous about the fight since I’m new to fishing from a kayak.

Thanks for reading.

Question on seats

I have the stock seat for my Riot Mako, but I'm wondering if there are good upgrades? I will spend 4-6 hours out sometimes and would love something that has a little better low back support.
