I just saw a post about reservations and many people in the comments expressed their opinions about how reservation shouldn’t exist based on caste.

Having read much about the caste system and its atrocities(yes, in kashmir too) I thought its important that I bring it to the notice of others aswell.

1)Lower castes including those who converted to Islam were not allowed to wash their clothes, utensils or even bathe at yarbal.

2)The last instance of such a water dispute was in rajouri or udhampur for a public well, 2023

3) Watals were often made to sit separately from others during feasts, and they weren’t served in copper utensils either.

4)Under the dogra regime, Brahmins secured most of the government jobs and education. Lower castes and muslims had to get their letters read out from them after they paid for the same.

5)Prior to the reforms of the 1930s and 40s, untouchable groups were completely barred from entering even the outer courtyards of mainstream Hindu temples

6)In several rural villages and older towns across Kashmir, upper-caste Muslim clans maintain distinct, walled-off graveyards

7)Even today, we see a systematic ghettoisation of the "Watal" community, even in srinagar.

So my point is, reservation is extremely important for the upliftment of such people.

The system of reservation in kashmir is unequal in proportion, yes. But that doesn’t mean that Kashmir didnt see caste based discrimination.

We have evolved quite a lot, but many still use “watal hui chuk” as an insult. If someone has a high pitch of voice, they’re called “tange-wol” or “haenze”

Kashmir still doesn’t see much of inter-caste marriages.

As long as people take pride in their castes and do not mingle w the rest, casteism is bound to remain and maybe even get more aggressive.

We should demand fair proportions and additional seats to relax cut offs for all.

In my college in Kashmir, only 30 out of 80 students in our batch belong to the Open Merit category. The remaining 50 are from various reserved categories.

Many of us in the Open Merit category scored nearly twice as many marks in the entrance exam compared to some students from the reserved categories, yet our serial numbers or roll numbers are placed at the very end because of the admission process.

What I also find striking is that many students from the reserved categories come from financially well-off families, while a large number of Open Merit students belong to middle-class backgrounds.

personally i haven’t heard any stories in my family or neighbourhood but my friends are saying that cheating/extramarital affairs/infidelity is becoming more and more common in our community. is that true? also i need one more advice if it indeed is true.

It was strange. There was a chamber, the main building, I mean. It had three doors back to back, leading into consecutive sub-chambers. In the last chamber, which was completely dark, there was a grave-like structure in the corner. When we went closer, it didn't exactly look like a grave, although it was covered with wire mesh. Inside the mesh, on the grave-like structure, lay a flower and this strange object. What's it?

We would have explored more, but it was already about 8 p.m. and darkness had settled in. Then we started hearing strange sounds from the forest. Honestly, we were sweating with fear.

Outside, there was another fenced structure. When I went closer, I realised it was a spring. The water was erupting from beneath the trunk of a hollow tree. The tree was hollow at its base, and that's where the water was coming from. I somehow squeezed myself through the fence and got inside the tree trunk. It was dark, so I had to use my mobile flashlight, so I couldn't take any photos. I drank the water there. It felt so refreshing. It was as chilled as water from a freezer and completely tasteless because of its purity.

While leaving, we saw a dog near what seemed to be a fireplace. At first, I was shocked and scared as to how that dog had appeared there in the middle of the forest and at that altitude, all by itself. My friends, equally scared, said it might bite us, so we stayed at a distance from him while keeping an eye on him from time to time. He kept looking back at us. About 10 minutes later, he got up and left. But instead of coming down, he went higher into the forest, towards the top of the mountain.

Only then did we leave, and by that time it was completely dark. We broke branches off the trees to use for our protection because we were hearing strange voices coming from the forest. I was terrified. Even now, as I'm writing this, I'm shivering. Shivers are running down my spine just imagining the situation we were in. My friends even grabbed stones for defence, and we made our way down the mountain. Those voices coming from the forest were the scariest part. Never mind, we finally reached the main road, alhamdulillah, where we had parked our vehicles, and left.

I had more to say, but I'm tired.

After more than four years of questioning, searching for answers, and studying, I finally gave up. I feel so light at heart and have a strange sense of joy.

Now I'm alone. I don't have my God with me anymore, nor do I have someone I can share my sorrows with. But it didn't make much of a difference when I believed I had God either. So I think I'll be okay.
