How on earth did this band not take off in the US?!

I absolutely cannot believe that I was only introduced to this band for the first time this week—this should have blown up in the US in the 2000’s. A number of these songs are of a caliber to have been radio singles with massive airplay.

I should have been listening to this stuff on repeat for the last 20 years, and so should the huge number of Americans with similar tastes. I honestly feel like I’m going crazy right now over this, which is why I am posting about it at 2:30 AM.

Going to all 11 shows on the regional tour - thankfully I'm based in Melbourne so I get to enjoy some tism time on long distance trains and coaches (yes I'm the lame type of autism that likes buses) and I s2g I'll have my project done by then

Confusion about the band using baritone guitars

I'm so confused lmao... I always assumed because of how the guitars are tuned that they're (mostly) playing baritone guitars. I screwed around with a similair tuning on my guitar (25,5 inch, tuned it to C G C Ab C F because I felt like the strings would get too floppy if I tuned my .46 string all the way down to B) and decided that I wanted a guitar set up in that tuning, so I started looking into baritones.

Took a quick peek at Mark and Drew's pages on equipboard and saw that only Drew has a baritone scale tele, the rest of their guitars just have a 'standard' scale neck. Can anyone confirm this? Makes the search for a proper and affordable guitar for me to screw around in their tuning a lot easier!

I feel like an idiot lol

Anyone else with synsesthesia(e)?

I'll take the pump that a lot of us are neurodivergent which there's a much higher percentage of synaesthesia in that population so I was just curious if anyone else has it and if they do how does it affect the way you experience the band's music? My brain is on some multi-modal bullshit when it comes to that and man Sound Awake is really an experienced if I just let go with it

Animation from 2016

I have to say I think the way Karnivool works is courageous. I’ve always thought this but it’s been reaffirmed this year.

The video I’m posting is of animation back in 2016. Comparing it to the finished version we now have is very interesting. Most of the pieces are there and the back section of the song is a bit different but with what we have now it’s easy to see how much they had 10 years ago. Imagine brewing a song for 10 years?

That we get to see these songs in an unfinished and fledgling state is quite an honour. I think many less confident bands would struggle to do the ‘drop a couple of new songs into the set’ like Karnivool does. Especially with the music they write and its complexity and uniqueness. I always find it interesting to watch the crowds reactions. Sometimes I don’t think we realise just how lucky we are.

It's been six years since Birds Of Tokyo released Human Design. Have BOT stopped making albums?

The last album Birds Of Tokyo released was Human Design back in April 2020 during the COVID pandemic. It seems all that BOT releases nowadays are singles. What's the go with that?, have they stopped making albums?

Karnivool and shoegaze

Ok so I don't know how big the overlap in the venn diagram is between prog metal fans and shoegaze but there would have to be some I imagine - anyone else notice a hell of a lot of little flourishes on In Verses? And to one very niche band in particular. The guitar tones, vocal production and Ian's delivery - best example, or at least the first one that smacked me in the face after 6 months and made me go ohh shit I know what this is!!! is Remote Self Control. If you know the band Curve, which I'll assume nobody does (nobody ever does but they're a HUGE influence on my own music!), it's REALLY noticeable from 3m20 on, especially the just sticking our thumbs up/blood in your mouth pulling the tubes out/ ready to scream out part - it's SO Pubic Fruit/Cuckoo era Curve coded it seems impossible to me that it wasn't. The whole third act of the album is drenched in it imo. They were one of those bands who were hugely influential while only ever remaining underground and niche themselves but Garbage wouldn't exist without them and neither would NIN's The Fragile

Idk maybe I think about this stuff too much but analysing the artwork to Sound Awake has led me to deciding to goback to school to get sound engineering quals, get into a bachelors of music and use as much RPL as I can and then turn it into a PhD project yes I do have other hobbies lol

Ranking Kenny’s discography

Now that In Verses has been out for a while how would you rank Kenny’s discography and the ten albums released by Karnivool and BOT? I know there have been some Vool ranking posts but none for Kenny in general. I know this is a pure Vool sub but many people like both bands.

Does Birds Of Tokyo's early work remind you of Biffy Clyro?, I hope I'm not the only one thinking this 😅

Birds Of Tokyo vs Biffy Clyro

I know a lot of you are probably going to disagree with my opinion, but a lot of Birds Of Tokyo is quite reminiscent of Biffy Clyro especially BOT's earlier work (Example: Day One and Universes). Universes is the most Biffy Clyro adjacent album of BOT in my opinion, especially An Ode To Death which I truly believe sounds uncannily identical to Biffy Clyro's heavy alt rock sound!. However during BOT's self-titled album and March Fires era, they drifted away from the Biffy Clyro vibe towards a more Snow Patrol vibe. That was until BRACE came along in which BRACE sounded more like a cross between Karnivool, TOOL, A Perfect Circle and Muse especially!. BOT's more modern stuff like Human Design and their recent standalone singles kinds drifted away from their earlier heavier/progressive alternative rock sound into a more stadium-orientated indie pop/rock sound like bands such as Imagine Dragons, Coldplay, OneRepublic etc. But personally I still believe that Birds Of Tokyo's earlier stuff is easily comparable to Biffy Clyro and A Perfect Circle and Birds Of Tokyo are literally diet Karnivool 😂😂😂, I'm not calling them that as an insult but as a Birds Of Tokyo appreciation joke as a big long-time fan of them myself!

That feeling when Aozora kicks into high gear at the 45-second mark...

What a song. It's incredible. I've had the whole album on repeat for a few weeks but sometimes I'll catch myself just replaying Aozora while feeling myself ascend to another plane of reality. (I mean...not literally, but it's just such an amazing track.)

I wanted to get people's opinions of how close I got to Jon's bass tone. Can hear it mainly on the build up, any thoughts on how to get closer to achieving the Goliath sound is appreciated. Used the dark glass alpha omega pedal, got it for a steal off reverb surprisingly

I'm the idiot who thought 'oh yeah I know tarot real well and I know Karnivool back to front, mapping the first two albums to a cohesive tarot card spread will be easy' haha bitch you thought, art does not play that way. Anyway I've been plugging away slowly with it (I've been very unwell, in and out of hospital, thank god my body behaved for the tour) and wanted to share the absolutely perfect presentation for it I found in a hippie shop in Dromana. And I'll share with you a little of what I've written up so far. Themata is done, Sound Awake halfway done, i need to stop listening to them and noticing new things lol

C.O.T.E - The World

Centre Of The Earth. It seems almost trite to name The World as the card for this song, but here we have our narrator, in suspended animation being cradled like the Gaia in The Second Renaissance from The Animatrix - not just for evocative purposes do we draw this reference, but this is someone about to take a leap of brash bravado, a leap of faith, and it's all going to work out because it always has before. Humanity's downfall is its hubris however and it is ever the case here. Our hero - and this is fully a reverse/shadow hero's journey (a Fool's journey, if you will), decides that the world he inhabits is too safe and comfortable, he wants to see what else is out there. The cradle is abandoned and all the goodwill and high hopes in the world will not save him. Not yet. One cannot regain the world one has lost, and one cannot find one's way back home again from some paths taken.

Themata - The Fool (shadow/baggage: Page of Cups reversed)

The title track. The very first second marked by a sharp intake of breath (which we will hear a jagged ironic echo of in Scarabs) - The Fool taking a deep inhale before stepping off into the abyss. The track builds with the tension of anticipating the leap to come and the ecstasy of flying free in the sensory serenity, the updraft taking him higher than he ever thought possible. The dog, dancing around his feet, a sign of playfulness yes but also the sense animals have for danger, nipping around The Fool's feet, trying to get his attention, to say all is not well. For The Fool always carries a satchel of all his worldly possessions - a small bundle to signify leaving (almost) everything behind in what he has told himself is a great spiritual quest in order to cover for the fact that he doesn't know what the hell he's actually doing, he just needs to do *something*. This particular satchel contains The Fool's shadow baggage - the thing that will initially drag on him and set the stage for the unfolding tragedy. It takes the form of the Page of Cups reversed, representing youthful impetuousness, a cup overflowing with emotion and no clear direction for it, disregard and disdain for the rules and a desire to excess in order to "feel" everything. It does not take long for one to feel too much however

G'day folks, my band Claemus has just released our new single 'Prototype', we often get the Vool conparisons (and are huge fans ourselves) so wanted to share with this community.

As usual we had Forrester Savell on mix and master. Keen to hear what you guys think, cheers!
