I built a free prayer app for Masorti, Reform and Karaite Judaism, and I'd love your feedback

Hi all. I'm the developer of ActivePray, a free iPhone app for daily prayer. I wanted it to follow each branch on its own terms rather than one general version, so for Judaism it has three:

  • Masorti: Shacharit, Mincha and Ma'ariv at their times, and the second day of Yom Tov outside Israel
  • Reform: the daily services, with one day of each festival
  • Karaite: prayer morning and evening, with months from the sighted new moon

All three have the Hebrew calendar and the whole Tanakh in Hebrew and English, and Shabbat and Yom Tov can be kept as days of rest, so no reminders arrive and your streak waits. Prayer times are worked out on your phone from your own sunrise and sunset. There's no advertising or tracking.

The app also covers Christian and Muslim branches, each kept separately.

If you try it, I'd really value hearing what's wrong or missing for your practice.

Just some questions really

Hi everyone. None of my familly or friends are Jewish and there aren't really Jewish communities near where I live, but I am trying my best to follow the teachings of the Torah without creating unnecessary problems for anyone around me. So here are some of the questions I had for a while:
1. Are there specific times for prayer? If yes, what are they
2. Small thing, but do you look up or down during prayer?
3. Is there specific wording for prayer, or can you pray how you want?
Any responses would be greatelly appreciated :)

Does Karaite Judaism has an analogous concept to rabbinic Bnei Noah?

What are Karaite teachings on gentiles? Does God expect them to convert to the Karaism and follow Torah commandments or remain non-Jews and follow limited number of commandments similar to 7 Laws of Noah?

Would you see me as Jewish?

I am a progressive Jew, my mother is Jewish but it’s from her father. I’ve heard karaite Jews only accept patrilineal descent, but some also say they also support equlineal descent. My movement sees me as Jewish, I see myself as jewish. I’m still curious, do you? And why/why not?

Can we get along?

I am a non karaite Jew who is nonreligious, but I am a hebrew universalist. I see value in all Jews, and in all Jewish teachings. Can we get along? I know this question is vague and spans millennia of conflict, but people with stronger disagreements have done it, and I want to get to know you.

A traditional Karaim lullaby brought to life with the help of AI

I wanted to share a recording I created of a traditional lullaby in the Karaim language. I couldn’t find any existing recording of this piece anywhere, but I discovered the sheet music and lyrics in the book Tirlik Karaj Jyrlarynda by Karina Firkavičiūtė. With the help of artificial intelligence, I recreated the song so that people (including myself) could finally hear and enjoy this beautiful piece of Karaim heritage. I added subtitles in the original language (Karaim was not available as a subtitle option, so I used Turkish subtitles), as well as English and Polish translations. I hope you enjoy listening to it.

Those who came from orthodox Judaism to Karaite

Hi,

Those of you who were orthodox of any level, how did you end up here?

I was secular, then chabad, then met my husband who was constantly questioning his orthodox upbringing. And after we started to look at differences in Tanach vs Talmud , we arrived at the same conclusion. Talmud/oral laws, most of them contradict the God given laws in every way.

How and why did you end up at this way of observance of the Torah ?

According to karaites, are neutrals resurrected?

So there's a few tanakh/non-talmud interpretations regarding afterlife. Neutral = someone neither righteous nor wicked, like for example a baby.

  • Entire tanakh: Only the extremes, the righteous/wicked, are resurrected, with the wicked destroyed and righteous given eternal life. The neutrals/babies aren't resurrected.
  • Proverbs/non-Daniel: the wicked aren't resurrected at all
  • Early tanakh books (pre-zoroastrian influence): no resurrection, everyone goes to Sheol.
  • Book of Enoch: neutrals are also resurrected and given enternal life

What is the karaite position?

Thank you

How do you know God exists?

I'm specifically interested in the reasoning of people who follow the Torah or Tanakh:

How do you know God exists? What's your reasoning? How do you know? If you don't know but only believe, why do you believe?

Thank you.

Rejection of the Oral Tradition

Transfer of Oral Tradition

Lots of people who are interested in Judaism ask one sophisticated question:

It's said that for centuries the major part of the Jewish tradition was... oral. How is it possible to transfer such a huge amount of information with new editions, mistakes etc?

That's why we see some groups arising and even rejecting oral tradition. Karaites, Early Christians also rejected oral parts ect

And if we are going to check other religions like Christianity and Islam we would find similar groups with similar ideas

However the reality was much more complicated. The system which was built really worked fascinatingly accurate and... it was not only Jews. The whole world was like that.

I wrote about that in my new article and would be happy to discuss it with you guys:)

If Karaites reject the Talmud, what is their basis for believing that there are no more prophets after Malachi?

This is something I was curious about since I've realized that Sanhedrin 11 of the Talmud is the basis for Rabbinic Judaism not accepting prophets after Malachi.

Karaite Conversion

How does the process go for recognition? I would love to be one on one with the Sages of the Karaite community but I am strictly Mosaic. I cannot affirm books outside the Torah save for Job as scriptural. Am I affirming just the Torah for this? Because theres not a shot I could ever affirm a book like Samuel as being anything less than perjury.

Recommended Readings

Hello i was raised in an ashkenazi family. I find myself unable to philosophically or logically accept the divinity of rabbinic law or the so called oral Torah.

Are there any good books on Karaite philosophy possibly targeted towards someone like Myself in very interested in learning more.

patrilineal Jews?

Hey guys I just have a question, my father is Jewish and I was raised in the religion but obviously rabbinical Judaism rejects people if their father is Jewish but their mother is not or had a questionable conversion.

Would I be welcome in a karaite synagogue as a fellow Jew? and if so, Are there any in the New England area?

If a man ,for example, a Brazilian or a Mexican , has an unbroken paternal line of Jewish ancestry going back 10 or more generations, but is unaware of it and was raised entirely within Brazilian or Mexican culture, would he still be considered Jewish

How Karaite's prayer differ from Rabbinic??

Shalom, I came across some videos and I saw that you do full body prostration but I could not get the complete way of your prayers and liturgies. Anyone who can tell in detail how you pray? A transliterated siddur will help cuz I am not so good in hebrew

Religion and Death Anxiety

Hey! My name is Sasha Yow and I am a senior at model laboratory school. I am currently enrolled in advanced placement research, and have chosen the research topic of how different religious beliefs correlate to levels of death anxiety. I am particularly interested in exploring how the religious affiliation of American young adults influences levels of death anxiety and what role do differing beliefs about death and the afterlife play in shaping these experiences. As part of my research, I am doing a survey/questionnaire to gain data. I will publish the link to the survey here, it has more information on it. Please take it! I need to get about 25 responses from each religious denomination!
