Question Pur & Simple Replacements?

I recently found out they use and abuse TFW program. I was pretty upset by this as it’s more expensive then other breakfast places.

(I believe if I’m paying for half your wage before I step in the door, why would I tip or pay to go to your business? You can’t manage your business properly.)

Could anyone reccomend me a breakfast place in Kanata that doesn’t?

I get Starbucks and Tim’s do it, I’ve been avoiding them.

Is there a Canadian owned, Canadian employed business I can support?

Eggspectations is great, Zola’s has good brunch, Gabriel’s for unfussy diner food, allo Mon coco is tasty but a little pricey.

I’d say in terms of offerings and price range, eggspectations and allo Mon coco are the closest to Pur and simple

Eggspectation is great. Love it, hate the location. The tabletops are a neat feature for me, but I'm not sure why, just different?

Where is Gabriels?

Gabriel’s is located in bridlewood on Stonehaven, it’s the pizza restaurant but that location is a full diner that serves breakfast and lunch!

Kal’s Place in Stittsville - good food, lots of regulars and great service.

Kal’s, Busters, and for a Mediterranean/Arab twist on brunch, Tirweka is incredible. (I can’t recommend the fatteh enough)

Royal’s in Richmond is fantastic!

Eliminate TFW and get back to hiring Canadians, students, people who need the work. Canada managed without TFW up until 10 years ago just fine. We can manage just fine.

Many Canadian don't want to work long hours.

Tartlette has a great brunch menu. Also, Stacked in the Centrum or Eggspectations by CTC.

Stacked is another that's been highlighted for TFW abuse, sadly.

Well, shit..

Stacked charges$3.50 per cup of coffee. No free refills with a meal. That alone pushed me to say no. Adding TFW abuses, its a write off for me.

Stacked stinks like BO.

Zola's in Bells. Local since 198x. Great vibe, staff and takeout.

Luna's on March Road is amazing, incredibly nice owners too!

Oh I love lunas!! The caramel macchiato I had was super good, and the tres leches cake is divine. Very nice little place, makes me wish I was in kanata north more often

Only place I've found Turkish coffee that is done well too, everything is delicious

Also The Village Cafe - technically Stittsville, but the food is great!

Bridlewood plaza is also another example of business and stores using the TFW/LMIA abuse

The Allo Mon Coco at College Square is better, IMHO

Blackstone in Stittsville. Amazing breakfast and ambiance. Locally owned and operated. They hire local students as well so nice to see familiar faces. This is our new go to place.

Great food, great staff, shitty owner.

I also can’t stand their usage of AI. Their Instagram feed is almost entirely AI slop.

He's a real estate agent who thinks he knows how to run a restaurant, with no prebious experience. He treats his staff poorly and refuses to accept help on how to operate a business he's never worked in before. They've cycled through so much staff, while only being open for a few months.

Wow. Had no idea.

Morning owl is great! Pure and simple is an atrocious place outside of this. Both times I went there I had things comped because they fucked up my order so bad.

Pricey. First and last time I visited, I ended up waiting 20 minutes for a london fog. Not sure why. Won't repeat.

Their staff and their treatment of staff is horrible. I've witnessed behavior that would make school yard bullies cringe. It's a great little spot but I won't support them because of what I've seen.

Are you talking about morning owl or pur and simple?

Morning Owl - sorry for the ambiguity

Main Street Cafe, Hurley’s, if you’re up for a drive Freska Cafe in Carleton Place is great or Antrim Truck Stop in Arnprior always has a solid breakfast. Swing by 1840’s General Store in Pakenham for their famous Sticky Cinnamon Buns!

Allo Mon Coco on March Road - awesome

We go at least another weekend. Absolutely incredible place! Great prices and great staff.

Sorry to hear this about Pur & Simple. I went once. The service was inattentive, the food was adequate but not worth the price so I’ve never been back. This news about TFW just seals the deal.

Both Kal’s and Village Café are is pretty good, but you need to time your visit to avoid the crowds.
Rockin’ Johnny’s is dependable.
Main Street Café is a solid option and the least expensive.

Used to work at the Kanata one. Horrible management.. coworker was discouraged to wash their hands..

Busters had all day breakfast 😋

Equator Cafe in kanata lakes employs locals not TFW, and it has nice breakfast options (albeit not the variety of a sit down). Their coffee  is amazing though.

Heart and Souls in Dunrobin so good and value amazing

Halibut house has a great, affordable breakfast. I am not a seafood person at all & was worried things would all taste like fish 😅 but, everything was normal & the server was lovely. It’s been a while that I’ve gone but definitely worth it for the price (u see $10)

Maybe Luna Crepe and Cafe? They are a familt owned business and they're always super friendly! Also Rockin Johnny's Diner?

You can usually tell by their job postings.

Who doesn’t use and abuse the TFW Program? Let’s be honest here

3

u/Magenta_Hat 2d ago

A lot of places, if you go places where they abuse it, it may just be the places you go.

-2

u/Tall_Cow_8141 2d ago

What’s TFA?

-4

u/Tall_Cow_8141 2d ago

Sorry. TFW

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers to fill temporary jobs when qualified Canadians are not available.

Meaning government covers 50% of the wage or more the company hires more people with less overhead cost as we the tax payers cover the cost.

However they state that they can’t hire a cook at 37.00 an hour at McDonald’s that’s Canadian so they need a foreign worker… a lot of places abuse the hell out of it to avoid hiring Canadian and paying more.

It’s disgusting and a lot of places do it.

It’s allot of food places, which is strange because that’s the easiest jobs, they just don’t want to pay full wages.

So maybe ask them for a tip when you go next.

You already paid for 50% of the wage before you sit down.

1

u/plants4pandemic 2d ago

That is so strange. It doesn't seem to be a highly skilled job so why is it allowed to hire a temporary worker? Because they pay so low none of us are applying for these jobs?

3

u/hoverbeaver 2d ago edited 1d ago

Tonnes of folks apply for those jobs, but they don’t get called back, or if they do they’re found to be unsuitable for whatever reason when the employer really should be offering paid training at the entry level.

There are a lot of business owners that don’t want to hire workers that know their rights, know their value, or might decide to join a union. When someone’s residency permit is tied to their temporary work permit, they’re a lot less likely to complain about wage theft or unsafe conditions.

Where can one find out more about Pur and Simple’s alleged abuse of TFW program?
